To wonder what’s going on with all the big lips

Everywhere I go I see women with massive lips. It looks like so many women are wearing lip fillers.

i totally get that if you’re someone with really thin lips then you may want to plump them up, but I see this look on lots of women from their 20s to 60s.

I actually think the pressure to inject chemicals into your face to adhere to a beauty standard is everyone's business. Most beauty standards are a direct consequence of patriarchy, and this one is harmful and imo akin to things like corsets and foot binding.

It's not about blaming women for how they want to present, or judging women. It's about considering the wider impact, and thinking about it through a feminist lens. Surely people don't want their daughters growing up feeling they need to inject crap into their lips to look good? Don't we want women to feel comfortable with their normal appearance, as men do, without the pressure to completely change their face? Normalising normal faces is good for everybody.

Men (unless you're a celebrity perhaps) don't do half as much of this crap. It's a feminist issue.

I have not seen any 'pressure' where they show trout lips looks good, so where does the pressure come from?

people keep on blaming 'society' when they cant think for themselves but never tell us where advertisement, influences, models etc. just doing something connects the general public to feel they have to do it too

People use ''well I feel pressure to make ridiculous choices to my body because I follow people who do it and can't stop reading fashion magazines or have friends who do or watch endless tv with people who look like manequins on them, I can't think for myself' but really?

But why does it bother you what they look like? I can guarantee you no beautiful groomed woman is looking at you and writing in forms how plain and boring you look.. it’s always the lesser attractive ones that have something to say. Sad really

This might be one of the most misogynistic comments on the thread.

pilates · 21/08/2025 05:55

Agree, not a new thing.

It’s not a good look especially when they are so plumped up they can’t close their lips. It makes them look gormless.

MapWall · 21/08/2025 05:56

CoffeeCantata · 20/08/2025 21:35

But it’s OK for you to be sarcastic in your first post (yawn etc) and to misunderstand the focus of the discussion?

I don’t know if you’ve rtft or followed the discussion? It’s clear that nobody is disparaging black women’s lips - we’re specifically discussing the artificially pumped and filled lips fashionable as part of a certain look. Nothing to do with black women, who I think, now you mention it, don’t indulge in this trend.

You got the wrong poster. It was a different poster saying ‘yawn’ etc.

MapWall · 21/08/2025 06:00

I have 19 and 22y daughters. Busy with university and new jobs. They don’t have any fillers or procedures and neither do any of their friends. Not one. They like dressing up and putting makeup on for nights out and that’s it. They also do not like the look of the fillers at all.

I think if kids are busy and have other big aspirations, they may not see cosmetic procedures as a priority. And also it’s peer pressure. None of their friends are doing this stuff so they are not tempted to either.

And all the young people I see going in and out of my house look absolutely gorgeous with no need for these fillers.

It’s more subtle though. If everybody around you has these lips, and all the people you follow on social media do, even if they’re not pushing them, you may think it is the look to go for. It will change your idea of beauty I guess and make you want to achieve that look.

It has always been thus with beauty standards. Of course not everyone is affected. I am in my 50s and I’m happy ageing as I am, and my young adult daughters for now want to stay clear of ‘work’ . But it is because of none of us are surrounded by people who have this work done. If we were, maybe we would also be tempted.

Well if grown adults are following this dreadful trend, I am not sure there is much hope for the many younger people surrounded by this stuff.

have encourage friends what have higher intelligence The irony of this poorly-written phrase has amused me though!

I was on holiday in Turkey. One day in the pool there was a woman with MASSIVE lips and an unnatural looking bum. She looked like Jessica Rabbit. I couldn’t stop staring. I think she’d originally have been very attractive. But she looked bloody wierd.

Wow! You win the misogyny prize on this thread.

I’m guessing you have ‘the look’ being discussed here?

For ‘plain and boring’, I’ll read ‘natural and understated’.

It’s totally a feminist issue. The pps saying “It’s none of your business’ just don’t get it. Either that, or they take pride in sacrificing their beauty and individuality to keep their gruesome men happy.

Sometimes I think lip fillers end up making your lips look like hemorrhoids. You have to be careful.

Simplestars · 21/08/2025 06:57

NOresponsibility · 19/08/2025 10:50

Its just a trend that is fading out.
The big brow.
The huge spider lashes.
Reduclious long fake nails.
A puffy face full of filler.
The older mum hype.
The skinny jab.
Awful fake tan.

Its down to others what they want but i think in due time some will see the effects it has. Sorry to say it but some have made their selfs look older.

What is older mum hype?

Skodacool · 21/08/2025 07:01

I think the same about heavy tattoos and facial piercings.

I'm inclined to agree with you. The way @Feelinglost10 keeps defending the look makes you think so, doesn't it. I also think she is completely missing the point.

Rather than defending “the look” I’m actually defending a woman’s right to look however she likes without other insecure women putting them down. If this was a post on fat people and how disgusting and lazy that “look” was there would be outcry. For me, a woman can do whatever she likes with her own body and face and if that’s what makes HER feel beautiful why does anyone else feel they have the right to judge?! It’s pretty embarrassing

And why do you care what “look” I have or any other woman for that matter? I’m not asking to date you, I’m not asking to put filler in your face, I don’t even know you exist on the planet or that you breathed air. This is the problem with half the people on this forum, too much time on their hands and too many opinions

RavenhairedRachel · 21/08/2025 08:29

If they saw what they looked like from the side absolutely hideous stuck out like a duck billed platypus. If they're going out of fashion that's good news hopefully the camel eyelashes and thick eyebrows will go out too. Whatever happened to natural beauty.

Actually you can’t guarantee that, I know several women/girls who do spend a proportionate amount of time on a night out, slagging off people who don’t appear to have had any work down on their face, and yes they are plain and boring and what’s wrong with them omg look at what they’re wearing is all that comes out of their mouth. Mind I do live in an affluent area where they all look identical barbie..you choke on aftershave and perfume and it’s so bloody shallow it’s unreal. And sadly they are shallow in their heads to.

You seriously think that women who dislike the look of overly inflated lips so their top lip curls over, teamed with eyelashes that look like overweight spiders are insecure? I saw someone looking like that yesterday and thought thank goodness I don't look like that.

And you think people here have too much time on their hands and too many opinions? News: it's a discussion board.
