To ask those who are not white brittish how they feel about the flags?

Birmingham and Tower Hamlets are having St George England flags put up by privately funded groups.
I'm horrified by the implicit racism. I've seen a lot of white people applauding this and "time we took back the country" comments.
I haven't seen many non white people commenting. My feel is that they are too intimidated to do so. Am I right? Or is it indifference or is it that you're dealing with racism on a daily level and this is just one more thing.
Please don't post if you're white.whatever you feel about the flags. I want to hear on white viewd

So your answer is, in an estate full of England flags, if I were to fly a German flag, I’d be completely fine with absolutely no repercussions at all. Hmm. I don’t think any of you have actually thought this through.

Ok. I’ll tell you what. How about you repeat that experiment and let me know how you get on in an average town in the U.K. right now that is….

I bet you haven’t the bottle.

That’s not what you said originally.

Abgegrenzter idiot. Auf Deutsch.

Far left groups harass pretty much every event organised by gender critical women. A 70 year old was punched in the face by a young man.

Palestine action caused £7m of damage to that aircraft.

Pro Palestine protesters have harassed
jews and ripped down hostage posters.

The far left claim to promote inclusion and equality, but if you have the wrong views they can turn ugly pretty quickly.

Did she really ask for an example of where the hard left caused harm? 😆 🤣 😂

Do the far right wear balaclavas when they go on protests

you are an absolute joker, son

I think it's wonderful . I don't really understand the narrative that we should be embarrassed or ashamed of our national flag when other people are more than proud to display their own national flags at various sporting events etc. There does seem a political drive to make us all feel ashamed of the British flag and convince us that it's racist to be patriotic and proud of our own national flag.

Well if people are using it in a 'take back the country' way then yes, it is potentially racist!

I hate the England flag, it makes me cringe, exactly because of the context I've seen it used in.

Embarrassing.

The fascists, who reckon they oppose fascism - hilarious- beat women up for wanting single sex spaces. Now, I thought you were having a go at supporting wankers, who hate women. Do the far right wear balaclavas when they go on protests? Far right, my eye. Anything you don't agree with, is far right. As for the German flag effort @lonelycrab - you're really showing your own bigotry there. Fancy using a nation, just to get at the English. We've moved on from the war - didn't you know?

Correct - facists have always demonstrated violence against women, and oppressed them into menial roles. So we agree. Women's rights, certainly wouldn't exist without the efforts of progressives and the left, we wouldn't enjoy any of the equality we do today if it were down to the right.

The far right have always incited way more violence - through terrorism, intimidation and oppression - than the left. But I see this is a pointless discussion since you are determined to insist that the woes of the UK are down to the left. Goodnight.

Yes, the hard left and their threat to national security - which is why they find themselves on a proscribed terrorist list. Pointless, indeed. 👍

I’m Welsh. I find the St George flags very cringey even if they are not overtly racist that’s so nuanced. I find default patriotism so very weird. I’m not patriotic and I find the British identity a bit embarrassing sometimes. Other times I just don’t think about it.
We all know exactly what the flags are about. It’s the same people busily blaming b everything on immigrants surely. If you think these things aren’t connected that’s
baffled me.

saraclara · 18/08/2025 23:04

Vaxtable · 18/08/2025 14:08

Ho get away with you. It’s the English flag go to Wales or Scotland and they are all flying their respective flags

why should flags of other country’s be acceptable to be kept flying, but not the English flag?

Because those countries haven't had their flag taken over by far right racists?

The St George's flag was rarely flown outside football matches for the majority of my 70 years on this earth. Only the Union Jack was down.
When the St George's flag suddenly started appearing again, it was because racist bigots had resurrected it.

That is not the case in most other countries.

Dangermoo · 18/08/2025 23:06

For every one of those images, I will give you a balaclava wearing thug, who breaks into military bases and incapacitates aircraft. The type of worthless vermin, who would be too scared to pick up a weapon and defend his country. Why should he do that, when he can serve his purpose as the enemy.

godlikeAI · 18/08/2025 23:07

my family is non white and I do give a fuck about the message the flag sends. It is used to signal “you’re not welcome” and is flown by people who are, often, unwelcoming. I don’t enjoy walking down streets and past houses, in my very multi cultural area, where these flags are up. There is nothing cheery about them, as they are currently used - ie draped around the shoulders of people who hate foreigners or hanging outside houses to make a point

Also worth noting that you pretty much never see them hanging from an expensive house - I have yet to walk around, say, the nice parts of Kew or Blackheath and see a flag hanging from a £3m Victorian town house. As well as giving racist vibes, they also look pretty bad

You wouldn't be exhibiting xenophobia, now would you? Shall we try the same with the Welsh culture? No, let's not. We aren't all hypocrites.

Great that the country has multicultural areas, isn't it?

R0ckandHardPlace · 18/08/2025 23:14

There’s a house near us that’s flown a St George cross for years. We call the house the “white supremacists”.

But that’s your insecurities. And your insecurities shouldn’t dictate that people who live in England aren’t able to celebrate being English by displaying our flag which has been around for centuries. And yes, you do see them on big houses in nice areas. I’ve been to the Peak District this weekend, and there are lots of flags on large homes and pubs. Maybe it’s just something which doesn’t happen generally in London because the people who live there have been conditioned to not be patriotic, plus a lot of London is now very multicultural, so that many don’t care enough to be bothered.

Goldenbear · 18/08/2025 23:16

BruFord · 18/08/2025 22:36

@Lonelycrab Your neighbors would assume that you’re German?

My Irish neighbors fly the Irish flag, the Canadian ones fly the maple leaf.

But that's never been a thing here in the UK. Some people from the U.S. have always declared their heritage even if their connection to that country is very distant indeed. I have family in Denmark and Danish heritage but I am British and won't be erecting a flag pole in my front garden with the Danish flag hanging from it! That would be very strange indeed, in the SE part of England I live in! That said, someone down the road does have a flag pole with a large football flag hanging from it, perhaps he was born in the stadium, who knows!

Also, having a Danish family, I can categorically state they don't own a flag and it is not exclusionary patriotism, it is about a united identity when flags do appear.

it’s exactly this^

very sad that in this day and age that’s what it comes to but sadly it has.

@Dangermoo no you can’t really though can you. A few people wearing balaclavas might have gone and trashed some of our jets (completely don’t agree with that btw) but I can literally post hundreds and hundreds of masked up thugs attacking our police over the last year or two.

Nestingbirds · 18/08/2025 23:18

Well over 80% think rightly you are being unreasonable op. It’s a flag. Get over yourself for goodness sake.

5MinuteArgument · 18/08/2025 23:20

Flag wars have been created by the likes of Birmingham and Tower Hamlets councils.

They've allowed Palestinian flags to be up for months. But when people put up English or British flags, suddenly they're a hazard to pedestrians and motorists and need to be removed immediately. The inconsistency is pissing people off.
