To not like dogs

lookpar · 12/08/2025 09:09

Awkward subject, but I recently was in a social group and everyone except me was bonding over their love of dogs and I just knew I had to keep quiet but of how socially unacceptable it is to dislike them.

I’m not scared of them, I haven’t had any majorly horrible experiences to make me hate dogs. I just simply don’t like them. I would never find a dog cute, I think they make your home smelly and dirty, having to walk them and look after them just seems like a form of personal torture I don’t know why anyone would want that. But I could NEVER say that thought out loud I would be crucified!

Also, another thing I’ve noticed is, it’s a certain demographic of people who seem to be obsessed with their dogs, people without kids, or older people whose kids have moved out. I may be wrong but it’s like this need to mother something/someone.

But anyway, I know dog lovers will come for me that’s fine I just genuinely want to know, why is it such a problem for dog lovers when someone else doesn’t like them?

I have kids, and when someone says they don’t want kids or don’t like them I don’t then judge them and start scrutinising them, I sort of agree lol! (Obviously love my own)

I have less than no interest in football but don't expect people not to bond over their shared love of it when I'm around. I just let it wash over me. Suggest you learn this skill

Does your local football club practice in your local cafe though ?

Ekkekkkeekkkekk · 12/08/2025 09:52

My problem with dogs firmly lies with the owners.

Irresponsible, self centred and utterly uncaring about the impact their animal has on the local environment (shit everywhere) and people living in it (incessant barking).

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 12/08/2025 09:56

I don't particularly like cats, OP, but it's not that socially acceptable to say that either. I don't dislike animals at all, I think they are fascinating, I just seem.to find cats irritating when they groom themselves or claw the carpet etc.

To be honest I could happily leave dogs be, and ban their owners.

If you live in or near a city the chances are you are fairly regularly inconvenienced by home games from football teams. Road closures, crazy traffic, overwhelmed public transport for example.

We are not islands. If we live within a community we are all going to be impacted by other people's choices, and in turn impact on others with our own choices.

Recent events made me think we were ?

It's got to the point where we need a board called "Room 101" where people can go to start threads on the things they hate.

GleisZwei · 12/08/2025 10:02

I'm mostly fine with dogs, it's the growing subsection of incompetent owners I'm not so keen on.

Society needs children to sustain it in the long run.

Society does not need dogs.

Cool thanks. Doesn’t change my dislike of children. I’m also of the option that the world is massively overpopulated and we could do with a good few billion less humans hence why I don’t subscribe to the human Ponzi scheme.

Dog do incredible things for humans and society in general. Guide dogs, support dogs, search and rescue, on farms, drug and bomb sniffers, police and army. I’m guessing that doesn’t change your dislike of them either.

Thats fine. People like and don’t like different things.

SnowFrogJelly · 12/08/2025 10:07

Nooooo another anti dog post!! Give it a rest

caramac04 · 12/08/2025 10:09

My BF doesn’t like dogs. I have dogs. It’s not a problem. I see her without my dogs and we talk about non-dog topics.
YABU to start the thread. As I am to respond.

myplace · 12/08/2025 10:09

“may be wrong but it’s like this need to mother something/someone.”

Is this such a wrong thing? I am a nurturer. When I don’t have something to look after, I feel a bit adrift. Over the years I’ve volunteered, done hours and hours of committed community work, had jobs that involve responsibility for/looking after others in some way. I’m a facilitator, in the work environment.

I need something to go home to. When I can’t have pets I have pot plants. Always.

I also have children and a husband. I still need pot plants and pets.

Do I disapprove of people who don’t like dogs? Only if they are of the callous variety that doesn’t see them as worthy of respect as living beings. I have no time for the spider stamping, fly spraying, it’s just a dog, get rid brigade.

Season 2 Nbc GIF by The Office

You know something. You may genuinely be onto something there.

I'd have no problem in seconding you if you want to propose that in Site Stuff 😀.

I loathe cats. (Yes, don't @ me!)

'Things other people's cats do' is possibly the most tedious topic of conversation known to humankind (that and 'the dream I had last night' )

And yet.... people I love, love cats. So I tolerate their feline fables. I listen indulgently to tales of Tiddle's latest escapade because it gives those people I like pleasure, and it's not such an inconvenience to me, really. At least I don't have to own one of the mangy things.

Madam: I have owned many cats throughout my long lifetime and can assure you that none of them had mange. My current one is a rescue from being sold as dog-fighting bait. He's an excellent companion (I live with M E), makes me laugh, and seems to know when I'm feeling particularly unwell. He's an indoor cat, so doesn't murder the wildlife. If I have visitors who, for whatever reason, don't like cats, he goes into another room.
He's fully insured, vaccinated, has vet. provided flea and worm medication and has interim health and wellbeing checks with the vet nurse team.
I rest my case.

overthinker001 · 12/08/2025 10:29

I really don’t like them either op. I got told they are really good for mental health but when we had one it made my mental health 10x worse, it’s just personal preference though I think

Jackiepumpkinhead · 12/08/2025 10:33

I don’t like children, and can see zero benefit of having them. But, I absolutely respect people’s choice to have them. You should probably do the same.

Lauren1983 · 12/08/2025 10:36

I think it is really just an online thing that makes you feel wrong for not liking dogs. I often see posters on here saying they don't trust people who don't like dogs and it can be treated as though you have some sort of moral failing. In real life people aren't as bothered.

This! What’s wrong with nurturing a dog, cat, lizard, whatever. I don’t have children (never wanted them) and think it’s incredibly important, for me anyway, to have some caring responsibility in life. I love looking after my dog, enriching her life, as she does mine. We go for the most amazing walks in any weather, agility classes, swimming etc. I couldn’t imagine not having a dog in my life, it would feel a bit empty.

Spidey66 · 12/08/2025 10:40

Another dog hating thread. How many is that now?

And yes you're unreasonable. Dogs are great. Far better than people.

Branster · 12/08/2025 10:44

I never heard that not liking dogs is socially unacceptable, so this is a wrong perception of reality.
I don't like drinking, I don't like alcohol, I think people are being silly to consume so much alcohol. It doesn't stop me meeting with my friends, they all drink and know I don't like alcohol and it has zero negative impact on our friendship or enjoyment of spending time together. Obviously I'd never tell anyone I thought they are silly for drinking too much alcohol because that would be a stupid thing to do and I wouldn't want to spoil their enjoyment especially as they are adults and more than capable of making their own decisions.
Why do you feel ostracised? They like dogs, you don't. It's not a reason to feel completely left out.
I would say though that a lot of people are too obsessed with their dogs. But so are other people constantly going on about their wedding/ husband/ children/ latest holiday/ work problems / whatever. This is life.

kim204 · 12/08/2025 11:03

Just say you're not a dog person. I don't think it's a big deal.

ArcticBells · 12/08/2025 11:14

I don’t like dogs. I like cats. End of.

gannett · 12/08/2025 11:17

Love dogs. Love saying hello to all the good boys and good girls when I'm out and about. I saw a golden with the BIGGEST STICK EVER on my run yesterday and it looked so proud of itself.

Hoping this thread goes the way many anti-dog threads have done before - pictures of MNers dogs please!

amber763 · 12/08/2025 11:21

Why do you think people care whether you like or dislike dogs? People like different things. I dislike miserable people who feel put out by something they dislike bringing other folk happiness.

Maddy70 · 12/08/2025 11:21

Noone cares if you like dogs or not ... It's ok to say you don't like them , but honestly no-one cares if their pets being them pleasure then who are you to judge? No-one is making you own a dog
