To feel deflated about DIY kitchen makeover

We moved into our house almost a year ago. It hadn’t been updated in 40 years, but it’s in a great area, between two outstanding schools, and we managed to get it for £200k less than asking as the seller needed a quick sale. It’s a 4-bed with 2 bathrooms, 2 receptions, a separate kitchen and a utility room. It’s a fantastic investment and I still feel lucky to own it.

The reality is we maxed ourselves out buying it, so there’s no money left for big renovations or an extension. My DH doesn’t like the house — he would have preferred a “done” house — but we couldn’t afford that in this area and didn’t want to move elsewhere. His attitude is that everything should be done by professionals, but we can’t afford that either.

So over the past year I’ve been doing most of the work myself: stripping wallpaper, painting, redecorating etc. Recently I tackled the 40-year-old kitchen. We can’t afford new units, so I added panelling to the cupboard doors and painted them, replaced the cabinet handles, removed the lino as it was damaged, stripped wallpaper, painted the walls and the orange tiles, covered the worst tiles with panelling, and wrapped the worktops in vinyl. It’s not perfect — some of the cupboards don’t hang completely straight and need adjusting — but the difference is huge. Instead of a 40-year-old kitchen, it now looks more like a 10-year-old one.

The problem is DH doesn’t appreciate it. He still says the kitchen looks “old” and can’t see the point of me spending a few hundred pounds making it nicer. He hasn’t lifted a finger to help because he doesn’t do DIY, won’t ask FIL (apparently he will be critical because the panelling on the cabinets isn’t quite right) or his builder friend (friend will likely be “too busy”), so it’s all been left to me. His view is we need a new kitchen/extension, but realistically that’s not happening for at least 5 years. I’d rather make it more liveable now.

What’s making me doubt myself is other people’s reactions. A wealthy friend came round and just said, “so much change!” but not that it looked nice. MIL commented on how hard I’d worked rather than how good it looked. My mum loved it and thought a new tap, sink and dishwasher would make a big difference (and she went straight out and bought all of these for me) but she’s also my mum so not that objective. Now I’m worrying I’ve just “polished a turd” and made the kitchen worse, whereas I genuinely feel it’s a big improvement.

Here are the before and (nearly) after photos. They may take a while to load. Be brutally honest — have I done a decent job for a DIY upgrade, or does it look as bad as DH, friend and MIL seem to think? I’m worried I’m embarrassing myself by being so pleased with my efforts.

YABU - I agree with your DH, friend and MIL
YANBU - It looks nice!

I don't understand why your husband is being so mean about it, it looks like you have done a fantastic job

sillyrubberduck · 22/08/2025 20:09

You did great . I can see a massive difference and looks great !

CeciliaMars · 22/08/2025 20:25

I think it looks great - well done!

Snowinsummer · 22/08/2025 20:35

I was wondering if you had indeed ‘polished a turd’ but it looks so much better. Well done to you!

CoastalCalm · 22/08/2025 20:37

Looks great apart from the floor - it looks old and your eye is automatically drawn to it rather than the cabinets etc

LizzyEm · 22/08/2025 20:43

Fantastic op 👏👏👏

Barney16 · 22/08/2025 20:50

I used to have those kitchen cupboards so I know how old they are 🙂 you have done a really great job. Well done.

tinaabbot · 22/08/2025 21:03

If I did all that by myself I’d never stop talking about it! I’d be bringing strangers in off the street to show them 😆

I’m not gifted at diy and wouldn’t even consider tackling something that big but wish I could. You should be so proud of yourself, you did an amazing job. Really looks great. I hope it makes you smile when you walk in, because it should 😁

Cornflowers35 · 22/08/2025 23:09

Shameless place marking for your tips on an earlier post @Malahala

It looks amazing, you should be rightly very proud of yourself.

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 23/08/2025 10:07

It looks a lot better. I wonder if your husband is negging because he feels steamrolled into buying a house he hates, though?

