To not like dogs

Awkward subject, but I recently was in a social group and everyone except me was bonding over their love of dogs and I just knew I had to keep quiet but of how socially unacceptable it is to dislike them.

I’m not scared of them, I haven’t had any majorly horrible experiences to make me hate dogs. I just simply don’t like them. I would never find a dog cute, I think they make your home smelly and dirty, having to walk them and look after them just seems like a form of personal torture I don’t know why anyone would want that. But I could NEVER say that thought out loud I would be crucified!

Also, another thing I’ve noticed is, it’s a certain demographic of people who seem to be obsessed with their dogs, people without kids, or older people whose kids have moved out. I may be wrong but it’s like this need to mother something/someone.

But anyway, I know dog lovers will come for me that’s fine I just genuinely want to know, why is it such a problem for dog lovers when someone else doesn’t like them?

I have kids, and when someone says they don’t want kids or don’t like them I don’t then judge them and start scrutinising them, I sort of agree lol! (Obviously love my own)

I admit I was bitten on the face by a neighbours dog as a toddler - one of my earliest memories was my sense of outrage as the horrid neighbour explained it was my own fault despite the fact I was playing in my own garden minding my own business when the dog ran in! The dog was actually put down as it had gone mad. So I didn’t get off to a great start with dogs really!

Do people really do this? I've got too many cats, love the little shits to death, but I can't remember ever having a conversation about them with anyone other than my DH and my vet.

No - clearly we all need the twice weekly reminder that dogs smell and that we only have them because we are incapable of forming human relationships 😏

I don't hate dogs, well except for the devil dogs that hurt and kill people. I just think dog ownership has got out control, people expect to take their dogs pretty much everywhere, despite the fact that other people there may have no affinity for dogs or wish to be around them. And some dog owners will say that it's the people who don't want to be around dogs that are wrong, and they are in the right, they love dogs so it's natural that everyone else should love them too. They simply cannot take a step back and see how it looks to other people.

Meanwhile, the real Una Stubbs from whom you take your username is very fond of dogs. This was one of her favourite paintings as chosen for Country Life magazine, and she said about it:

Yes indeed! It was only while looking that up that I found out she had died. Very sad, RIP to a dear lovely lady.

I love dogs but don't particularly like most people.

That quote is a perfect example of what I was saying. No it is not everyone's dream to sit reading all day with their dog on their knee. Because not everyone likes dogs. Why can't dog owners understand that?

@OonaStubbs very many dog lovers on here have said they completely understand other people not liking dogs. What we find hard to understand is the vehemence with which some people repeatedly express their dislike of dogs and their owners. Just on this thread we've been called filthy fuckers whose houses are dirty and smelly and it's been suggested that our dogs are substitutes for children. One poster made not so thinly disguised suggestions that people's pets should be drowned. There are very many threads on here in this vein.

I love my dog. I don't expect anyone else to. It seemed like Una was a dog lover too. Perhaps her pet gave her so much pleasure she could imagine that everyone else would feel the same.

I think its you that is rude, and the other 2, and very angry!! Ruby1985 is not alone in her thoughts, humans are allowed to not like dogs and some dogs DO get all up in our personal space, it happens, a lot and its very annoying.

Rabbits are awful pets. You are better off with dogs and cats.

I really think it’s a cycle in some respects - I posted upthread that I want people to stay away from my dog and while it was slightly tongue in cheek, it has some truth to it.
Try training an excitable puppy to ignore people and not jump up at them when you get complete strangers getting in their face, despite you asking them not to.
Even if you say they can say hello as long as they ask them to sit first (and you explain you’re trying to train them not to jump up) you get an “ooooh I don’t mind” and they proceed to ignore me. I know they mean well, but Christ! It’s hard to be a responsible dog owner sometimes when some people view your dog as public property.

ETA: I actually feel nothing but relief now when we walk past a person and they ignore my dog. I want to give them a high 5!
