Torn on attending a wedding with a positive covid test

Hello All,

Just looking for advice really, I've been feeling under the weather with cold symptoms after going to a festival and I did a covid test today and its positive. My partner has done a test and is negative. We're both due to travel up country tomorrow, for a wedding on Saturday. I don't know the couple, I am meant to be meeting them for the first time during this wedding. My partner has another covid test that he'll take tomorrow.

I had my partner message the groom to let him know, and he's said for both of us to come anyways, and to just not make a big song and dance for testing positive, he's said about 90 people are going and the chances of someone else having it, irregardless of me, is quite high. My partner will still go without me, I think, but has said he'll be sad without me there, and is of the opinion that if the groom is fine with it, I should still go. But of course, there could be people in attendance who are vulnerable.

However I feel really torn, because my best friend has said she'll be really disappointed in me if I go, and that I don't know these people, so technically I won't be missing out on much - which is true. She said if I was asymptomatic that would be different, but I do have common cold symptoms, but they are manageable with cold and flu medicine.

Just seeking some advice really, if the groom had of said 'she can't come with covid' it would have been so much easier, but now I'm torn between my partner and the groom saying to come, and my best friend saying it would be the wrong thing to do. Would it be unreasonable for me to still go?

Just go. You are, frankly, an idiot for taking a Covid test because nobody cares. At all.

This is such a selfish attitude. Yes we do care. And if you are going to take a test, which is the responsible thing to do, you should abide by the outcome. Chances are you will feel shit anyway.

Thank you for this. Not sure why people are ignoring the fact that 3 million people have Long Covid in this country. And that number will just go up and up. Maybe when we get to 10 million with everyone knowing people affected then we recognise this is not just a cold.

I wish it was! I wish we could all forget about it

I read an article about a projection of LC and how it could disable the world. Or at least stop the world functioning as we know it.

HannahJ93 · 15/08/2025 13:56

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow I think I read the same article. As everyone keeps getting infected over and over eventually everyone may have some form of long covid, even those who started off incredibly healthy, due to the cumulative damage from endless infections. Society just cannot function with the majority of people having a chronic illness and it's not going to lead anywhere good unless things change. Sadly it really doesn't need to be this way. If we made it a priority as a society to make sure every public building had high quality hepa air filtration that would significantly reduce the spread of infection. We also need to normalize staying home when ill or wearing a mask if that is not possible. Also schools need to stop pushing children to go in when they are ill.

RosesAndHellebores · 15/08/2025 14:06

Bearing in mind the hysteria in these boards and assertions that people were potentially killing grannies if they went for a walk on the beach, I am astounded at this thread.

I was shouted down again and again for saying the covid response in 2020 was disproportionate. I still think it was disproportionate. However, I would not then or now, have freely mingled with covid.

How can opinions have moved so far in such a short space of time.

Wordsmithery · 15/08/2025 14:10

It's worrying how many people here think COVID isn't a thing or doesn't matter any more.
It's an infectious disease that can kill vulnerable members of our communities and turn into long COVID for healthy people. Why on earth take a disease like that to a wedding of all places? And just because to OP it's just a cold doesn't mean it'll manifest itself like that for everyone.

BuggersMuddle · 15/08/2025 14:25

At a wedding you'll presumably be in assigned seating for a significant amount of time during speeches and while having a meal.

You can choose to go and sit next to these people knowing you have symptomatic Covid. They don't get a choice.

If I was attending a wedding and I found out that the person I was essentially stuck next to had symptomatic Covid, I'd be pretty angry with both them and the groom. If I then discovered they were essentially a 'plus one' I'd be absolutely livid.

Yeah, if you hadn't tested you'd maybe have assumed it's the cold and gone. Thing is, you did test. You do know. Why would you even consider it when you've said you don't really know anyone there anyway?

