To think Shein has upped it’s game

Their stuff looks lovely (online on skinny models anyway) - have heard a few good things recently as i had written them off a few years ago. Anyone use them and happy with the product, quality, returns etc

i hate online clothes shop but the high street/town centers are dead in many places now so options are really limited often to just M&S, Next, H&M or Primark

Slave Labour using, credit card number harvesting, environmental disasters, vomiting out badly made shite.

Yep all this - hideous plastic clothes made from virgin fossil fuels, not to mention ripping off clothing designers with their designs

SquirrelRed · 18/08/2025 13:59

I've got a few bits from Shein, currently wearing a t-shirt from there now and haven't had any problems with the quality, I still have t-shirts from last summer that have been washed numerous times and I wear them daily. Returns are free as long as you send everything you want to back at the same time.

You probably typed this on an iPhone and drive a 4x4. Bit hypocritical.

Not really! I hate this argument as whilst I agree there are questionable ethics in most mass produced items, cars & iPhones are at least useful and last a lot longer than anything from Shein. Nobody needs six dresses in flimsy fabric, made in a sweat shop from environmentally disastrous products!

ThatCyanSheep · 18/08/2025 13:59

I used to buy from there when I was a size 28. None of the high street stores carried anything even remotely fashionable or nice for my size. I got all my dresses etc from them because they were a little better than the normal high street stores. As I’ve lost weight it’s got more disappointing. Lots of bad fabric and I can get better from H&M at not much more.

I work in a charity shop and we get so much of this crap in and people won’t buy it at £1 per item. A lot of the fabric seems to have some sort of coating on it. Did a burn 🔥 test on a dress and it burned with a massive flame and black smoke and the fabric was a sticky congealed mess, would have stuck to skin. It needs banning from importing to the UK

This is such an important point about them and Temu - they do not need to comply with UK quality standards. You have no idea if what you’re buying is safe

That is horrifying, especially when considering people will put their children in Shein clothes.

Don't worry I tell my toddler not to smoke or light fireworks when she's wearing a £1.50 Shein dress.

Oreosareawful · 18/08/2025 14:05

I've kitted the kids and myself out with holiday clothes from shien and we are all very happy with whats arrived. The swimwear is excellent.

The snobbery and barely disguised racism on this thread is hilarious, god forbid the poors have clothes that aren’t from Boden or M&S 😂
They are too good for such things on this site OP

Wheres the racism and wheres the snobbery?

It's the same at the CS I work at. Overrun with the stuff. Wouldn't even donate it to the night shelter or the refugee centre, it's that much of an insult.

I'm really glad you mentioned you did a fire test, we had thought of refashioning some of it into dressing-up clothes for DC. Certainly not now 😮

I should bloody well hope a t-shirt from last summer is still fine! What sort of low standard is that?

333FionaG · 18/08/2025 14:11

I have far too many clothes as it is, and would rather buy from charity shops than an unethical firm like Shein. I’m going for the one in/one out rule with my wardrobe.

Shein products look great in photos, as if they have exquisite embroidery and embellishments on, when in reality, it’s a shoddy, plasticky one dimensional print. I know this because a friend ordered matching T-shirts for everyone going to her hen party. They were crackling with static, shiny nylon, horrible garments, not even absorbent enough to use as a dishcloth.

soupyspoon · 18/08/2025 14:12

T shirts from anywhere are notorious for being misshapen after a few wears

Theres a woman at work who always looks really nice and everytime I ask her where sometning is from that shes wearing she says Shein!!

The products look ok to me.

I judge people who buy from Shein and Temu

I don’t think they would really care if you did or not

Untrue. Any t-shirt will lose its shape if it is not washed correctly and not reshaped while damp. They don't give care instructions for shits and giggles you know!

I have t-shirts from Primark, Matalan and New Look that have kept their shape for more years than I'd like to day. I had a lovely Cos t-shirt last year (via CS). DH mistakenly washed it with his work gear on a cycle that was far too long and hot. It came out with warped seams and a saggy neck. Couldn't save it.

I know laundry is boring AF but a little more care and attention really does help your clothes last longer.

For reasons best known to yourself you think it is funny, but there is a reason highly flammable clothes are not on general sale in the UK.

I don’t care if someone judges me for it. I was huge, miserable and wanted something nice to wear

I have bought expensive t-shirts before and they look terrible after a few washes, a lot of t shirts don’t last that long unless they are quite heavy material and I don’t like those

Nanny0gg · 18/08/2025 14:29

ThatNiftyLimeCat · 18/08/2025 12:34

Well I love them. I buy a lot from there as I love fast fashion and I’ve never had any problems 🤷‍♀️

And you're ok with the workers being paid peanuts?

Work the prices back...

BertieBotts · 18/08/2025 14:30

I don't trust those drop ship import companies. They don't care about following safety regulations, which you might scoff at but I think it's important to be able to trust that things are safe without having to second guess it.

For example the flammability test someone mentioned, plus they have been found to have unacceptably high lead content in their clothing. Another issue is things like poppers and buttons coming off children's clothes and causing a choking hazard. Of course buttons can always fall off but most things are well made that they don't fall off that easily.

I like the fact I never have to even think about these things when I buy from a reputable company that cares about getting shut down by trading standards.

Tryingmybest100 · 18/08/2025 14:31

I buy a lot from Shein & apart from 2 tops which I returned as I didnt like the fabric, Ive been really impressed with the quality and fit of their items. I read the reviews, look at the customer photos taken and no what type of clothes suit me so I only order what I think I will like.

I put a big order through on Friday 8th August and it came in 3 separate parcels with 1 arriving 3 days later, 1 5 days later and one yesterday so Im happy with their delivery times too.

I also think they have upped their game & tbh I dont have enough money to care about their environmental credentials etc. I have lost a lot of weight over the past year & Im enjoying being able to buy fashionable clothes that I can afford that I look good in.

ChaiLarious · 18/08/2025 14:33

SemperIdem · 18/08/2025 14:25

I just find the level of snobbery towards fast fashion and anything that isn't deemed middle class enough funny. There are plenty of children's wear items including pyjamas etc sold in UK based high street stores and supermarkets that would also set alight if a naked flame were held to them.

TappyGilmore · 18/08/2025 14:34

It’s very hit and miss. DD buys quite a few things from there, some of it’s great, a lot of it is trash, and some things are in between. She’s currently nursing a sore arm after wearing a top all weekend that appeared to be one of the better quality items, but has given her a bad allergic reaction (and her arm looks awful).

I’m totally against it for ethical reasons but I appreciate that a student on a very limited budget is the wrong person to have this debate with. I try to educate but leave her to make up her own mind.

I will say though that returns are great. You do have to check as not all items can be returned. But it’s so easy to send stuff back and money is usually refunded the very next day. So it can be worth taking a chance on it.

Nanny0gg · 18/08/2025 14:38

I wish people would stop with the caring just about how the clothes look

Does it not bother anyone that the dyes and inks used are probably toxic? (and not just to the environment)

That they're often flammable?

That the fabric is horrible?

That they're so cheap because the manufacturers and the workers are paid next to nothing?

And the pictures are all AI?

We have this thread over and over again. But all people care about is the £1 tee-shirt and the £5 dress

I'd rather have second hand from a charity shop for a couple of quid more.

Digdongdoo · 18/08/2025 14:38

All these returns too. Be aware that they all end up in landfill/burned. They aren't resold. It's one thing to buy and wear endless plastic clothing, but it's even worse for so much of it to end up straight in the bin.
