Dogs suddenly everywhere

AIBU to think since covid it's got a little out of control 😅 went to my local outlet centre today (MacArthur Glen) and they're now allowing all dogs into shops and restaurants. Totally get dog friendly places, you can choose not to go to them if you don't like them but feels a little wrong they're now just in shops. What if you have a fear or allergy? Or is it just me?

Agreed it is crazy how people.moan and bitch they can't afford things but yet they have Dogs!!! Which are very expensive to keep. When I was a child only 4 people in the entire estate had dogs now every tom, dick and harry has a dog.

Missed it

They said about dogs being dropped out of planes into the sea. I wont believe that there are two people on MN that think that is a good idea.

I had my dog long before the cost of living crisis hit. But she is family and she is always fed and looked after.

When you think how much people spend on other things like alcohol, football tickets, holidays etc keeping a dog isn't expensive. Lots of people go without other things because having and looking after a dog is important to them.

It's just a matter of choice and priority. People are all different.

Absolutely! I’ve had dogs for over 40 years and not one has been a problem to me or anyone else. All bar one were rescues too.
Also had 4 kids who were never harmed by the dogs; their lives were enhanced by them. Their mates loved coming round and fussing our dogs.
My dogs are not children but they are family.
I have provided a loving, happy and healthy home for my family and my dogs and loved every minute. (well, you know, apart from sleepless nights, the odd wet bed and suck bug 😂)

4 people in the entire estate.
I grew up in a poor area and everyone had a dog, no neutering, mongrel puppies were always available for free.
The Dogs were loved and fed.

Dogs are much more expensive these days, but not out of normal people reach, if my dog needed expensive veterinary care, I'd borrow from my credit union, empty my savings, no different to the washing machine or oven breaking or the DC's medical appointment.

My DC would not bat their eyelids, if we had no holiday over vet treatment.

Life has expenses. My pennies, my choice.

Well, that makes a change - a dog-moaning thread on MN!

Not to mention takeaway meals/coffees, having fake nails done.
People’s priorities can be worlds apart.

I'm generally fairly indifferent to dogs and dog owners, but I struggle to understand why anyone would take their dog to St. Ives on a scorching hot day in the middle of the holiday season. So many dogs in the narrow and very crowded streets it appeared to be almost bordering on cruelty to the creatures.

St Ives only has one very small beach that allows dogs in summer.

It's a rubbish place to take dogs, but to be honest, it's so busy these days it's a bit rubbish for humans.

You’ll never be invited round so don’t worry about it.

Same! When we had dogs, that is. I tend to avoid people who don’t like dogs anyway, so wouldn’t be inviting them round in the first place.

@RaventheBrave...what a beautiful dog you have.
Here is my little miss.

I do understand your dislike of so many dogs all over the place, OP, but my little miss is my constant companion. She has alerted me to two skin cancers, my friend's thyroid cancer, two chimney fires (!) and a boiled-dry kettle on the gas hob ; the kitchen was shimmering in the heat when she came to fetch me.
When one is old, poorly and living alone we need a reason to get up, dressed and out of the door.

JackGrealishsBobbySocks · 20/08/2025 21:28

She sounds an absolute little heroine!

I don't ban dog-dislikers from my home per se, but there is nowhere for them to sit. All the comfy chairs are occupied.

If you think about it, the "allergy" thing is a bit redundant as assistance dogs (quite rightly) have an exemption, but someone can be just as allergic to them as they can to any dog.

Yes taking either kids or dogs to Cornwall in the summer is child and pet cruelty!

It isn't though because there are so few of them. I don't see a guide dog from one year to the next.
