To think if you're that fond/proud of your national flag, you should probably know which way up it goes?

Of all the Union Flags that have appeared, a huge percentage seem to be upside-down.

Now, I agree with the basic sentiment that people should be able to display their national flag if they choose, that flags should be respected. I think it's very sad that the flag has been appropriated by right wing groups/views.

Which ever camp you fall in, if you're going to put it up, put it the right way up. They're really doing the opposite of respecting it other wise!

Why has there been so many posts about flags? What are you all going on about?

The far right instigated a movement to put up flags to 'take the country back' from foreigners.

Areas with minorities have had groups attach union jack and st george flags to the lamposts down the streets. Also paint the cross on mini roundabouts.
If you live in a majority white area I am assuming it's not been done because the groups don't feel the need? Or perhaps they haven't got there yet?
Local FB groups in my area (flags everywhere) with lots of comments like 'take our country back', 'make Britain great again'.

I'm in a very white area and there's a few mini roundabouts near me with red crosses on.
Local police are saying they will have to be restored in case people get confused about road markings, obviously not wanting to acknowledge any racist connotations.

So you think the movement around flags points to the subscribers of it being thick?

Like I say, Brexit. That was meant to be a lesson about what happens when you call the electorate thick.

I suppose you’ll be calling all Reform voters thick too.

Edited

If people do their research and genuinely think a party is the best option for them, their family and wider society, absolutely fine. If they vote based on a dog whistle, and the party in question will actually, in reality, be a really bad choice for them and their family 🙄

Racists are putting up flags on lampposts.

What evidence do you have that they are racists?

Bloke down the pub told them

How does it feel to know that ‘thick’ people decided your future in or out of EU? And that ‘thick’ people will be voting in a reform government next time? You seem to be in a minority, despite being so smart and enlightened.

Nah they were probably born with knowledge and ability to identify racist people just by their flag flying qualities. Proper clever innit. These people.

Nagginthenag · 22/08/2025 21:25

And Brexit happened because people were lied to by the incumbent government, and did not, in any way, understand the implications of their vote, because they believed every lie they were fed, and didn't bother to do any research themselves thick as mince

It was sold to the masses as advisory they did a protest vote to get attention and Cameroon triggered it anyway like a twat

Racists are putting up flags on lampposts.

It's as stupid as it sounds.

If you’re from Wales you’re Welsh, if you’re from Scotland you’re Scottish, if you’re from Ireland you’re Irish. But of course everyone who wants to show they’re from England had to be a racist. Says it all really.

It's actually being touted more as a protest against the council in my area because they didn't do much for VJ day but celebrated Ramadan to excess they are constantly going on about Chinese new year but Christmas only gets a bin collection announcement (allegedly) I'm not paying too much attention but even i had a smirk at the cross being put on the island outside the police station AFTER they told everyone they were watching closely

Somewhat annoying. Can I just ask, what was so good about the UK coming out of the EU, and what it is about Reform that you think will sort the countries' woes?

I'm in a very white area and there's a few mini roundabouts near me with red crosses on.
Local police are saying they will have to be restored in case people get confused about road markings, obviously not wanting to acknowledge any racist connotations.

Areas that have been targeted include : Newcastle, Tynemouth, Redditch, Worcester, York, Bradford, Birmingham, Warwick, parts of London (I'm not sure on which parts). Some of these are areas with relatively (for the UK) high numbers of long-standing ie 3rd even 4th generation settled former immigrant populations eg Bradford, Birmingham, others are areas close to where Reform is popular eg Newcastle, Tynemouth.

York's a weird one, very white city , not close to any Reform stronghold, but this weekend is the biggest in the horse racing calendar there so there will be lots of drunk out of town folk around, traditionally it gets a bit fighty at that point. Warwick again, not sure why that's a target, maybe it's easy to get to from other places.

Places where Reform have traction already, there aren't significant flags as yet. Eg hardly any in Gainsborough, Bolton, Hull, Grimsby, just the odd gammon with his own flagpole, none of the lamppost scaling antics in any of these.

Nothing in the surrounding countryside either, around these urban centres or near the urban Reform areas.

CharlotteByrde · 22/08/2025 22:12

Nigel Farage isn't the answer to anyone's problems.

TempestTost · 22/08/2025 22:15

Well, ought, sure, but in practice, lots of people get stuff like that mixed up.

Maybe no one ever told them, or maybe they are not very spatially aware.

There are something to be said for flags where it is obvious which way is up.

Jamesblonde2 · 22/08/2025 22:18

Easy done OP, no need to make an issue of it. People who don’t know can still be proud of their flag.

Back from where! And great as in when

Lonelycrab · 22/08/2025 22:24

Passed a couple of mini roundabouts that had been vandalised with red paint today.

Funny thing was the roundabouts weren’t even white due to age, more dark grey to black. So they’ve slapped some cheap red paint in a scrawny cross through the middle… which has then obviously been driven over and smeared all down the road, and likely up the side of the poor drivers cars who happened to be driving there after the cheap paint had been slapped down.

Looks like a dogs dinner.

Timeforabitofpeace · 22/08/2025 22:24

😂😂😂😂😂😂 that’s very funny OP. But why are we not surprised?

PurpleAxe · 22/08/2025 22:25

I am rather enjoying you all freaking out about this.

Seems a natural push back to all of the shouting, flag waving about pride, Ukraine, and Palestine.

OP, you sound like a bit of a dickhead with your "but it is upside down, you see". Just say what you mean.

Brexit was pretty much an own goal for them wasn’t it?

‘Don’t call me thick or ill do irreversible damage to the country and reduce all of our living standards.’

Because I don’t see any of the sun lit fucking uplands that they promised us?

Why else would there be a sudden heartwarming coming together of flag flying patriotism? It's not boy scouts putting them up you know.

HauntedBungalow · 22/08/2025 23:16

I am rather enjoying you all freaking out about this.

I'm sure that the people like Farage getting rich off Brexit are relieved that you willingly state this. Especially if you're part of the 99% who are way worse off in every material way now than you were in 2019.

But. Kind of doing their job for them aren't you? How does that make you feel? The freakout you're enjoying is transitory; we'll soon move on to something else and you'll stop risking your lives climbing lampposts with no harness or any other provision made for your bodily safety. The degradation of the pound in your pocket however will continue apace. It will roll down the hill and take your, your family's and all your friends' and neighbours' fortunes with it. Just as it has already.

I know we live in a post truth world where opinions are all equal but I really wouldn't be laughing, in your situation, right now. I would be holding my head in my fucking hands and asking myself what the fuck I thought I was doing.

Nookfoot · 21/08/2025 20:54

That a lot of the Union Flags are being put up by people so patriotic they don't know which way up their beloved flag goes.

"Their beloved flag"? Who are 'they'?. The flag belongs to us all, you included 😄

Flaskfan · 22/08/2025 23:42

I think there's some flag waving going on in Llandudno. But I'm a bit confused, because I thought, traditionally, we wanted the English out. But I think these flags want the non English out. But I also thought that the enemy of my enemy is my friend, so we should welcome the non English and send the English home. But is that home England, or Friesia? How far back are we going?

It's all very confusing.

HauntedBungalow · 22/08/2025 23:46

Indeed.

Personally speaking I'm a Celt so all of these Angle arrivistes can fuck off back to where they came from. IF we're going to get technical.
