  • WHATS Not whatsapp (thanks predictive text!) 😅
My DD, 1 at the time, had the slightest runny nose, a little sneeze and MIL screeched, “You better call the Doctor and demand you get seen this afternoon! You better had, or you’ll have social services at your door for neglect!” That sneeze never transpired into a cold….. But whats the craziest thing your MIL has said? This is NOT a MIL bashing thread, but it perplexes me that woman says the darndest things, but thats just who she is as a person! I do love her, she just confuses me.

When I met my MIL she was the same age as I am now. I wouldn’t use my age to excuse the way I spoke to younger people.

My first MIL was beyond lovely. My current MIL is also lovely in her ways, very generous and adores her son and our daughter. I also have two children from my first H. My current DH treats them as his own and this is a huge issue for MIL. There is a bit of a culture clash and she is quite emotionally immature. This is no doubt as a result of her own experiences so deserves some grace.

Years ago, my DH was cuddled with two older DC watching a movie with MIL, she was on the other sofa. Later she said that she felt so pushed out on the other sofa. He thought she wanted to be more of involved in the family and wanted to feel like an insider with all of us. It later transpired that she was so jealous the he was cuddling DC and felt he should be on the other sofa cuddling and kissing her.

She hates that he loves me and all the DC and wishes his focus was on her and biological DC only. Family first

yikes!

At birth my child was my absolute double, it was commented on by the doctor as she delivered her and then everyone who met her, it was a real copy and paste job. At a few days old my MIL sat on the sofa holding the baby and proceeded to list every obscure relative of hers and assign them to a body part of the baby - Second cousin Mary’s ears, great uncle Barry’s top lip and so on. I didn’t feature…

My MIL insisted that our son was the spitting image of her DH... that would be DH's stepfather.

Yes that’s the major eye opener - getting to the age your MIL (or DM) was when she said the most utterly batshit things to you and no longer being able to wave it away as ‘they’re just old / a different generation’. Hopefully we’ll be a generation of MILs who are delightful - time will tell 😏

Asking people what the craziest thing their mother in law has said is not asking people to bash their mother in law…. Its asking people whats the craziest thing their MIL has said 😂

Of course it is. Lots of people say crazy things. If you didn’t want to bash MILs specifically then the thread would have be titled “the craziest thing someone has said.” But no. Apparently it’s only MILs.

LindorDoubleChoc · 22/01/2026 06:43

Not my mil but my father. Dh and I were living together but pre-kids, we were both well into our 30s. I got home from my 9 to 5 job one day and made a nice home made pasta sauce for our dinner. Dh was working shifts at the time and was on something like a 12 to 8 shift, getting home at 9pm. I cooked my pasta and ate dinner before dh got home. My dad was on the phone to me when dh got home and he heard me saying to him "there's sauce in the pan, you just need to cook some spaghetti" and my dad said "oh I'll get off the phone so you can go and cook him his dinner". WTAF?? But that's just one of countless examples of what a terrible old dinosaur he was.

When I was asked who my children looked like my replay was always, “It depends whose mother you ask”.

Would you like me to heat the plates up and bring them down for Xmas dinner?
(My plates are not volcanically hot enough for her. She was visiting for dinner at our house)

Do we have the same MIL?? Mine is not happy unless the plates are too hot to touch 🤣🤣🤣

Nevermind17 · 22/01/2026 07:12

@LindorDoubleChoc Your DH sounds like my DM. “Isn’t DH due home soon? Don’t you think you should go upstairs and change your top and put some makeup on?” 😂

It never ceases to amaze me that DM and I were born a mere 23 years apart. I’m sure she time-hopped from the 19th century.

In fairness, my nephew is the double of my DB, while also being the double of my SIL. It’s quite bizarre. It’s normal to see the resemblances to your own family, but there will also be resemblances to the other side too.

She used to send DH soft porn videos. I can only really describe them as that. They were the sort where it looks like you’re opening something totally innocent on the thumbnail but when you click on it, people fucking or naked women pop up. He had to have a word after DS (toddler at the time) had clicked on one he thought was a video of a monkey… So that luckily stopped.

She also proudly sent us both a video of herself singing karaoke on holiday, very very drunk, it was Sia’s Titanium and she’d changed the lyrics to “I am Ukrainian” to “get at the Russians in the audience”. Wish I was kidding.

5128gap · 22/01/2026 07:21

What's the craziest thing you've ever seen a boy mum do? I once knew a mum with a son who thought having his hair cut would make him lose his strength. What is WRONG with women who give birth to sons not daughters that makes them all so stupid? I've noticed they're really mean too! Not sure why we have to wait until their sons get married to have a pop at them OP. Let's start early. Boy mums...crazy!!!

Crack on then. Nowt so queer as folk.

Oh how i wish some of posters on here - who think they are never going to age, become irritable or forgetful as they age - get nasty, spiteful DILs who will do their best to drive wedge between them and their sons.
Karma is a great thing

You see the point is, alot of what my MIL said and did were generational differences, forgetfulness, being a bit daft etc etc, all of which were excused , until she got real nasty, like genuinely the character showed, the lies, big fat massive purposeful lies, the inability to say sorry, the never being wrong, the verbal abuse, yeah no, thats not something I will ever forgive.and the very fact that you think that your son marrying a woman means that a massive wedge has been driven between you and your Son is a YOU problem to be quite frank, your inward expectations not being met of how things should be, and therefore vilifying a DIL. Your son is not yours to keep.

I mean if you have a MIL that has bashed you so much in real life that you feel the need to bash her on a forum (because you cant bash her to her face because you are too nice) then by all means bash away… its very VERY healing!

Wow. You base that on one person?

I had two boys, both thoughtful partners, and one a wonderful father. I love both of their partners too.

When we got back from a day trip on a shared holiday she announced “I’ve been in your room so I could sort out your suitcases, I’ve folded up your dirty underwear and put that to one side” we were 30 with a baby. She was lovely and down to earth otherwise! She also once let herself in to our home while we were away and rearranged my whole wardrobe, I had my sex toys and lingerie in there.
