Sister needs weight loss jabs but doesn’t qualify

Mondaytuesdayhappydays · 15/08/2025 00:00

My step sister has been struggling with her weight all her life
In order fir her to keep her weight stable she has been fighting food noise and cravings since about 13 but has resisted which she describes as a full time job along with exercise which is baked into her life but she hates.
she is a healthy weight and quite slim but at 44 wants a breather from her life revolving around food and food noise.
She wants the jab for some time off all this

Im fat and qualify and use the jabs - 3.5 stone down but still very overweight and now finding that that the suppression lasts longer so have agreed to order my next lot as the starting dose of 2.5 for her so she can have a month or two off

AIBU
she is riddled with food noise and has had over 30 years from a teen with total
food obsession. Virtually sticking her fist in her mouth and doing exercises rather than overeat
agreed she hasn’t put weight on by overeating as has managed not giving in but this has been torture for her and she needs a break

I don't quite know where to begin. I sincerely hope you are not serious about doing something potentially incredibly dangerous.

HansHolbein · 15/08/2025 00:03

YABU to give prescribed medication to someone who hasn’t been medically cleared for it.

Then again, it’s the school holidays and it’s late at night, so who knows.

SummerCanDoOne · 15/08/2025 00:04

Are you aware that people have died from taking the jabs when they've not been prescribed them?

ScanTheCan · 15/08/2025 00:05

You can’t be serious

ToKittyornottoKitty · 15/08/2025 00:05

So you are planning to give her your injections that you get through the NHS, but you are over weight and NEED the injections, whereas she is slim and just wants them but doesn’t want to pay? Seriously? It’s dangerous, irresponsible, and stupid on both your parts.

TidyDancer · 15/08/2025 00:06

You aren’t being serious are you? Why would you do something so reckless?

nocoolnamesleft · 15/08/2025 00:07

There are potentially severe side effects. Risking, say, pancreatitis when you’re morbidly obese is a calculated risk. Taking the same risks when not even overweight would be insane.

Starling7 · 15/08/2025 00:10

She could try hypnotherapy - I didn't expect it to work for me, but I have found it incredibly effective ❤️

GiveItAGoMalcom · 15/08/2025 00:10

What on earth did people used to say before 'food noise' became the cool and trendy must-use phrase?

Anyway that aside, of course YABU and I'm sure you know it, just as everyone on this thread will be able to work out you know it too.

When I get to her weight I will still qualify for them?
so not sure where there harm is ?
If she put on two stone she would qualify anyway?

she just wants a breather

That’s a huge warning for an eating disorder. She doesn’t want the food noise to stop despite what she says. She wants to lose weight and it’s not healthy physically or mentally. You could trigger a really serious eating disorder.

No I pay privately obviously

This is awful. She needs professional medical help, not weight loss medication.

Why is that obvious? Not that it makes a difference. If she isn’t eligible for them, even privately then you’d be putting her in danger, obviously.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 15/08/2025 00:19

Food noise is an addiction response, when I had an addiction (not food) it was all I thought about.
Open eyes, have fix.
Similarly to alcoholic who needs a drink in the day, your Dsis can spend her life battling, or treat her addiction.
The 12 step programme enables people to deal with obsessive thoughts, helping take the desire away.
She would greatly benefit from joining over eating anonymous.

I did the jabs to get thin end of - no research didn’t care
but apparently the way they work is to address a gene/hormone us fatties are lacking that make us feel full
or satiated? Or something like that
So - well she clearly doesn’t have that gene/hormone either
as has been battling the same feelings as me for decades ? just because she managed not to give in and eat and get overweight doesn’t mean she doesn’t have the same deficiency no?

No, no, just no!
It”s good that you want to help your sister but this is absolutely not the way to do so!

Sorry I meant I pay as that’s the only way to access unless diabetic or more recently multiple co- morbidities I believe x

But her feelings are the same as mine around food tho?

So why think I’m psychic and know your weight or medical history?
If she has been denied them privately then it’s for a valid reason, private companies want the money! And it won’t just make her ‘food noise’ go away, she will loose weight that she doesn’t need to loose.

Have you explored any psychological feelings around it. Google overeating anonymous videos, take the god part out, the 12 step program has saved millions of lives despite being a bit woo by exploring the addiction.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 15/08/2025 00:25

YABU, unbelievably so. If she is struggling as you say let her get a health professional to give her the medication she needs. If they say no, there is good reason.

If she is that tortured to stay slim maybe she would be happier gaining a little and managing that way. she obviously has strong will power. There's a big gap between slim and obesity and she could find an optimum balance.

Definitely dies not strive to be slimmer
loves her body
has worked bloody hard all her life and now in her 40s to stay a size 12 and athletic slim

just wants to step off the hamster wheel and have the jab take the edge off for a few months where she’s not fighting temptation every five minutes just has no appetite for a bit - like I do now x

Sticking her fist in her mouth to avoid eating is extreme, and the constant brain battle needs intervention before she loses her mind. 😥
