Should be held at the council offices, Government departments, rather than the migrant hotels? After all, it's due to the government's lack of processing that the migrants are there?

France is fine, this is nonsense. Marseille is a bit dodgy I guess.

If you're genuinely fleeing persecution, I should imagine Marseille looks like heaven.

There's only one other possibility: they're not fleeing persecution.

They want a better standard of living and feel the UK offers it best out of those European countries. In which case, apply legally.

They don't come from France

France isn't even the first safe country they travel through, it's the last before reaching the UK

And ofcourse they don't have to claim asylum in the first safe country

Facts about refugees and asylum seekers

What's the difference between a refugee and an asylum seeker? Should people claim asylum in the first safe country they reach? We answer some of the most frequently asked questions about refugees.

In the 2021-22 census about 16.2% of the UK population were immigrants. Immigrants aren’t driving anything that’s happening to the economy, even if we’ve (possibly) added another 2-3% since.

If roughly a fifth of the UK's population are immigrants, and they're strong net contributors, why aren't they driving anything happening to the economy? And if they're not, why are we bringing in hundreds of thousands more every year?

Because 20% is much smaller than 80%

Lazy how? People in other countries also did not want the British to turn up there. The point being made is that a direct line can be drawn between colonialism, extractive capitalism and the root causes of migration. If people bothered to understand this, they might think, vote and behave differently.

I think even knowing what I know now about colonialism, extractive capitalism and the root causes of migration I would still have voted the same way I did in 1757 regarding the east India company expansion further into India.

Any ideas on how this would be done?

Thought not.

Following through with the welfare reforms put forward by Starmer this year would have been a start. Before he was forced to back down by his back benchers. And now here we are - nearly 7million on disability benefits; doubled from 20 years ago…

Actually they should. niceties and choice are luxuries you can Ill afford if you're fleeing danger and catastrophe.

Do you think those poor people in concentration camps let the first man they saw fling them over their shoulder to take them out when they were freed ? Or do you think they sat there and decided they'd rather wait for a taxi with a driver that could speak their language ?

THEY'RE FLEEING DANGER - (allegedly) Wake up !!!!!!

Why not? Of course they should seek asylum in the first safe country. Surely that would be a better option than risking their life’s (as well as paying lots of money to people traffickers) in crossing the channel in a boat. Well, you’d think that, right?

Gosh, really? But surely, proportionally, we should see a significant boost as the strong net contributors pour into the country? I mean we're constantly told immigration is good for the economy and that we can't afford not to bring in hundreds of thousands of people every year.

Tbh, the Palestinian marches have been happening every Saturday for months. Do you include them in your concern for taking the police away from their proper duties? Or is it just today’s?

Do you know this f'ing infuriates me when I think of true people in utter danger and fear of their lives (one example is the horrors of concentration camps ) and how they wouldn't have cared less who was coming to get them out and what language they spoke or if they had a wireless in the back of the truck. They were utterly desperate.

Now : these asylum seekers are not legal migrants who've decided they'd like to apply to live in the UK because it suits their needs best (because of course they get a bloody choice and put whatever caveats in it they so desire !)

These are supposed to be FLEEING PERSECUTION. So don't insult me (that poster )and all the rest of us by making out they can get choosey bypassing a whole host of safe countries!!

When will people like that poster get their blinkers off ?

Not to mention all those BLM protests. Bet Jennifer wasn't concerned about the waste of police time at those.

I don't know about where you live, but where I live the council have a system whereby you can report a homeless person and an outreach team will scoop them up and get them into some form of accommodation. There is absolutely no need for anyone to be living on the street here and yet people still do. It is often a choice. The reasons why people make those choices are complex and not easily addressed. It is not fair or accurate to suggest that nobody cares about the homeless.

It is a false dichotomy to suggest we either care for the homeless or for the asylum seekers. They are two separate issues and it is possible to care about both.

You do realise that most people who are homeless have complex mental health conditions and subsequent addictions which often leads to poor behaviour which then leads to them being unable to remain in the accomodation they've been "scooped up into ". So they then end up back on the streets.

It's not as simple as "choosing to be homeless".

These people pose a challenge and are often difficult characters. But, they are our problem. Importing other people's problems isn't going to help. Because whether we choose to admit it or not : many of these people are criminals or undesirables (hence ripping up proof of who they are)

Pinkchilli · 24/08/2025 01:05

No I don’t. As a previous poster has highlighted every British residence is entitled to state benefits and housing. In my city there is access to homeless accommodation & support far beyond what asylum seekers get. I’m sick of the rhetoric of people being put up in 5 star hotels & living in luxury it’s ridiculous!
