To think you should eat outside in summer

We live abroad and are on holidays this month.
Dh tends to do a bbq most days for lunch.
Each time he wants to eat inside as thinks there’s too many flies outside (there aren’t) or some other excuse. Dd follows him and they end up sat indoors eating lunch watching tv on a lovely summers day.
I end up sat outside eating lunch on my own
We have a nice seating area by the garden and pool with large parasol for shade
We have all autumn/winter where we’ll have to be sat inside eating

Aibu to want to sit and eat lunch outside as a family on our summer holidays?

I only eat outside if there’s shade, if it’s hit. I don’t want to burn myself eating my dinner. Equally I don’t eat in front of the tv.

does that not count as family time?

Clearly we are not going to agree on this. Obviously I think eating in front of the tv is not family time and you do.. my reason is when eating you can talk about things, food what going to do for the rest of the day etc. Each to their own on less you want to do this all day😂

Wow I'm amazed by how many people hate eating outside! I'm not surprised that some people don't like it (I do realise not everyone has the same preferences as me) but I assumed the majority would like it, when it's not too cold. In the UK I don't think it's ever too hot to eat outside, provided you have a nice big shade set up. I think this year we've had at least one meal outside in the garden (in southern England) on 90% of days since spring. It's been amazing! Don't really understand why people think it is a hassle. Again, I know it will depend on your house and garden set up, but in our house the outside table is only about 4 steps further than the inside table, and I don't think it is that unusual to have doors from the kitchen out to a patio? Maybe there was something about this thread that attracted the naysayers. Wonder what a representative sample would look like?

To answer these:

  • I’ve had a couple of picnics and can’t say I enjoy sitting in the floor eating outside. Tried one once when my kids were little and they ran away screaming from a wasp or something and never tried again. Plus it’s just easier to eat at home inside where all the knives, plates etc are.
  • Terrace… maybe would be ok. A proper table, if it was well set up. I’d choose to eat inside if possible though, especially when abroad as I’d want the air con,
  • I probably wouldn’t do the strawberry thing. I need to wash my hands before I eat and wouldn’t want to eat food with my hands when out and about and when I couldn’t wash stickiness off afterwards.
  • I don’t think I’ve ever sat on my doorstep, never mind drank a beer at my front door. This one definitely doesn’t appeal to me.
To add more shame to it all, I live in The Lake District.

To be fair, having visited Lancashire in July this year, I don't think I'd be eating outside quite so often there either. It's a complete different climate from the South. It was so green!! Beautiful, but much cooler and wetter.

Not unreasonable to want to. I do too. Unreasonable to think everyone else should want to.

I live in Spain. I eat outside for most of the year and have never seen a wasp and very few flies. Mosquitos in the evening but we have deterrents for that. I love eating outside!

Exactly 💓 I’m surprised so many don’t, I genuinely thought most people enjoyed it, not sure why

I think the eating outside brigade assume people love it, no idea why. I also hate bbq's actually

I dont like hot sunny days as I feel like I should be outside “enjoying” the weather, but in reality I dont like it. I hate the faf of sunscreen, being sweaty, dealing with flies, etc. I would much rather sit inside reading as a way of relaxing. Looking forward to the cooler weather so the pressure is off!

( as I am sure you can guess, I also dont like eating outside)

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 22/08/2025 12:43

We ate outside at a gathering yesterday. There were so many wasps that I really couldn't enjoy my food at all. Didn't bother eating much in the end at all as it was too stressful!

I think it's fine to eat outside if you enjoy it, but not reasonable to say that people "should" eat outside if they don't want to.

I'm a huge fan of eating outside and have eaten most meals outside this summer, but I'm fairly indifferent to bbqs. I'm not convinced that cooking food outside makes more enjoyable, and I'm not as confident cooking on a bbq as cooking inside. In fact, in a traditional manner, I tend to delegate it to DH. It's also a fair bit of faff (unlike just taking food outside) .

It is such a shame that your husband and daughter don't share your enthusiasm for eating al fresco. Even if they dont like eating outdoors it seems a pity they are eating whilst watching t.v. They really should be having a conversation and then join you after they have eaten for a chat outside. We are stuck indoors for so long in the u.k with our never ending autumn and winters they should make the most of outdoor living!

luckylavender · 24/08/2025 12:28

I hate eating outside. I hate squinting, insects. Random breezes.

cc99xo · 24/08/2025 13:33

I prefer eating inside 🤷🏼‍♀️ let your family do what they want.
