To be sick of the royal propaganda the UK is fed?

I know most people don’t give a damn about the Windsors any more .

However , in a week when we learn about Philip’s affairs - notably with Sarah Ferguson’s mother ( all covered up of course like the rest of their debachery) we are now expected to swallow the line that William and Kate’s next mansion is ‘paid for by William and Kate themselves ‘

No . That’s not the complete truth .Every penny the Windsors have , they have taken from the people . We now know William and Charles make millions from public services like the NHS schools and charities . We only know about this as a result of dogged journalistic digging . And most of the mainstream media barely covered the scandal .

There are many threads here about how the UK is in steep decline and how people are suffering . Yet the royals are taking in half a billion a year and charging charities on top !

At least admit to us that all their money is stolen from us ?

Oh and if you haven’t heard the queen knew all about Andrew pocketing money via ‘pitch at the palace’

She was told repeatedly by officials . She did nothing
Can we have some facts please ?
The Windsors are a total facade - they are all like Andrew - he’s just the latest fall guy .

And do we need a president as a head of state? Can’t the PM do that? It’s all just flannel.

The royals do pay tax - that changed under Queen Elizabeth. I’m not fussed about the royal family but I am unconvinced a president would cost less.

They do not pay all their taxes.
They ‘volunteer ‘ an amount that they themselves deem adequate.
They decide for themselves which expenses are tax exempt.
They do not pay corporation tax on the very corporate capitalist ventures they ( or rather others) run for profit . Why not ? They do not want to
They do not pay inheritance tax . How many of us are selling houses to pay inheritance tax after paying tax all our lives?

Charles when he was Duke of Cornwall was found to be attempting ( or did - I’m not sure ) to put his then mistress / girlfriend Camilla’s household expenses through with his own
William however has closed the books on his finances . He’s even less transparent

I’m sick to the back teeth of it. On the news this morning it’s how the king and queen were brought to tears at the VJ events yesterday.

I’m sorry but it’s ridiculous. It’s high time we did away with the monarchy.

YANBU
I hate the way that the Royal family are centred at this kind of event. It should have been about the veterans and civilians who had been in the Far East during the war not KC and Camilla.
I watched the VE day parade a few months back and far too much of the commentary focused on the Wales and their kids.

If the anti-Royalists bothered to do any research on the British Royal Family, they would learn that they bring in approximately £52million pounds per annum in tourism and related services and cost each British tax payer approximately 77p per person per year.

The tourists will still come as the buildings will still be there. France brings in more £ through tourism than the UK, 71m Euros in 2024 which equates to around £60m. That "77p per person" would be better spent elsewhere than on them.

I don't know how you didn't know about Phillip's affairs and Mountbatten. It was hardly a secret. My DM knew and she died 26 years ago.

This. 61, been aware for donkey’s years.

People saying that the royal family is worth far more than we pay for them, it's better than a president, are missing the point that currently there is a very legitimate case to make that they are taking the piss. There is no incentive to actually show up to engagements because they are being subsidised regardless. There is no accountability.

x2boys · 16/08/2025 10:15

I agree i think it's ridiculous in this day and age we still have a Royal family.

And what’s the alternative? A president? Yep, that works really well in countries that have them doesn’t it? Look at America - scandal with nearly every president there’s been. And far more corruption. Much prefer having a Royal Family who generate far more money from tourism in London than a president ever would.

CranfordScones · 16/08/2025 11:01

Sadly these sorts of opinions are going to get us in to trouble. Constitutional and 'Supreme' and even International courts won't save you when the people get an appetite to elect an authoritarian government. The British constitution isn't something that you'd invent today, but its inbuilt protections and balances are vastly powerful compared to other countries. Some powers are just too important to be vested in elected politicians. Our monarchy is a cheap price to pay for those protections. Don't sacrifice them on the altar of fairness and equality.

You want a President elected by the people? How about Russell Brand? At its height, his fame was spectacular and he had the common touch and expressed political desire. Thankfully the route to power as an MP wasn't his style. But if he'd had the chance to go directly to President, he's have jumped at it. And no doubt solved all our problems - his Booky Wook had all the answers, didn't it? And if not him, some other fame hungry narcissist bred in their thousands by social media.

No, we need the royal family now more than ever.

Have you ever considered getting angry about stuff that really matters? I’m a republican, but this level of bile shows as much of an obsession with royalty as that of the most devout supporter of the crown. I just don’t waste headspace on them.

But the point is, it makes no difference whether Royal Family or a President. There’s going to be corruption and bank handers in both establishments, so we’re stuck between a rock and a hard place. We have to have one of them.

The spin on the piece about W&K moving house has really annoyed me.

They are paying for it themselves - yes, out of our money

They won't have live in staff - no, they'll just live 5 minutes walk away, so much more relatable

It's their forever home - absolute bollocks, he's going to be King and live in a palace. Actually several palaces.

Yes me too !

The transparent PR is just too much

I know some people fall for it

But fewer and fewer

I don’t want to focus on the numerous Windsor affairs tittle tattle - but the aspect that annoys me is they are much more dissolute than the average person yet we pay for their anointing as head of COE .
The aww at Elizabeth and Philip when we know about Philip’s numerous affairs ( I didn’t know that he had a long affair with Sarah’s mother ) . I used to see royalists lash out at any suggestion of affairs . That has gone quiet

But it’s the pedophiles ans sex abusers that deeply disturb me . It’s not just Andrew and Mountbatten

It is quite funny that the UK is sliding into fascism and some people still think that the royals are somehow the last bastion that will protect against us becoming America 2.0 (if Farage becomes PM they will do nothing because they don't interfere with democracy)

Exactly this

No transparency no accountability
And royalists says they have no power
No accountability and sealed papers and wills IS power and that’s not even taking into account that the Windsors can vet bills and exclude themselves if they feel like it ( which they do)

Interesting. I see it as quite a reasonable and mild debate, no fizzing or spitting.

Sort of what a public forum was set up for?

I take your point to some extent but how can you be republican without knowing the extent of the corruption?

I read ‘and what do you do ? years ago and it really opened my eyes . I was a republican instinctively as soon as I became aware of the political system in the uk but you need details .
You can’t just ignore the Windsors .

🙄 they’re a global brand that brings at least £2billion a year into the uk. It’s often the only reason people actually visit the uk.

They cost us about £1.50 each per year.

Stupid to think it’s a good idea for them to go. Yes they’re problematic sometimes. Andrew needs to go, Garry too.

If Phillip had affairs, Charles had a long running affair, when will the truth about William come out?
