To be sick of the royal propaganda the UK is fed?

I know most people don’t give a damn about the Windsors any more .

However , in a week when we learn about Philip’s affairs - notably with Sarah Ferguson’s mother ( all covered up of course like the rest of their debachery) we are now expected to swallow the line that William and Kate’s next mansion is ‘paid for by William and Kate themselves ‘

No . That’s not the complete truth .Every penny the Windsors have , they have taken from the people . We now know William and Charles make millions from public services like the NHS schools and charities . We only know about this as a result of dogged journalistic digging . And most of the mainstream media barely covered the scandal .

There are many threads here about how the UK is in steep decline and how people are suffering . Yet the royals are taking in half a billion a year and charging charities on top !

At least admit to us that all their money is stolen from us ?

Oh and if you haven’t heard the queen knew all about Andrew pocketing money via ‘pitch at the palace’

She was told repeatedly by officials . She did nothing
Can we have some facts please ?
The Windsors are a total facade - they are all like Andrew - he’s just the latest fall guy .

The royals do pay tax - that changed under Queen Elizabeth. I’m not fussed about the royal family but I am unconvinced a president would cost less.

I agree there's little reason to assume a president would cost less, but it's worth remembering that Charles and William only pay tax "voluntarily^, and not at all on some income which for anyone else would be taxed automatically

Ukisgaslit · 16/08/2025 15:10

The general consensus is a figurehead president.

Nothing convoluted about it

Doesn’t Scotland print its own currency? They seem to cope
Multiple European nations switched to the euro overnight .

Furthermore I suspect any talk of reform ( like paying all their taxes!) and the Windsors will walk .
And you know what will happen?
Nothing
Just like when Elizabeth died after 70 years on the throne . Left a legacy of a big fat nothing
(If you overlook the mess she made of her own family and the 170 laws she made sure didn’t apply to them )

The British constitution isn't something that you'd invent today, but its inbuilt protections and balances are vastly powerful compared to other countries

I don't know if you've noticed, @cranfordscones, but we don't actually have a formal, written constitution - just a mishmash of custom and precedent which can be tweaked this way and that according to the taste of whoever in power

Some of us consider this a glaring omission, but I guess that's really one for a different thread

thenightsky · 16/08/2025 15:47

What gets me is that when Parliament was illegally prorogued by Johnson, the Royal family, which is SUPPOSED to act as one of the last ditch checks and balances on Government, was either unable or unwilling to do anything. It showed just how bloody useless and redundant it was.

Yes... this was when I thought 'what the fuck are you for'.

2dogsandabudgie · 16/08/2025 15:48

William and Kate are still very popular. In March of this year 74% off the British public had a positive impression of them.

Charles and Camilla aren't so popular but I think the majority of the public would like to see William and Catherine as King and Queen.

That will be 74% of the survey which is completely different to 74% of.the British public.

I suspect a large part of this is that there are panto villains around to deflect from their laziness. Once Andrew is too old and no one cares about Harry and Meghan they will either have to throw one of their own kids to the wolves or their lack of work ethic will become clear when they are hardly seen except for dress ups. William had not demonstrated anything apart from a desire to do as little as possible apart from accumulate wealth and houses so I don't know why people are expecting him to suddenly reform the Monarchy when he's King! Or that two lazy parents would bring up kids who will want to do any different.

CathyorClaire · 16/08/2025 16:22

Best we can say to this is that at least they'll have less scope to hide their lack of work ethic.

"Fed" by whom, and who is "we"? If you read the Guardian and the Independent and stay off mindless social media, you're hardly likely to collide with loads of royalist propaganda!

No, what was wrong was that Boris Johnson and Jacob Rees-Mogg were not charged with treason, as they should have been.

I would like a slimmed down Royal Family, fewer homes for example, and an end to the theoretical royal prerogative. Prime Minister chosen by a vote of the House of Commons, for example.

Haven't RTWT but currently reading ‘Entitled’ and it is altering how I feel about the BRF.

In what way has it altered your opinion ?

Futurehappiness · 16/08/2025 17:10

The final nail in the coffin - and there were already plenty of nails - should have been last year when it emerged that the Royal estates (which do not pay taxes on their profits) have received millions of pounds in rents from public bodies like the NHS, schools and the armed forces as well as from charities. Think about that - whilst doing performance charity work they are profiting from those very same charities on the sly. William & Charles are also effectively slum landlords.

If you read my posts upthread you’d see I referring to more than tabloids .

The BBC during the mournathon period , the lack of coverage of the William and Charles Duchy scandals - in fact the lack of coverage of the scandals in general!

Yes the guardian does good work and so did the Times and channel 4 when uncovering the right royal rip offs but there is little general persistent coverage .

They are all up to all sorts .

They always need a scapegoat

Poor Louis is next for that role .

I agree with you and I'm surprised there wasn't more of an uproar over the NHS etc. That was a brilliant bit of investigative journalism but was barely talked about!

LakieLady · 16/08/2025 17:53

Astrak · 16/08/2025 10:42

If the anti-Royalists bothered to do any research on the British Royal Family, they would learn that they bring in approximately £52million pounds per annum in tourism and related services and cost each British tax payer approximately 77p per person per year.

Tourists don't come here just because we have a monarchy. There are plenty of countries that have dispensed with their monarchy (or never had it) and still generate loads of money from tourism.

I agree. Arguably this country could benefit from abolishing the monarchy as the palaces and sites would still be there but with greater accessibility to the public (look at Versailles). Nobody who claims the RF themselves have benefited tourism or generated other income has ever been able to present any evidence that concretely proves this.
