Their stuff looks lovely (online on skinny models anyway) - have heard a few good things recently as i had written them off a few years ago. Anyone use them and happy with the product, quality, returns etc

i hate online clothes shop but the high street/town centers are dead in many places now so options are really limited often to just M&S, Next, H&M or Primark

I have zero respect for anyone that uses either Shein or Temu because they have zero respect for the humans involved suffering when buying their utter crap.

I won't lost any sleep over your lack of respect for me. Neither will I cry myself to sleep tonight. I will shed no tears into my Temu blanket.

Aethelredtheunsteady · 18/08/2025 16:23

The average shien customer spends 100 US dollars a month on the site and earns over 65,000 USD a year. Whilst for some it may genuinely, genuinely be their only source of cheap clothes (and even if you take the ethical issues out of it, a white t-shirt at shein seems to be the same price as a white t-shirt from Sainsbury’s but at least the Sainsbury’s one won’t potentially contain dangerous chemicals) that is definitely not the average customer.

That’s not how having an opinion works, I’m afraid. You’re simply confirming my pre-existing opinion on the types of people who shop at Shein, with aplomb!

Have a lovely day.

And you are confirming mine on the majority of MN posters. Snobby, judgmental cows.

CalzoneOnLegs · 18/08/2025 16:26

It would not take much effort for them

God forbid not everyone thinks a company with wildly unethical working practices, producing clothes which pollute the environment and are quite frankly, dangerous to wear, is funny.

Your opinion doesn’t matter much, to me.

Doobeedoobeedoobee · 18/08/2025 16:48

As others have commented, the environmental and human cost of operating models like Shein are dreadful. Even if their quality was incredible (which I wager it isn’t) I wouldn’t buy from them.

OdisseanQueen · 18/08/2025 16:50

Mumsnet - where they scream blue murder about women's rights if there's a unisex bathroom, but remain unconcerned when women in other countries are enslaved to make poor quality clothes for hollibobs.

soupyspoon · 18/08/2025 16:54

Im not convinced of the term slavery here though. It seems misused.

The workers are paid, they're free to work somewhere else. Its not slave labour.

The company appear to be breaking the law in terms of working hours.

If the work was automated where would those people work

If the hours were cut down, can the workers afford to live without then getting another job to work the same hours they originally worked?

I dont buy things from Shein and Temu, maybe out of snobbery I admit, but Im looking at a pan lid I ordered recently, from china, this computer is probably from china, my phone was probably made in china

I dont think any of us using products from China have a lot of moral high ground.

CalzoneOnLegs · 18/08/2025 16:55

@Doobeedoobeedoobee polyester tea towels 🤷🏻‍♀️ due to the exceptional absorbency of polyester - obviously

hmmnotreallysure · 18/08/2025 16:56

Slave labour and shit quality, I can always tell a SHEIN item in a charity shop by the quality of the fabric before I see the label.

yikesss · 18/08/2025 16:57

I think you get what you pay for. Some stuff is a bit naff but for what you pay most is fine!

hiintrepidheroes · 18/08/2025 17:01

It’s not snobbery to not want to wear clothes made by people who are essentially slaves, and to use that as an excuse to justify funding this is pretty shameful tbh.

I’m on minimum wage and have lost weight, I just buy few clothes more sensibly than having a wardrobe full of rubbish.

I do judge anyone who buys from these companies when they have been made aware of the ethics and environmental impact.

As for saying ‘it’s ok to buy from these companies because others are no better’, that’s not the justification you think it is.

soupyspoon · 18/08/2025 17:05

Why not? If we're happy as a society to utilise China for our products then we are all part of the huge economic and trade growth between China and us. Not to mention big Chinese business owners are buying up UK property

We have all enabled and allowed that

I dont see this as hugely different and its not slavery.

I dont have anything to feel shame about.

You can see the difference. You just choose to ignore it.

CynthiaGrace · 18/08/2025 17:06

They’re great for fancy dress. I got an entire sixties costume (dress/headband/glasses/necklace/earrings) for under a tenner. I’ve also had some lovely Disney tshirts and some work tops.

incognitomummy · 18/08/2025 17:08

My friend and I have both lost loads of weight over the last year and she recommended Shein to me as a place to get clothes to fit whilst I’m “in between”!

so I followed her advice and have bought some nice pieces. I search for cotton or linen and in my size, with good reviews. Reviews with photos are my favourite.

when I reach my goal weight I shall go back to good quality suppliers for my clothes.

Temu is recommended by lots of people on the Car / Van / caravan FB groups I’m on for bits n pieces. Like seat covers and carpets. I haven’t bought anything yet but much of it appears to be the same as items I would have purchased from Amazon at higher prices.

I think lots of clothes and household items are manufactured in China. China supply chains are not transparent. So unless you are purchasing from an ethical brand which has managed to crack that, then it’s likely you are already purchasing from the same factories but with a higher mark up!!

hiintrepidheroes · 18/08/2025 17:42

But why does losing weight justify using what is essentially slave labour? Vinted and charity shops exist. Buy some basic good quality tops etc and plan outfits rather than filling your wardrobe with rubbish.

What do you plan on doing with the clothes when they’re too big? Add them to landfill?

I’ve been losing weight, I just wear belts and buy wisely.

Jackiepumpkinhead · 18/08/2025 19:40

Nanny0gg · 18/08/2025 14:38

I wish people would stop with the caring just about how the clothes look

Does it not bother anyone that the dyes and inks used are probably toxic? (and not just to the environment)

That they're often flammable?

That the fabric is horrible?

That they're so cheap because the manufacturers and the workers are paid next to nothing?

And the pictures are all AI?

We have this thread over and over again. But all people care about is the £1 tee-shirt and the £5 dress

I'd rather have second hand from a charity shop for a couple of quid more.

I'd rather have second hand from a charity shop for a couple of quid more.

I think that’s partly the issue, why are charity shops charging more for second hand clothes than Shein are.

Charity shops aren't too expensive. SHEIN is far too cheap.

holidayhelpme123 · 18/08/2025 21:10

Cheap material, badly made, slave labour, designs stolen from small companies, fast fashion horrendous for the environment.

ViolaChomp · 18/08/2025 21:30

Some stuff is great, some stuff is badly fitting shite and everything is polyester.

Jadedpersuaded · 18/08/2025 23:14

NachoChip · 18/08/2025 11:24

I wouldn't touch Shein with a barge pole as their ethics are one of the worst. I know it's a spectrum and many other stores have questionable practices but their supply chain is particularly hidden and their treatment of workers particularly poor. Shein and Temu... you've got to ask yourself how can they make some much profit with such ridiculously low prices and who is paying the price?

Yes to all of this!

Slave and child labour is what sits behind the low prices of the tat that so many Westerners buy while idle scrolling.

If something feels too good to be true, then it is.

Think about the choices you are making and the ramifications they have before you buy that unnecessary £4 dress.

Mandylovescandy · 18/08/2025 23:19

I got some stuff from there a month or so ago and it was all great - I imagined I would be returning quite a lot of it but everything fitted well and was well made. Since reading on here about the ethics though will avoid in future but for that reason not the quality

Screamingabdabz · 18/08/2025 23:39

Anybody buying from any of those cheap Chinese websites are contributing to human misery.

I’m not a ‘snobby cow’. I haven’t got a pot to piss in but I wouldn't be happily crowing about some cheapo garment when there for the grace of God go I for the poor wretch being worked to the bone in dangerous harsh conditions to make them.

If you’re buying from them in full knowledge of their human slavery practices, frankly you’re a piece of shit.
