To ask those who are not white brittish how they feel about the flags?

PicaK · 18/08/2025 13:32

Birmingham and Tower Hamlets are having St George England flags put up by privately funded groups.
I'm horrified by the implicit racism. I've seen a lot of white people applauding this and "time we took back the country" comments.
I haven't seen many non white people commenting. My feel is that they are too intimidated to do so. Am I right? Or is it indifference or is it that you're dealing with racism on a daily level and this is just one more thing.
Please don't post if you're white.whatever you feel about the flags. I want to hear on white viewd

LOL at 85% of (nearly 900 so far) people saying YABU @PicaK 😆 Is this why you didn't come back to the thread since lunchtime? The thread didn't go the way you planned eh?

As I said, (and many others have too,) the England flag is the ONLY flag anyone has a problem with people flying. It's hilarious and batshit that ANYone throws shade on someone flying their OWN flag in their OWN country! (And it's only English/mostly white people who do the complaining. The social justice warriors!) These same people have no problem with ANY OTHER FLAG.

Fortunately this type of batshit attitude is dying off, and the type of people who display it are thankfully few and far between now. As this thread clearly illustrates!😬

I'm out. Off to bed!

The intent behind the flags is what’s important.

This current wave of populism / nationalism is driving flags to be tied up haphazardly on bridges and lamp posts to mark territory / antagonise & “other” foreigners.

That’s not patriotism. Patriotism is never defined by putting down people of different origins or ethnicities.

JHound · 18/08/2025 22:26

The flags in and of themselves would not bother me (I had a Union Jack purse for years till it fell apart) but some of the comments you mention certainly would.

The “we aRe TAkinG oUr coUntRY bACk” crowd are so exhausting.

You'd better tell the wavers of the Palestinian flag that. I believe many Jewish are intimidated - I believe that's the plan.

You said it far more eloquently than I did!

@BatchCookBabe Yes, you're right - I shouldn't have allowed the word 'gammon'. However, I think we've seen enough of red-faced, sweary, racist, sexist right wing men inciting violence for that to be a recognisably unpleasant group of people. Who unfortunately are negatively codifying the ST George's cross.

What I can't understand is why you seem to be defending this group on a women's platform.

BruFord · 18/08/2025 22:30

@Sskka It depends, here (America) we’ve got ‘em everywhere! As I said upthread, some of my neighbors have a couple of different flags up celebrating their cultural heritage.

I've seen plenty of sexist hard left 'men'. They are called Antifa - you know, the ones who like to harrass women for having different opinions.

Yes quite.

Now a question for all those completely unconcerned by the rise of England flags everywhere…

How do you think I’d fare if I flew a German flag in my garden?

Genuine question

@Lonelycrab Your neighbors would assume that you’re German?

My Irish neighbors fly the Irish flag, the Canadian ones fly the maple leaf.

I think the St George’s flag does make you more weary as a person of colour due to its association with the far right, i’d just be more alert but the British flag doesn’t bother me at all. It’s sad because it shouldn’t be this way and should be flown freely as a symbol of pride for our country. I’m not sure what can be done to change this.

Go for it! Why would I object? My Welsh flag would be flying next door and you wouldn’t object to that would you? But you might get a bit annoyed because ich habe ein abitur auf Deutsch and I might ask for help me get a bit more up to speed! The German flag is not a Nazi flag and never has been. There’s nothing remotely wrong with being Deutsch.

@Dangermoo Yeah, it’s weird, isn’t it?! 😂

I’ve seen the Italian and Jamaican flags in our area too, I find it interesting tbh.

Well said. I think the introduction of the German flag was a gotcha attempt. As the UK houses all the 'far right' I'd like to know who is going to be opposing Macron, for instance. I guess the French flag doesn't hold the same threat as the St George. Kudos to the absent OP, who threw in the obligatory "taking our country back". 👏 goad and run.

I think there's a much greater threat from the far right than Antifa. Far right groups have targeted mosques, incited riots and looting and been responsible for many acts of terrorism, including killing MPs (Jo West). Please give one example where Antifa/far left groups have caused harm.

The thing is, you can't. The left actively promotes inclusion and equality. They aren't the ones inciting division and unrest - the far right are. Reform and their ilk try to do the same - and this includes appropriating British symbols and instilling a sense of injustice among people.

Lonelycrab · 18/08/2025 22:44

So your answer is, in an estate full of England flags, if I were to fly a German flag, I’d be completely fine with absolutely no repercussions at all. Hmm. I don’t think any of you have actually thought this through.

Ok. I’ll tell you what. How about you repeat that experiment and let me know how you get on in an average town in the U.K. right now that is….

I bet you haven’t the bottle.

Me too- loved the Jamaicans, who came here and integrated after WW2. Positive, hard workers, with a great sense of humour. Their flag's welcome any day of the week.

Far left groups harass pretty much every event organised by gender critical women. A 70 year old was punched in the face by a young man.

Palestine action caused £7m of damage to that aircraft.

Pro Palestine protesters have harassed
jews and ripped down hostage posters.

The far left claim to promote inclusion and equality, but if you have the wrong views they can turn ugly pretty quickly.

The fascists, who reckon they oppose fascism - hilarious- beat women up for wanting single sex spaces. Now, I thought you were having a go at supporting wankers, who hate women. Do the far right wear balaclavas when they go on protests? Far right, my eye. Anything you don't agree with, is far right. As for the German flag effort @lonelycrab - you're really showing your own bigotry there. Fancy using a nation, just to get at the English. We've moved on from the war - didn't you know?
