To ask those who are not white brittish how they feel about the flags?

PicaK · 18/08/2025 13:32

Birmingham and Tower Hamlets are having St George England flags put up by privately funded groups.
I'm horrified by the implicit racism. I've seen a lot of white people applauding this and "time we took back the country" comments.
I haven't seen many non white people commenting. My feel is that they are too intimidated to do so. Am I right? Or is it indifference or is it that you're dealing with racism on a daily level and this is just one more thing.
Please don't post if you're white.whatever you feel about the flags. I want to hear on white viewd

I am not a natural flag flyer. I was bemused when I went to the US and saw so many homes and churches flying it. I still dont fly flags but I really do not judge the people who do and think it can be a great unifier and rally people around a cause. If you are foolish enough to hand this powerful symbol to the racists, so be it. You are going to lose this battle.

It's really hard to believe that anyone in the world today seriously uses the swastika in anything but a neo-Nazi context

Typing a sentence like this betrays a huge ignorance of how billions still use the swastika and eurocentrism is a kind word. Others may call it racism.

I did say that I don't know how people who use Sanskrit use the symbol and that I may be being too Eurocentric. But don't let the clear black-and-white writing on the page stop you from flinging a good insult!

Are you a student of ancient religions, miraxx? I mean that genuinely. You just seem to know a lot about it. As you correctly pointed out, I'm ignorant in this area. I had NO idea that billions of people happily use the swastika outside of a Nazi context.

The flag is a joy as far as I'm concerned

Looks joyful doesn’t it😊

There won't be any country in the world that doesn't have a flag used in the context of a riot.

The English flag is already hugely tainted. The stigma is strong, so the battle is already lost.

Yes.

But flags are being draped around everywhere it would seem. And we had riots last summer. So I’m uneasy about the connotations of these flags wrt to the apparent simmering tensions in this country and worry about the wider meaning at this particular moment in time

@HolidayInCambodia25 any chance of an answer?

You live in a tiny bubble if you dont know how ubiquitous the swastika is in Asian art and religions and in other cultures, including european ones (Hitler did not pluck it from India!). I am not an ancient religion 'expert' ffs. I simply observe what's in my cultural heritage. People start letters with a swastika, they begin their day by drawing one on their threshold, their prayer rooms will be festooned with a huge variety of it. That's just the 1 billion hindus for starters. You cannot enter a Thai, Korean, Chinese or Japanese buddhist temple without encountering a bunch of swastikas. In japan, a map symbol for a temple is a swastika. Yes, some tourists get triggered but tough luck.
If you were a reasonably well educated person, I expect you to know this.

“Are you a student of ancient religions?”These are living, thriving religions practiced by billions of people, including millions in the UK today. A culturally appropriated sign used by one side in a largely euro centric battle of colonialists, for a mere 15ish years in the entirety of human history, should not force these billions of people to relinquish their ancient symbol used for millennia. The “use outside the context” was by the Nazis. Hindus and Buddhists use THEIR sign fully within context and never stopped doing so.

Polls are somewhat easily manipulated

As is the impression of the country’s feelings. Let’s just see in checks notes 4 years time and see how many MPs reform get at that point.

I really hope the battle isn’t lost. That would be so sad and unfair. As I say, if it happened here (Wales), there would be marching in the streets. We’re quite a marchy and protesty nation but that comes from standing up for ourselves, because we had to so much to lose and were oppressed (culturally, financially). Wow, I think a cog has just clicked in my head, it’s so much easier to stand up for yourself - and for your flag - when you’ve been put down in one way or another.

Supersimkin7 · 18/08/2025 21:25

@Chocolatefreak your figures show most boat migrants aren’t refugees.

1 in 3 asylum claim success rate. Yikes! Really? Typo?

I work with them a bit and these days most are fit young men from safe countries.

The people we see who are in need of safety - and there are, believe me - are more likely to be families or couples of all sexes. They’re not boat boys.

A big myth is that the young men
send money back to the village or family - unlikely, cos you can’t work for years until
you’ve got right to remain.

The other huge lie is that they’re black - rubbish. Completely multiracial turnout.

You should let MN know that their poll is being manipulated by nefarious rightwing forces. The country's feeling about their national flags - the ST G as well as the Union Jack- is not measured by the number of Reform MPs. How odd to even suggest that.

I have made no claim to be a reasonably well-educated person; on the contrary, I've now said three times that I don't know these things. And I've never been to Asia. And, "ffs"? Are you always so rude and impatient to those who know less than you?

Anyway, I don't believe you that all these people are using a symbol from long-dead languages and religions. I think you're talking out of your balloon-knot.

I'm Irish, long resident in England, & am just sick of flags generally at this stage - Union Jack, George's Cross, EU, Pride, Progress Pride, all the endless sexual orientation flags, Palestine - they can get in the bin. When I was growing up in the Republic we used to eye roll at the Northern Irish obsession with 'flegs' strung up everywhere to mark tribal territory. It's sad to see it happening here thirty years later. And all flags are about territorial marking - Pride's just as much about claiming territory for Progressives, Palestine flags can mark an area as Muslim etc etc. So I guess the English/ British right might as well have their 'flegs' out too.

Totally agree. I'm a Glaswegian who has lived in the South of England a long time and they were obsessed with "flegs" up there as well. And it's all different flag obsessions down here now. Sick of flags. Just causes division.

Birmingham has been let down so badly by it's council, now bankrupt. I understand the anger when you've paid your council tax and can't get even your recycling collected. WTF have they done with the money that the people have handed over every month.

In short; They didn’t pay women fairly so had to do a payout which bankrupt them. £760 million in claims.

Lots of words for dragons are very similar across the world, makes you think a bit! I love seeing the experience of dragons around the world - it’s really uniting!

😂I am supposed to hate it aren’t I?! According to nonsense myth! I don’t hate the English or their flag. I’ve met some wankers from England who have told me I am less than and we’re a pisspot country and we should be grateful (although no one could ever articulate what I should be grateful for). Sure my country has been damaged but not by anyone alive today. There are lots of amazing people in my life who are English and I adore them. And I want them to have their flag.

But obviously they can all go to hell for the 80 minutes we play them once a year at rugby! I’m not a saint! 😉
