To think you should eat outside in summer

We live abroad and are on holidays this month.
Dh tends to do a bbq most days for lunch.
Each time he wants to eat inside as thinks there’s too many flies outside (there aren’t) or some other excuse. Dd follows him and they end up sat indoors eating lunch watching tv on a lovely summers day.
I end up sat outside eating lunch on my own
We have a nice seating area by the garden and pool with large parasol for shade
We have all autumn/winter where we’ll have to be sat inside eating

Aibu to want to sit and eat lunch outside as a family on our summer holidays?

I can guarantee you 'miss out on life' more than me. You come across with pursed-lipped judgement about other people's choices. Which doesn't scream 'fun' to me.

How can you guarantee that 😂

No need to take it so personally/seriously

I live sitting outside to eat. My parents used to live in Spain over winter so tended to eat inside, but once we arrived at Easter I ‘made’ them sit outside and it was lovely. Yes a few glues but we put stuff out for them and the wadis and last time the mossies weren’t bad at all - we used those wrist and ankle bands which seemed to work well. I agree it’s one of the best parts of the holiday! Plus we had no TV so that’s not even an option - scrabble every night!

I would love this! Would have to play on my own or with my Ddog though 😅

I think the Op is confusing her idyllic image of summer living with real life.....

But wouldn’t it be nice if we all ate together?

Then eat indoors if you want to eat together. Your wishes don’t trump everyone else’s.

chocolatemademefat · 21/08/2025 14:54

I hate eating outside. Wasps, bees and flies - and I’m in Scotland so chances are it’ll rain.

katand2kits · 21/08/2025 15:08

YABU. Wasps are outside and really spoil the experience of eating outdoors. I'd rather eat inside and then go and have a drink outdoors.

outerspacepotato · 21/08/2025 15:32

You know what's a life buzzkill?

A controlling person who tries to get people who don't want to eat outside with the bugs and stuff to eat outside using the explanation they're missing out on life.

Nothing livens up a dinner like having to inject an epi pen because someone's been stung by the wasp the food attracted.

Go eat outside of you want. Stop trying to force your family to do it in the name of some live your best life outside bs. 🙄

You might like those guys living up in the woods in Scotland.

jonthebatiste · 21/08/2025 16:58

I wonder whether your DH and DD go inside to eat just to get away from you telling them they're living life wrong. You do come across as really very sanctimonious. Which is not remotely fun.

JJMama · 21/08/2025 17:58

You’re not being unreasonable, but neither are they. Can’t think of anything worse personally; bbqs and picnics are vastly overrated. I’m type O Neg and get bitten by everything and I have allergic reactions to bites so it’s not fun!! See also ‘getting a tan’ - vastly overrated.

Leave them to it and stop moaning!

Mumofyellows · 21/08/2025 18:01

I’m in the UK and been off work for the summer break, I’ve eaten lunch and breakfast in the garden practically every day, it’s been lovely! By dinner time the sun has moved round and it’s a bit chilly but we have had some BBQ’s down on the beach. Looking forward to a week in France next week where we can hopefully eat outside more, I love it! Definitely team eat in the garden!

I'm with them, I really don't like eating outside.

Agree, I hate it. Insects, too hot or too cold, hassle taking stuff in and out. Nah!

Fontofallknowledge23 · 21/08/2025 18:40

I relate to you. We eat outside in the uk as much as possible and in Portugal all the time. Luckily we all enjoy eating outside. I feel like you aren’t being unreasonable at all !! It’s really important to get plenty of sunlight where you can too. It’s a really nice way to enjoy food and family time / company.

Sneezeseverytimeheeatsabounty · 20/08/2025 15:08

It’s not all about me, it would be nice for Dd to eat outside too, where we are everyone does, all the gardens are full of families Bbq-ing, chatting sat around together

If DD thought it would be nice for her to sit outside and eat, I'm sure she would. She chooses to eat inside.

Wildefish · 21/08/2025 20:22

No tv while eating lunch. They’ll soon come outside!

Not actually true...and these figures are for the Uk, not in sunnier climes

Holidays are for family time and I never have the tv on when eating. Just my rule. It’s only half an hour.

well daughter is having family time with her dad....what a pity the OP won't join them......

Tillow4ever · 21/08/2025 21:10

I hate eating outside. I suffer badly with hayfever, even with medication, so I end up with puffy eyes and a steaming nose. I’m terrified of wasps, a genuine phobia. The idea of being trapped in a garden table chair (they’re always hard to move) when wasps inevitably appear is horrible. Then there’s the fact it tends to be me going in and out to fetch things needed, it takes longer to clear up at the end than it does inside, if it’s too hot it’s too uncomfortable.

Yes, but the majority want to eat inside.

Of course it is nice for us to have people comply with what we want. Not for them though.

Yes, I agree with you @godmum. I have had this fast forward random thought about OP's daughter looking back on family holiday memories and thinking about these relaxing times with her dad watching tv with him whilst eating lunch
Not the crime of the century and even more relaxing for both if they knew OP was enjoying her lunch outside rather than being cross.