Maddy70 · 15/08/2025 15:03

Im in the middle of cancer treatment. Not many know. But if I catch COVID. It prevents my treatment being able to take place and I'm at risk of being severely ill or dying .

I would really appreciate people not mingling if they know they have something like that.
There may be many people there with immunosuppression

What do you mean? You think the same posters have completely changed their attitude? I wouldn't have a clue what anyone's stance on this thread was 5 years ago, and that's not taking into account namechanging etc.

I personally believe this virus has always existed, they’ve just made a test for it now. If we all test and all stay home when infected, life won’t ever go on. It isn’t a normal way to live. I am sorry to anyone who has LC or who contracted it and was really poorly but the same could be said for flu and all sorts that existed before COVID was a thing. Some people will be affected worse than others. It’s my opinion and it’s just life. I refuse to be terrified of leaving the house if I’ve got a sniffle. It ruined my MH for a long time and I won’t let it anymore.

You believe this virus has always existed.

ok .

Yeah, I think the number itself will be irrelevant to those people & only maybe if affects someone they love very much will they actually realise the impact it can have.

I wish we could forget about it too.

If you had the flu (as opposed to a cold) you wouldn’t be physically able to leave home. You’d be in bed.

SwedishSayna · 15/08/2025 16:58

For all the PP saying it doesn't matter, how nice it must be to be so fortunate with your health that you don't give COVID a second thought. No doubt you are the type of selfish people I caught my most recent round of COVID from. Think about others not just yourself.

BondAway25 · 15/08/2025 16:59

Redcurrent100 · 15/08/2025 12:42

I’m curious to know if all the “don’t leave the house if you’ve got covid or you’re a selfish dick” also stay in multiple times a year because they get a cold because that is also viral

A drip out of a tap is water, a flood is water.

different impacts.

How can you possibly say "nobody cares about covid any more" when this thread is full of people whose lives have been upended by long covid or whose relatives are immunocompromised and who'd be at risk of severe illness?
And in many other countries, yes, covid tests are easily available and people do test--and nobody thinks it is weird. And we get our booster shots still.

Beggars belief doesn't it.

BondAway25 · 15/08/2025 17:05

Flopsythebunny · 15/08/2025 13:34

Yes they do if they have a vulnerable family member who could get really ill from it.
I have hypogammaglobulinemia so have to avoid mixing with people unless I know they are virus free.
When I went to my nephews wedding last year, he provided all guests with a covid test and asked them to use it the morning of the wedding and not attend if it was positive because as well as me there were vulnerable elderly guests attending.
I usually have to refuse invitations to such social events

Now that's a Groom you can be proud of! What a sweetheart 💕

HannahJ93 · 15/08/2025 13:41

It's not just for you though, it's for everyones benefit. Anyone, no matter their state of health, and no matter if they had covid before, can get long covid, or the various other health problems triggered by covid which are often considered separately to long covid. There are plenty of people who used to be marathon runners and professional athletes who now have long covid.

Keep trying! Maybe one day, people will listen!! 💐

SpiceDad · 15/08/2025 17:08

Why are you still taking Covid tests? You need to move on.

No, because colds are not as infectious as COVID, or as POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING.

Obviously don’t go to a wedding while testing positive for Covid. Why do you even need to ask?

I would be so angry if my baby DC or elderly DM caught it from someone doing this!

Anyoldsalad · 15/08/2025 17:57

If it were me and I felt well enough I’d go but wear a face mask and avoid kissing or hugging anyone, or talking too close to anyone vulnerable.

Plenty of research now shows face masks/ coverings significantly reduces transmission of droplets/ covid virus.

Yes! There’s no proof that it didn’t! It’s just a different strain of it IMO. I believe we were brainwashed into being terrified and it ruined many lives. Now many are still having vaccines for something I don’t think is necessary. I had two vaccinations so I’m not saying I also wasn’t initially brain washed but it’s scary what we are led to believe by the media etc when it suits.

Are you a virologist or medical doctor?
