How long is acceptable to wait in the salon for your appointment?

Just that really. Currently at the salon and my stylist is running at least half an hour behind, I’ve been waiting for 25 minutes as it stands. She knows I’m here and told me to take a seat, but I’m just wondering how long you’d wait before saying something?!

Well, quite.

At Christmas I give my nail lady and hairdresser a card and some homemade baked goods, which I always thought was nice enough. Where does it end with tipping? We have the same Sainsbury’s delivery driver each week, am I meant to tip him? Do I tip the bin men? When we go out for a meal we round it up and leave that as a tip but that’s about it!

I give the bin men chocolates at christmas, and the post man too. I dont have to, but i appreciate what they do.

But it's true. Although I accept bellboy might be a dated term (though definitely still used in many of the Asian hotels we have visited relatively recently).

I'm not saying we were given VIP treatment, just a fact that the service improves when you tip consistently.

That doesn't warrant us living on another planet.

I understand it’s still a term routinely used in different parts of the world, and probably in the more upmarket hotels. But not everyone is aware and can be very judgemental when they come across the term.

Nevereatcardboard · 16/08/2025 16:55

20 minutes then I’d leave. I stopped going to hair salons because of this sort of thing and now use a mobile hairdresser who always lets me know if they’ll be more than 10 minutes early or late.

I must be the biggest arsehole that ever walked the earth. I never tip, why would I? They are doing their job and getting a wage, the same as me and I don’t get tipped. The tipping culture is absolutely ridiculous!

I don't either! I just pay the price for what I am having done/eating. It's fine!

Sometimessmiling · 16/08/2025 18:14

I don't tip, no one tips me at work. Let's move away from the tipping culture. Certainly not after that long w^

I ALWAYS tip. Always have. In UK.

Agree..Christ the a
prentices rely on tips half the time as their wage is so poor..remember back 8n the ‘80’s, we were always tipped.

fetchacloth · 16/08/2025 18:31

A good salon would let you know roughly how long the wait would be as soon as you'd arrived and, if necessary, give you the option to rebook if that is your preference.
My salon did that once, so I nipped into the newsagents next door to buy a magazine. When I returned I was given a cup of coffee and the wait was around an hour.
The reason for the wait turned out to be that the client before me changed her mind about the colour she had done so it had to be redone. Not the salons fault but these things happen and some customers are oblivious to the inconvenience they cause others.

They don’t… they really don’t…

I’m sorry, but please don’t speak for all Brits. A lot of us do tip as a matter of course. Some don’t.
Even you have admitted to tipping waiting staff.
Please don’t generalise for a whole nation.

Agree, I have lived in 6 UK cities (1 north, 1 midlands & 4 south) and tips have been completely the norm. Optional, but completely common place.

Nearly an hour behind and I’m in the chair! I’ve never once been asked to tip

They don't have to ask, it is expected

lemonraspberry · 16/08/2025 20:24

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 16/08/2025 14:49

.... Hairdressers are frequently tipped in UK!

Have you been living underground?! 😂

When I am paying £80+ for a wash, cut & blow dry I will not be tipping. If they are unable to pay their staff a decent wage with those charges the salon is being run by idiots.

and they have just raised their prices by £5 to cover the rise in national insurance.

Nobody tips. We’re in England, not American!

I ALWAYS tip my hairdresser and I am in the UK

Ugh I hate this excuse.

I tip but stopped 10% a while ago. Gave £2 today on a £45 service. It was £40 a few months ago

Why did you tip £2, out of interest?

niadainud · 16/08/2025 21:40

I think it's really rude to leave you waiting for more than about five or ten minutes without coming to give you an idea of when you will be seen, given that it only takes a matter of seconds to do that.

As for tipping, when a haircut can easily cost over £100 and takes maybe 40 minutes, I don't really see why paying even more money is necessary.

It’s a good point though? I am delivering a service in my job. Nobody drops me a tip after a phone call, and I’m on minimum wage

I just find it weird that apparently my hairdresser who’s off abroad all the time is apparently expecting a tip?!

Maybe she doesn't ... it sounds like you are jealous of her.

I’m not. At all - you’ve had it out for me since the start of the thread. I get on really well with her.

Haven’t RTFT. My hair salon rings me if my stylist is running more than 10 minutes late. I think that’s good business practice tbh.

JKFan · 16/08/2025 23:18

I’m 60. I never used to tip my hairdresser and had never heard of anyone doing so, then started coming across references to tipping, so thought I had made a faux pas. For unrelated reasons I changed hairdressers about 10 years ago so started tipping. My hairdresser made it very clear that while it’s nice, it’s not necessary. There are times when I don’t have change and she’s not at all concerned about that.
She does always run late, but I know that’s not just for me. she will also stay late on occasion if we can’t find an appointment time that will suit both of us, but she commented recently that that is something she only does for those clients who have been with her for years and have followed her through a number of salons.

Incidentally,I realised that the various references I had come across to tipping hairdressers were all American, so had never been sure how common it was in the UK. From this thread it’s clear that there is no standard practice one way or another and each side thinks their way of doing things is universal.

No I haven't " had it in for you" . I've just said the opposite of what you want to hear 🤷‍♀️

I’ve never seen a single person tip. The salon is card only, no option to tip on the card machine, and no tip jar on the desk!

I grew up in the 60s and 70s. Hairdressing was known as the worst paying profession, so DM always tipped (10%), as do I. Mind you, my hairdresser is also a friend and only charges 'mates rates', so I am more than happy to tip.
