How long is acceptable to wait in the salon for your appointment?

ThatCyanSheep · 16/08/2025 10:51

Just that really. Currently at the salon and my stylist is running at least half an hour behind, I’ve been waiting for 25 minutes as it stands. She knows I’m here and told me to take a seat, but I’m just wondering how long you’d wait before saying something?!

I’ve never seen a single person tip. The salon is card only, no option to tip on the card machine, and no tip jar on the desk!

I ask them to add £20 tip to the price for a tip, should really be 20pc but I can't afford it.

The entire reason America has such a tipping culture is because they don’t pay their workers a living wage. We have a lawful living wage and my hairdresser is definitely earning more than me!

Are you British born or did you originate from somewhere else

SandyDunesCoffeeShack · 16/08/2025 14:18

Hairdressers are usually prompt. Is this a brand new

When did it start being 20%? It was always 5-10%, which is why I always erred on the 10% side. Pushing anything up to 20% tip would probably push some occasionally affordable things for me into the realms of unaffordable.

Itiswhysofew · 16/08/2025 14:19

15 mins. The hairdresser I go to doesn't keep customers waiting at all. I used to go to someone who'd often keep me waiting an hour or more. One of the reason I moved on from there.

BandBChocolat · 16/08/2025 14:25

I don't tip. I used to but what I have done is so expensive and in 'theory' it' supposed to be a percentage of the price. I pay around £150 for my hair.

I think tipping is condescending. My stylist is a professional and paid a proper salary. I'm paying for what they do so why should they be 'tipped'?

I do buy them a lovely gift at Christmas, however.

Tipping comes from a time when some people were paid a pittance- maybe like the junior-juniors who only washed hair, so you gave them a bit extra to bolster their wages.

You don’t tip a delivery driver? You honestly must be joking

I'm actually genuinely confused.

You tip your Evri delivery person? DPD? Amazon Logistics? And presumably b y that logic your postman... ?! For every delivery?!

What about if you get your supermarket food shop delivered, do you tip them too?

How about your bin men? Or does taking things away from your house not count, just the people who bring things? And if so, why do you see their service as less?

What about the people who bring you food to the drive thru window at McDonalds - do they deserve a tip too?

I am truly bamboozled that I am supposed to tip the people who are paid to bring things to my house. My grandad is an Evri driver and he never gets tips, except maybe at Christmas from his regulars.

There's no set tip. It's not restaurant with a service charge!

Tips used to be given to the poorly paid if you felt they had gone out of their way to do something well above what was the norm so you showed your 'thanks'.

It's outdated.

ThatCyanSheep · 16/08/2025 14:34

Okay. Just got done.

the reason she was late was because I was blocked out as her only client today. Not because she’s “unpopular” or anything like that, but because I was having colour and extensions put back in after a month long break. The owner of the salon called in sick this morning and was re-allocating clients, she agreed to come in early to do this lady, but her extensions were in awful shape (due to her own lack of maintenance, not the salon!) and so took a lot longer than expected to do. That’s it. Not because I’m an arsehole who doesn’t tip.

I always tip my hairdresser but I don't like the attitude that it's somehow ok to have poor service if you don't tip. Hair appointments aren't cheap and are a treat these days so you should have a good experience when you're there.

I agree with you. I give the postman a tenner at Christmas and that's as far as my tipping goes!

I used to tip at the hair dressers but they changed the pricing structure so my stylist is more expensive than the others so why on earth would I tip now?

Kaybee50 · 16/08/2025 14:41

I always tip my hairdresser (I pay online so easy to add an extra £5 or £10) She is fab! (In UK)

The more I think about it, the more confused I am.

My delivery drivers are usually really good at throwing stuff over our gate if they try to deliver and we're not home. But if I was giving them cash every time they handed stuff to me, surely they'd be more inclined to take my parcel away and try again when I was home. That'd be really annoying as sometimes I'm on a call or need the items more urgently than I can be home to accept them. I don't see how tipping them would get me a better service.

You don’t do end of school year gifts for teachers?! Very common in the UK.
Class teacher in Primary.
Form teacher at Secondary.

Oh yes, I always sent in an end of year gift. I never tipped them though.

PAC69 · 16/08/2025 14:45

No one asks for a tip however if i have received good service in a restaurant I'd tip. The same goes for hair and beauty services if you have received a good personal service I'd tip 5 -10% and I'm sure it would be appreciated.

I’m sure it would too. But I’ve just spent nearly £350 all in, with products etc included (which I make a point of buying from them, even though they’re cheaper online!), I can’t afford to make that a nearly £400 purchase

Nearly an hour behind and I’m in the chair! I’ve never once been asked to tip

No one asks for tips... Lol.
Genuinely wonder how you didnt know tips are a thing.

Cheesyfootballs01 · 16/08/2025 14:47

OP I never tip either! Tbh I’m surprised at the outrage on here that somehow not tipping makes you a terrible person or something 🤣

I can’t fathom how someone should tip a delivery driver, when you have already paid extra for delivery in the first place!!

And as for tipping a courier eg Evri - really?? I’ve already paid postage for that deli so why on earth would I pay again?

I would definitely never tip a hairdresser

I know tips are a thing. I’ve never once thought to tip people who are earning more than I am! Nor do I think I should be tipping an extra £5 for a food delivery when I’m paying £25 for food and £5 for delivery!

Nobody tips. We’re in England, not American!

.... Hairdressers are frequently tipped in UK!

Have you been living underground?! 😂

It’s definitely not as frequent as you think.

I’ve used three salons in my life. The first did have a tips jar but it was well known that that was because the stylists gave discounts to their family members and the family members would “tip” to bring it up to the standard salon price. The second didn’t tip at all, nor does the third one. This one requires deposits at the time of booking - so two months for me! Their tip can be the interest they’re earning on that deposit.

Plastictreees · 16/08/2025 14:52

@ThatCyanSheep They’re really not. Certainly not in the high end salons in the cities I’ve lived in across England and Scotland, anyway.

Having no tip jar does not mean people don’t tip. My salon doesn’t (and never would!) have a tip jar. You tip your own stylist/technician in cash before you leave. Standard.

Maybe if your salon is dodging tax etc. 😬

Not the salon, but perhaps the stylist!
That’s on them, not me.
