Birmingham and Tower Hamlets are having St George England flags put up by privately funded groups.
I'm horrified by the implicit racism. I've seen a lot of white people applauding this and "time we took back the country" comments.
I haven't seen many non white people commenting. My feel is that they are too intimidated to do so. Am I right? Or is it indifference or is it that you're dealing with racism on a daily level and this is just one more thing.
Please don't post if you're white.whatever you feel about the flags. I want to hear on white viewd

I feel very sorry that people in England cannot fly the flag of St George because it has been hijacked in the past by nefarious people. I'm Welsh - we fly two flags, Y Ddraig Goch (Red Dragon) and St David's (black flag with yellow/gold cross) - and I can only imagine the uproar if anyone attempted to say they could not be flown because of perceived negative connotations. There would be widespread protests - I have no doubt at all.

I blydi LOVE y Ddraig Goch! I't's the best flag in the world. Just feel a bit sorry for schoolchildren asked to draw their national flag 😬🤣

I was really hoping to hear non-white views.
There's a group who have decided to put up flags on lampposts without permission. They state this is to celebrate being English and for VJ Day. But in interviews they can't but help lapse into the "getting the country back" diatribe and it shows they are abusing the flag. They certainly werent rushing to put them up for VE Day. There's nothing wrong with the flag itself. But the way it's being used is disturbing. It's every lamppost on long lines of streets. It's heavily reminiscent of nazi flags.

FFS - "reminiscent of nazi flags?" Really? Have you seen what is happening in other countries? You need to expand your views a little more.

Is this a joke?

Eastie77Returns · 18/08/2025 19:17

I’m Black British. I was talking to a Black friend the other day and we agreed that seeing the Irish, Scottish or Welsh flags flown doesn’t trouble us in the slightest but neither one of us would ever step foot in a pub that that the Flag of St George or Union Jack on show and we both feel uneasy when we see houses with the flags displayed. This is due to our lived experiences of facing racist abuse from people carrying those two flags.

All that said, if people in this country want to fly those flags then they should be able to. I was born here but my parents were not and I don’t (as far as I know) have a drop of English blood in me. I see this as a White, English country, I don’t really feel ‘part’ of it a meaningful way and I think the English should be allowed to crack on with displays of national pride if that is what is desired. I kind of look at it all with disinterest and sometimes with a bit of bemusement.

AzurePanda · 18/08/2025 19:18

@Blinky21 did you think that the flying of Palestinian flags was a good example of Birmingham’s inclusivity?

Lollipop81 · 18/08/2025 19:18

softlyfallsthesnow · 18/08/2025 14:13

I think the issue in Birmingham is that the England/UK flags are being put up in largely white areas and the council are removing them (from lamp posts etc), but Palestine flags are not being as readily removed from lamp posts in largely Asian/Muslim areas because police presence is also needed to achieve this. The police bit was in a statement from the council who own all lamp posts, street furniture etc.
So there's a perception of unfairness.

That is correct. The Pakistan flag colours were also used to light up Birmingham central library on VJ Day. All whilst the council are busy removing English flags, yet other countries flags are flying everywhere and not being removed.
its the council that actually creating animosity.
they aren’t even collecting rubbish but can go around removing English flags. Yes people are annoyed and rightly so.
i think it is a shame that flying the English flag is seen as racism. I think a lot of people are being brainwashed. It’s not about colour, it’s about being English, and there are many people of different colours and religions who are English nowadays. We should all be proud to fly the flag.

By me? What does that mean?

Oh, you mean ‘near me’

MumWifeOther · 18/08/2025 19:22

I don’t care at all. For what it’s worth, I don’t feel British despite living here nearly my whole life and integrating fully. I do think there’s growing resentment and I do think it’s quite funny that a lot of the more radical patriots probably don’t realise that St George was half Palestinian and born in Turkey 😅

MumWifeOther · 18/08/2025 19:22

AzurePanda · 18/08/2025 19:18

@Blinky21 did you think that the flying of Palestinian flags was a good example of Birmingham’s inclusivity?

Technically St George is Palestinian anyway 🥰

WhereIsMyJumper · 18/08/2025 19:23

Flags aren’t racist.

Im also not understanding why you only want non-white people to respond to you seeing as there are plenty of non-white people who are also British so it’s their flag too.

Chocolatefreak · 18/08/2025 19:24

I think the St George's flag is controversial now. Just like the swastika, which was an ancient Hindu/Buddhist/Jain symbol of good fortune, but was appropriated by the Nazis. How do you feel when you see a swastika? Warm and cosy?

Britain has many things in its past to be ashamed of, but generally as a society we are more tolerant and understanding now than ever. Let's celebrate that, and try to ensure our national symbols represent positive things too.

MumWifeOther · 18/08/2025 19:28

Livelovebehappy · 18/08/2025 19:07

Ah. But no explanation on why it might be obtuse to assume that maybe the Palestinian flag is being flown to intimidate the Jewish population in Birmingham? And apparently a leaked memo indicated that the council was slow to remove the Palestinian flags due to verbal and physical threats made when council workers attempted to take them down. Which kind of explains the intent of those flying them - and also explains their character….so as much as you want it to be the case, I really don’t believe that racial harmony exists in your city.

You’re reaching. The irony of your handle is absolutely astonishing given your prejudice! To think that holding a Palestinian flag in solidarity with those currently being starved and murdered, to call for their freedom, is somehow is an attempt to intimidate a religious group as opposed to being of the mindset that all people deserve freedom and basic human rights.

Merryoldgoat · 18/08/2025 19:30

I’m non white.

I find all flags outside of celebrations, tournaments and official buildings like embassies weird.

I find patriotism weird generally. Being proud of an accident of birth makes no sense to me.

Perfectly reasonable to be proud of the accomplishments of one’s country but just blind pride because you’re from there is something I’ve never ‘got’.

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 18/08/2025 19:30

The council is taking them down off lamposts on safety grounds, so if the homeowners like them so much, why not erect flag posts in front of their houses and hoist them there?

Dangermoo · 18/08/2025 19:32

Blinky21 · 18/08/2025 19:00

Deliberately obtuse, like I said

Obtuse, because we don't agree with you. Ridiculous.

Seriously? You’re comparing the St George flag to the swastika? 🙄 People can say they’re intimidated by it all they want, but the reality is that it’s our flag and, not wanting to sound harsh, we have every right to fly it regardless of it offending other peoples’ sensitivities. People are always going to be offended and upset about something, and need to find resilience and toughen up.

You've not given the answer, the OP wants to hear.

Did the OP ask for a specific response? I must have missed that, because I also haven't seen them disagree with anyone who doesn't think the flag is racist.

Probably because it’s highly likely planning permission would be needed. And highly likely that it would then be refused on some trumped up grounds…

Serpentstooth · 18/08/2025 19:33

Sorry to intrude, white British woman here, English, specifically. I dislike the Crusader's flag. It's insulting on so many levels I dont want to see it. It's just another way of pandering to racists and allow them to shrug their shoulders saying 'ooh, I don't know what you mean' whilst smirkingly confirming that they do know.

Right, this bullshit about everyone and his pet dog being Palestinian when historically the name was imposed by Roman colonialists on a defeated jewish people.

Comparing the flag of St George to the Swastika is an insult, to all those who suffered under Nazi oppression, as well as being hugely offensive to the English.