Your kitchen looks lovely. You’ve done a great job.

Id tell him to pack in his negativity or start looking for a new job to afford the nice things he feels entitled to.

itbemay1 · 23/08/2025 10:08

I think it looks great. Would you consider some green plants? A rug maybe

Doomscroller · 23/08/2025 10:13

We bought a house with what turned out to be a truly crazy crappy kitchen. I'd be really pleased if I could get it looking like yours. You've done a brilliant job.

Sasssquatch · 23/08/2025 10:14

I love the floor. Just goes to show we all like different things.

you’ve done a fabulous job and should be really proud of what you’ve achieved.

SunnyUpNorth · 23/08/2025 10:22

You’ve done a BRILLIANT job, well done! It looks great.

I do quite a lot of DIY and learn things from YouTube or Instagram. I figure I may aswell give it a go.

straightening units is actually very easy, I’m sure you could do it. It’s just about tightening and loosening various screws on the hinges holding the doors onto the cupboard carcass. You could do it with a normal screwdriver. However if you wanted to get a handy man to do it I can imagine it would be expensive, probably only 1-2 hours work. They could also hang a blind for you.

what dimensions are the window? I was renovating a house last year and I ordered a load of blinds off blinds2go however I made a stupid mistake with my measuring (have measured loads of times before and not sure what I was thinking!) so I have a few blinds that are brand new that I didn’t end up using. I can check if any of them would fit?

as for the floor - I don’t personally love the look of quarry tiles but they are a very good, breathable material. There is a brilliant Facebook group called ‘your old house restoration and repair’ if you search their old posts there are loads about the best way to clean tiles. I think a large rug would look great. Dunelm do some really well priced ones.

well done!

Moellen54 · 23/08/2025 10:24

Your DH is an a'. If anything needs an upgrade Id trade him for a newer model. He doesnt appreciate you or your had work to make a home

MrsB74 · 23/08/2025 10:25

Well done you! I bought a made to measure roller blind on line from Dunelm recently for our kitchen and it wasn’t expensive. I wish I had your DIY skills!

Christwosheds · 23/08/2025 10:29

TheFlis · 22/08/2025 11:10

It looks miles better!! You have done a fantastic job.

I agree. Wow. How confidence boosting to have done all that yourself with no help. I want to do some tiling but I am worried I will mess it up, you have transformed the kitchen op. I think your husband is just jealous that he doesn’t have any skills!

CheekyRaven · 23/08/2025 10:29

Ignore your selfish, lazy DH and anyone else who's negative. It really does look lovely. Well done.

catherinewales · 23/08/2025 10:34

Tell them all if they aren’t going to help then they should shut their mouths. You could have spent 50k on it and I bet they’d still find something to moan about. Tell hubby if he’s not going to ask fil to help then don’t criticise the work you’ve done.

catherinewales · 23/08/2025 10:34

Sorry should have added. It looks fab. Well done you.

Saeurcat · 23/08/2025 10:35

It looks great OP, so much cleaner and fresher! Well done! My kitchen looks a bit like yours and you’ve inspired me to have a go at wrapping mine!

I do think the floor detracts from it though, because of the dark colour it’s hard not to focus on that, can you add a rug or get some cheap Lino? (If you can wrap cupboards you can definitely do Lino!)

dogsarethebestalways · 23/08/2025 10:35

I think it looks great OP. What you've done looks really nice and the difference is huge. I mean that completely honestly. If I was just being nice I'd just back out of the thread without posting. :-)

Hatandcoatandhymnbooktoo · 23/08/2025 10:36

From a fellow DIYer this looks great - well done!!!
I had the same tiles on my kitchen floor but not as good condition so we ended up covering them in the end, which seemed a shame.
You could paint the walls a contrasting colour (dark possibly?) to make the cabinets pop more.
Also I found it’s not that hard to change a ceiling light fitting & you don’t always need an electrician. IKEA do some good cheap ones.
