To think you should eat outside in summer

Sneezeseverytimeheeatsabounty · 20/08/2025 14:53

We live abroad and are on holidays this month.
Dh tends to do a bbq most days for lunch.
Each time he wants to eat inside as thinks there’s too many flies outside (there aren’t) or some other excuse. Dd follows him and they end up sat indoors eating lunch watching tv on a lovely summers day.
I end up sat outside eating lunch on my own
We have a nice seating area by the garden and pool with large parasol for shade
We have all autumn/winter where we’ll have to be sat inside eating

Aibu to want to sit and eat lunch outside as a family on our summer holidays?

You keep saying ‘it would be nice’, but clearly it wouldn’t be nice for them because that’s not what they’re choosing to do. Nice for you is not automatically nice for someone else. Insects around food are a common, valid reason to not want to eat outside.

If you want to eat together, go with the majority vote. More of you want to eat inside, so if being together is important, inside is where you should be.

ginasevern · 20/08/2025 16:17

Yes, I think it's a shame to always sit indoors when there are many more months of autumn and winter than there is summer. I also think it's a shame that your DH can't compromise and eat lunch with you sometimes. But I think the biggest shame is your DD eating in a dark room watching TV when there's glorious sunshine and a pool outside.

Exactly 💓 this is my thinking

I love nature and having large garden back home, we ate outside only when there were guests ...not sure why

Here is a flat in central city, no balcony. I'll adopt a bench and eat next to a tramp

Listening isn't a strong point, is it? It wouldn't be nice if someone hates having flies buzzing around them, no. Personally I would be outside. But that isn't for everyone, I don't feel the need for others to agree with me, and I cetianly wouldn't be trying out manipulative "wouldn't it be nice..." statements to get people to agree with me when they don't.

Gamerlady · 20/08/2025 16:43

Im with your husband, who wants to eat their food with flies and wasps .

DinoLil · 20/08/2025 16:49

Nope. I'm indoors eating all my meals. I don't want to be interrupted by neighbours or flies or wasps or getting too damn hot to eat. Or my salad wilting and the mayo going all warm and bleurgh.

Give me until the middle of next month when it's darker much earlier and cooler, you'll find me sat in the garden with some crackers and cheese watching the bats whizz about.

Horses for courses!

ZZGirl · 20/08/2025 16:50

I hate eating outside. I never do it. Flies, wasps, heat, sun in my eyes despite sunglasses. Nope nope nope. Everyone has their preferences

If youre insistent on eating together, eat inside.

As PP said, there is no 'should'.

Momstermash94 · 20/08/2025 17:01

I hate eating outside I hate flies and wasps and they make eating dinner stressful rather than enjoyable. I used to hate it as a kid when my parents made us eat outside when the summer is nice. It always sounds like a lovely idea in theory but the whole meal is spent swatting flies or running from wasps. I dont think there is anything wrong with letting them eat indoors and they can join you outside again after when their meal is finished

Everlore · 20/08/2025 17:02

I will not eat or drink outside under any circumstances due to insects. I also absolutely hate hot weather so do my best to avoid sitting outside in the summer for any length of time, I certainly don't think I'm missing out. I'm outside lots in lovely autumn and winter, that's my time!

There isn’t many….he’s the same in the evening on the beach…beautiful sunset and wants to go at the best part as starts complaining about mosquitoes, just put a roll on then. Seems so fussy and misses out on living the best of life

You call it the best part

I call it a nightmare.

Some of us are legitimately much more sensitive to bug bites/sun

Nourishinghandcream · 20/08/2025 17:08

Don't mind sitting outside but eating is a no no, would much rather sit indoors.

The only time I would eat outside is if I am out somewhere (work) having my packed lunch sandwiches.

"it's a shame not to" is just another way of saying you want to, but with an extra helping of "and everyone else should want to too". They don't, tough!

Personally I like the idea of eating outside much more than the reality. You say there aren't many wasps, etc., but it only takes one to ruin the whole experience. It's much easier to be outside when you're not eating, because then you're not attracting insects so much!

The IDEA of doing many things out of doors is usually way better than the reality! Eating outside is one, as is making love in a sandy dune ( the bloody sand gets in all your nooks and crannies) or a mossy glade in a forest (ants everywhere) a walk across a planted field (think Flake advert) and those sharp stalks get everywhere too). There's a reason outdoor activities are not too popular!

But wouldn’t it be nice if we all ate together?

Not for him, no.

Enko · 20/08/2025 17:32

I hate eating outside. I dislike the bugs not just those that bite but ants too
I dont care for eating seated in hard or over soft chairs and often a table that doesnt suit the height of the chairs.

I will happily sit with a drink(that I have a cover on)

I do at times eat out if others prefers it but no I dont think it is "nice"

Compromise is the key here

BreatheAndFocus · 20/08/2025 17:38

Sorry, but I don’t feel relaxed eating outside either. It’s not as comfortable as inside; the table and/or chair is usually wonky or the table is planked so things fall down the gaps or are uneven; the chairs aren’t comfy and/or are the wrong height; there’s always some annoying bloody fly, if not wasp, buzzing in your face, trying to land on your food, or drowning itself in your wine.

Perhaps compromise? See if your DH will sit outside with a drink and nibbles, then go indoors for his main course, or come out for dessert and coffee, or maybe have a simple breakfast or lunch outside. Your DD might be persuaded by not having the TV on when she eats indoors and having a special cushion/glass/treat food outside.

But - YABU not to understand that some people don’t find eating outside as nice as you do.

TheGreatWesternShrew · 20/08/2025 17:38

I get it Op. DH and I love eating outside together.

Wheezygonzalez · 20/08/2025 18:12

The wasps have other ideas. It’s not relaxing batting those stripes feckers away every few seconds.

Rollergirl79 · 20/08/2025 18:21

I really don't enjoy eating outside. Flies, wasps, insects in general. Just makes me feel really yucky.

momager1 · 20/08/2025 18:25

deathly allergic to bees and wasps, swell stupidly with mozzies but not a massive issue. We live in the Caribbean , so still , eat indoors if it is just the two of us, have a massive bug zap light on the wall on patio, so if we have guests and are outside, that is on. Food attracts the stingy fuckers. Happy to sit out in the evening watching tv (relax, no neighbors close enough to hear it) under the ceiling fans on the patio, have a glass of wine, and chat. But put a bit of food on the dining table out there.. yup stingy fuckers.
