To ask those who are not white brittish how they feel about the flags?

PicaK · 18/08/2025 13:32

Birmingham and Tower Hamlets are having St George England flags put up by privately funded groups.
I'm horrified by the implicit racism. I've seen a lot of white people applauding this and "time we took back the country" comments.
I haven't seen many non white people commenting. My feel is that they are too intimidated to do so. Am I right? Or is it indifference or is it that you're dealing with racism on a daily level and this is just one more thing.
Please don't post if you're white.whatever you feel about the flags. I want to hear on white viewd

The racist term, gammon and she's bragging about it. Nice.

I thought gammon was ham!

I'm not going to look up any alternative meaning.

Exactly. I would be embarrassed and ashamed if any of my children had said such a thing. Imagine being proud of it, and bragging about it? How embarrassing. 😬

None of mine would ever have said anything like this though. They have class and intellect.

2021x · 18/08/2025 22:10

The quickest route to radicalising someone is to make them ashamed of who they are.

St George’s flag, may means different things to different people, but it is the flag of England and being English is nothing to be ashamed of.

If the flag means something different to you, that’s because it has been co-opted by hate groups to make you feel ashamed. That is wrong, English is a nationality not an ethnicity.

Livelovebehappy · 18/08/2025 19:45

The irony. There were many protest marches at the very beginning of this happening in Oct 2023, prior to the current situation in Gaza. Whereby protestors were intimidating Jews on the streets of London, with anti Semitic attacks regularly taking place. The displaying of the Palestinian flag in a threatening way goes way back.

Yeah, I remember long before the October 7th massacre, a group of far-right, pro-Palestine supporters drove around Jewish areas in London waving Palestine flags and shouting "Fuck the Jews, rape their daughters". They weren't even prosecuted.

Yes of COURSE you did! 😂 Of COURSE you thought your son saying 'gammon' was calling people 'ham.' Come on mate. 😆 You know exactly what it means, and so does your son. Stop backpedalling. Grin

Nope, I've never heard it used for anything but ham. I'm old tho.

Edited to add: Wrong poster! Not my son!

And what was the original point in being rude, since you have now decided being rude is pointless?

I hadn't realised the extent of your "cluelessness" and thought a bit of exasperation might prod you into at least a google search. But for you to double down and accuse me of lying has indicated that you are a malicious actor, not a merely stupid one.

You don't need concern yourself - it's a racial slur aimed at white folk. Nothing to see, therefore. I find it particularly vulgar, when it's a fellow white person saying it. Self hate- not a very appealing look.

Chocolatefreak · 18/08/2025 22:12

Dangermoo · 18/08/2025 22:09

Did you tell your son he was using a racial slur? Let me guess - you don't think gammon is racist. Credibility well out the window.

Just FYI - racism has connotations of power. But I imagine that nuance is too complex for you to understand.

I've missed the OP - she disappeared.

Yep, asked the question and then buggered off because users of the site wouldn’t accept partition as a decent reason not to respond. I’ve been fairly light around the edges as it’s not my fight…but I do think it’s a bit mad to ask a provocative question and then determine who can/cannot answer. In its own way, the original question sought to silence voices.

So far you've called me:

Ignorant x 3
Clueless
Racist
Stupid
Malicious

Anything else you'd like to add while you're at it? You seem to be on a bit of a roll.

Flopsy145 · 18/08/2025 22:13

We are the only country in the world to take down our own flags. When did a flag become a symbol of racism? Absolutely ridiculous. People who move here from other countries have to respect the culture they are moving to, if I was moving to Spain or Russia I would adapt to their way of life, so really I couldn't give a shit about anyone non British with a negative view on us putting up our own flag. Patriotism should be admired.

It might have connotations of power but that's not its only connotation. Quite a few xenophobes and bigots on this thread. Fancy that.

Gammons = white middle-aged wealthy men who talk about 'taking back' the country. FYI - racism has connotations of power. So - it's not racist of me as a fellow white Brit to call out my own people on their bad behaviour, but it is racist for a white middle-aged wealthy man to talk about 'taking back the country' from people in a position of vulnerability, ie PoC.

There - explained racism for you. It's a complicated concept, I know. 🙄

Dangermoo · 18/08/2025 22:18

I'm more intrigued as to why a 17 year old would even use the term skinhead. Me thinks there's some projecting going on.

Apologies, because you answered for another poster, I was thinking it was you whose son it was. The comments still stand though. How embarrassing to be so proud of your son calling people gammon.

Quite, slurs none the less. Whomever they are aimed at. God why aren’t people better?

Wrong - again. If you use a person's skin colour, in a derogatory way, it's racist. You denigrating your own skin colour - crack on but don't come the bollocks that it's not racist just because you're saying it. Wealthy men? Make your mind up - I thought they were skinheads. Are you mixing up your stereotypes?

It's good that he has enough critical thinking skills to recognise racism and can call it out. unlike some on this thread, who aren't that smart.

I don't see anything smart about not knowing the different variations of racism. Not all of us are brainwashed to believe the power structure automatically renders white people the oppressors.
