To think you should eat outside in summer

We live abroad and are on holidays this month.
Dh tends to do a bbq most days for lunch.
Each time he wants to eat inside as thinks there’s too many flies outside (there aren’t) or some other excuse. Dd follows him and they end up sat indoors eating lunch watching tv on a lovely summers day.
I end up sat outside eating lunch on my own
We have a nice seating area by the garden and pool with large parasol for shade
We have all autumn/winter where we’ll have to be sat inside eating

Aibu to want to sit and eat lunch outside as a family on our summer holidays?

I wouldn't want to. Wasps!

NotEnoughKnittingTime · 20/08/2025 14:56

Just sit outside by yourself?

There isn’t many….he’s the same in the evening on the beach…beautiful sunset and wants to go at the best part as starts complaining about mosquitoes, just put a roll on then. Seems so fussy and misses out on living the best of life

It's personal choice, there's no should.

5128gap · 20/08/2025 14:58

Not unreasonable to want it. Possibly unreasonable to dwell on it when its something you can neither insist on or persuade. So the best course of action is to think, oh well, that's a shame, and enjoy your solo lunch!
What I would do is tell DH that it's not great for DD to be eating in front of the TV, so if they were eating inside together, could he at least switch it off and make conversation with her.

IMissSparkling · 20/08/2025 14:58

I'm with them, I really don't like eating outside.

I do, but it would be lovely to eat outside and altogether as a family in summer for our lunch

I have a house in Spain. If you barbecue food - and especially meat - outside, you are going to attract flies. 🤷‍♀️

Laserwho · 20/08/2025 15:00

Hes not making excuses, he just doesn't want to eat outside and you aren't listening to him.

Letgoofmyblank · 20/08/2025 15:02

I can’t bear sitting outside to eat. Things flapping about, flies, wasps, sun in someone’s eyes, wanting e.g. the salt and having to traipse in to get it. It’s a total pain. But what the hell are they watching TV for? Surely dinner time is for talking amongst themselves (while you strop outdoors by yourself).

I’m listening but i’m asking others if they think it’s a shame not to when it’s summer and we’ll be inside eating lunch and dinner all autumn & winter

I agree with him. Can't stand eating outside and I can't stand overbearing people either who think it's all about them.

BadActingParsley · 20/08/2025 15:04

I try and eat oustide as much as possible - like you say there's months of telly watching to come soon.

Also love the beach in the evening and watching the sun going down - DH gets bored...

delightfulmusic · 20/08/2025 15:05

I like to eat outside but dh doesn’t, he’s always bothered by seagulls lurking so can’t enjoy his meal. I just have to accept that and eat alone or inside.

So go and sit inside with them.

There's no "should" to this. Why do you think there's a right or wrong about whether someone finds something comfortable/enjoyable or not? You can't dictate other people's opinions.

Sorry im with your husband, i hate eating outside. Bugs and flies annoy me and then one gust of wind and something goes flying off.

betterBeElwinNextIGuess · 20/08/2025 15:08

"it's a shame not to" is just another way of saying you want to, but with an extra helping of "and everyone else should want to too". They don't, tough!

Personally I like the idea of eating outside much more than the reality. You say there aren't many wasps, etc., but it only takes one to ruin the whole experience. It's much easier to be outside when you're not eating, because then you're not attracting insects so much!

It’s not all about me, it would be nice for Dd to eat outside too, where we are everyone does, all the gardens are full of families Bbq-ing, chatting sat around together

YANBU in my opinion.
I LOVE eating outside. If it's warm enough I'm outside. My DH is also not a big fan of eating outside, but will do so if I say we are eating outside.
It's the same if we are eating out in the summer, if the weather is warm enough I want to sit outside. I will look for a place that has available outside seating as that's part of the enjoyment for me when eating out in the summer.
Like you say, there's many many more months eating inside in the UK.

wominzy · 20/08/2025 15:12

We eat outside every opportunity we get, and that's not abroad either! As OP says there's plenty of time 9 months of the year to sit inside in a cave and watch the rain run down the windows.

Maybe you could compromise, and have lunch inside but all go outside for after dinner coffee/drinks/water whatever and enjoy that.

EasternSkies · 20/08/2025 15:13

They don’t share your spirit OP.

Many of us love to be outside as much as possible, it keeps our spirits up and is the summer / holiday / outdoor vibe.

I love eating outside in winter, too, a flask and sandwich on a winter walk.

So I sympathise.

Are you away? When / if at home invite some of your girlfriends to come over for drinks, and sit outside.

I would not be impressed that he is encouraging your Dd to eat in front of the TV when on holiday.

gamerchick · 20/08/2025 15:15

I don't like eating outside. Some people don't.
If it's your bag then just crack on.

Coconutter24 · 20/08/2025 15:15

Yanbu to want to eat outside
YABU to think others should sit outside to eat just because you enjoy it
