To ask those who are not white brittish how they feel about the flags?

Birmingham and Tower Hamlets are having St George England flags put up by privately funded groups.
I'm horrified by the implicit racism. I've seen a lot of white people applauding this and "time we took back the country" comments.
I haven't seen many non white people commenting. My feel is that they are too intimidated to do so. Am I right? Or is it indifference or is it that you're dealing with racism on a daily level and this is just one more thing.
Please don't post if you're white.whatever you feel about the flags. I want to hear on white viewd

Totally agree. I'm a Glaswegian who has lived in the South of England a long time and they were obsessed with "flegs" up there as well. And it's all different flag obsessions down here now. Sick of flags. Just causes division.

Isn’t it the other way round? When you’ve got division, out come the flags.

News flash, we never stopped using it.

So, if you had a saree with swastikas on, would you feel confident wearing it in the UK ?

My mum had one, which she put in recycling. It’s a shame as it was beautiful and I wanted it !

We are Hindus, so I am not sure who the “we” is in your post.

“Are you a student of ancient religions?”These are living, thriving religions practiced by billions of people, including millions in the UK today. A culturally appropriated sign used by one side in a largely euro centric battle of colonialists, for a mere 15ish years in the entirety of human history, should not force these billions of people to relinquish their ancient symbol used for millennia. The “use outside the context” was by the Nazis. Hindus and Buddhists use THEIR sign fully within context and never stopped doing so.

It is surprising that in a thread about symbols and and racism, you and I have to spend so much time explaining such basic facts to the virtue signallers right? The swastika is an important a symbol as the cross to a solid portion of the world's population and yet, these same people think what we are saying is some esoteric and extinct practice.

You should let MN know that their poll is being manipulated by nefarious rightwing forces. The country's feeling about their national flags - the ST G as well as the Union Jack- is not measured by the number of Reform MPs. How odd to even suggest that.

You are naive if you think that polls cannot in any circumstance be manipulated, here or anywhere else. It’s not my job to inform anyone; it’s just a fact of (modern) life and I think most people are savvy to this now.

Look at the discussion on this thread. Does the poll result reflect the actual posts by real users? No it doesn’t. That is my point.

I certainly wouldn't wear a swastika to certain places in Europe but I would never disavow it. I am atheist but I dearly love asian art and my home has many artifacts with swastikas on them.

Augarden · 18/08/2025 21:49

It's not racist to fly the flag of your own country. Non-white British people are British too.
Would any other country in the world be this stupid about their own flag?

Horsie · 18/08/2025 21:37

i had no idea that Hinduism was still practised. I thought it was exctinct. Thanks!

I am properly flabbergasted but do not worry, I have given up on being rude. It is pointless, I realise it now.

Chocolatefreak · 18/08/2025 21:52

Supersimkin7 · 18/08/2025 21:25

@Chocolatefreak your figures show most boat migrants aren’t refugees.

1 in 3 asylum claim success rate. Yikes! Really? Typo?

I work with them a bit and these days most are fit young men from safe countries.

The people we see who are in need of safety - and there are, believe me - are more likely to be families or couples of all sexes. They’re not boat boys.

A big myth is that the young men
send money back to the village or family - unlikely, cos you can’t work for years until
you’ve got right to remain.

The other huge lie is that they’re black - rubbish. Completely multiracial turnout.

@Supersimkin7 these are gov.uki stats - f you had opened the link I added you would have seen that:

The top five nationalities end March 2025 accounted for nearly 60% of small-boat arrivals:

  • Afghanistan
  • Syria
  • Eritrea
  • Iran
  • Sudan
So, most are legitimate asylum claimants. Are you sure you 'work with them a bit' ?

I cannot think of a single one so affected by such silliness.

No, only in the UK

Hallebere · 18/08/2025 22:03

I believe the flags in Weoley castle are in response to Palestinian flags that were put up on the Bristol Road by Birmingham University. Weoley castle is close in distance to the university as it borders Selly Oak. Some people in Weoley Castle took it upon themselves to set up a group and started this flag campaign. They've got a go fund me and the community support..The council is saying it's gonna take the flags down as it's a health and safety issue under the guise of needing to change the street lights to LED. People are fuming the council can't collect the bins but are spending money on taking the flags down. Anything with BCC these days goes back to the bin issue with the locals.

The English flag is already hugely tainted. The stigma is strong, so the battle is already lost.

It's far from lost.

I just asked my 17-year old son what he thought when he saw the St George's cross and he said 'skinheads and gammons'. Says it all, sadly.

Hmmm, I wonder where he could have got this silly, bigoted attitude from at such a young age? 🙄

Did the OP ask for a specific response? I must have missed that, because I also haven't seen them disagree with anyone who doesn't think the flag is racist.

I've missed the OP - she disappeared.

Agreed. And don't fly the flag of your country either. It offends me.

Unbelievable! The uproar there would be if this was the other way around.

Must be a wind up surely 🤣

Did you tell your son he was using a racial slur? Let me guess - you don't think gammon is racist. Credibility well out the window.

Perhaps from those bigots who besmirch the flag in this way?
