How long is acceptable to wait in the salon for your appointment?

ThatCyanSheep · 16/08/2025 10:51

Just that really. Currently at the salon and my stylist is running at least half an hour behind, I’ve been waiting for 25 minutes as it stands. She knows I’m here and told me to take a seat, but I’m just wondering how long you’d wait before saying something?!

Having no tip jar does not mean people don’t tip. My salon doesn’t (and never would!) have a tip jar. You tip your own stylist/technician in cash before you leave. Standard.

Nah not "standard". It's not even standard to carry cash these days. You're talking about some unfortunate local custom.

So people who can afford to tip should get better service (and basic courtesy) than people who can’t afford to tip??!
yeah, bollocks to that.
mumsnet privilege at its finest

I think a lot of people believe money should buy better service, sadly. Its also sad that people who arent tipping for selfish reasons (ie to get better service in their minds) do so out of pity for us poor hairdressers. Id rather recieve nothing than either of those!

lizzyBennet08 · 16/08/2025 15:01

Always tip to avoid these kind of delays.

Puffalicious · 16/08/2025 15:03

I'm always astounded by these threads/ comments. I've been going to my hairdresser for about 18 years. I've moved locations to go to him twice- it's now a 45 minute drive, but he's worth it. I never tip. He's the salon owner & far wealthier than me. He washes my hair too, so no junior to tip (I would if there was a junior, they don't earn much). I believe that my loyalty every 8 weeks for 18 years is enough to show my appreciation.

OP, I also don't tip taxi drivers- taxis are extortionate!

lizzyBennet08 · 16/08/2025 15:03

Totally off topic I typically tip a fiver and give it to my main stylist even though it's often a lovely junior that washes my hair or puts the colour on? Do people typically split the tip or rely on the main stylist to share?

No one asks for tips... Lol.
Genuinely wonder how you didnt know tips are a thing.

I don’t think this person is originally from Britain, sounds like she is from a different culture

Who’s she, the cat’s mother?

I’m English. Tipping is not something that’s the norm here and I’m sorry but you’re deluding yourself if you think it is. My 72 year old dad never tips! It’s just not the done thing here.

Nobody tips. We’re in England, not American!

Wow. Just wow. No wonder you get poor service.

So what? I always tip as well. I pay by card and give 10% cash. There are no containers on show but there are under the counter. I also tip the young hair washer.

Tip the bellboy handsomely? Do you holiday in the 1950s? 😅

I don't know how else to describe the bell boy in a hotel.....

ThatCyanSheep · 16/08/2025 14:48

I know tips are a thing. I’ve never once thought to tip people who are earning more than I am! Nor do I think I should be tipping an extra £5 for a food delivery when I’m paying £25 for food and £5 for delivery!

I agree with you, I rarely tip either except for in restaurants

Dita73 · 16/08/2025 15:09

Definitely a wind up

You seem to live on a different planet and in a different decade.

Why? Because we tip? What a narrow minded view. Different people, with different approaches to hospitality, can coexist on the same planet you know....!

Also you need to tip the Amazon driver. And Evri. And the postman. And all the people you buy from on Vinted. Grin

I always give my postman a tip at Christmas.

Not a wind up. Just someone who didn’t realise I’m supposed to be paying 10-20% extra for a service! It’s priced at that point for a reason.

Mothership4two · 16/08/2025 15:13

Of course you don't have to tip and if I was paying £100+ I don't think I would. I don't tip my stylist because she owns the salon and I was taught that is a no-no. She usually washes my hair first, but if another member of staff/a trainee does it, then I'll hand them a fiver before I leave.

We usually tip waiting staff if there is no service charge, but again I think that is up to you and obviously not if you have had mediocre/bad service.

I'm not sure what posters who profess absolute shock and horror at non-tippers are trying to get across. Obviously not everyone does in the UK

I’m sorry, but please don’t speak for all Brits. A lot of us do tip as a matter of course. Some don’t.
Even you have admitted to tipping waiting staff.
Please don’t generalise for a whole nation.

No, that's not why. Do you genuinely not understand?
It's the reference to your DH doing the tipping in particular, calling the porter a 'bellboy' and being 'well looked after' for the duration of your stay. Other people have made the same comment.

Hope people have been tipping their childminder or else their kid will be the last one getting any attention...

I always give my postman a tip at Christmas.

And the bin men, milk man and window cleaner.

When are postman was off work for several months following an accident, all the neighbours in our road had a whip round for him.

So, you think people are kept waiting unless they pay over the salon price?

ThatCyanSheep · 16/08/2025 15:18

We chuck our bin men £20 at Christmas, we tape it to the top of the black bin (in an envelope) - but that’s not a tip, it’s a gift!

Dita73 · 16/08/2025 15:19

@ThatCyanSheep you didn’t realise?! Where have you been for the last 40 years?! It’s unbelievable to think that you don’t tip

Weepixie · 16/08/2025 15:19

Id expect to be told there was a delay as soon as arrived and I’d be okay about it as late no as it wasn’t going to be any longer than 10-15 mins. And if they said it would be 15 mins maximum I’d only wait 15 mins for them.
