To not like dogs

Awkward subject, but I recently was in a social group and everyone except me was bonding over their love of dogs and I just knew I had to keep quiet but of how socially unacceptable it is to dislike them.

I’m not scared of them, I haven’t had any majorly horrible experiences to make me hate dogs. I just simply don’t like them. I would never find a dog cute, I think they make your home smelly and dirty, having to walk them and look after them just seems like a form of personal torture I don’t know why anyone would want that. But I could NEVER say that thought out loud I would be crucified!

Also, another thing I’ve noticed is, it’s a certain demographic of people who seem to be obsessed with their dogs, people without kids, or older people whose kids have moved out. I may be wrong but it’s like this need to mother something/someone.

But anyway, I know dog lovers will come for me that’s fine I just genuinely want to know, why is it such a problem for dog lovers when someone else doesn’t like them?

I have kids, and when someone says they don’t want kids or don’t like them I don’t then judge them and start scrutinising them, I sort of agree lol! (Obviously love my own)

Same Bluey. I have absolutely nothing to add to any dog chat and feel exactly as you do. I dont dislike dogs but they hold zero appeal or interest to me.

I would hate to have a dog myself as I am craving nor being responsible for anything as my teens get more independent just can’t imagine voluntarily opting to have something else to look after <shudder>

True. My sister's dog sniffed out her breast cancer although she didn't know that's what he was doing at the time and thought he was just being annoying.

All these people banging on about how much they dislike talking about dogs.

Read the full thread and others that have come before - which you yourself have participated in. Some of them have had posts removed for threatening to kill dogs. Do you think this is acceptable or normal?

And I can guarantee that your friends are well aware of your feelings about their dogs. We can always tell when people aren't comfortable around our dogs. We have no issue with that, we never allow them to harass anybody. We are very respectful of peoples preferences. Not everyone likes dogs but that's fine.

Meh. I couldn’t care less if someone doesn’t like dogs. We are all different and it’s not a struggle for me to understand that people like different things. I think ops armchair analysis of the “demographics” of people who own dogs is a bit odd, but whatever.
Personally I love and adore dogs, never met one I don’t like. But then mine aren’t barking in cafes or crapping in public or “sniffing” random strangers, although to be fair, if you walk past a dog on a pavement and it sniffs you? I don’t know how you prevent that?

Where have I ever said I want to kill dogs?! Are you mad? I feel perfectly benign towards them. You are another example of the thin skinned neuroticism displayed by some dog owners.

It's not insane to notice the same names on repeated dog hate threads.

I really don’t have an agenda! Just find it deeply weird and unsettling that people remember a users name and their views on a pretty pointless topic.

Well if that's the case I genuinely apologise, I didn't mean for it to be weird or unsettling. But I do remember names from many threads on different subjects, so I just assumed everyone else did. I didn't realise it was strange, it seems pretty normal to me.

Im not keen on most humans so I tend to try and walk my dog at random times or in remote places so we don’t meet anyone else. Yet when we do, they nearly always bloody come over to us and get in my dogs face and make him all excitable and jumpy even if I ask them not to. It’s very annoying,

FWIW, I recognise people on book threads and style & beauty also. I suspect wordy, bookish people do register names quite easily.

Not all dogs bark or jump up but I do understand what you mean. Even dog owners can be disgusted by the behaviour of other people's dogs, it would be lying to claim otherwise. Some just don't set a good example.

I don't really like dogs - I am not offended by them and can appreciate a cute one but never in a million years would I have one.

Lots of my friends have them - they know my feelings on them, we still manage to be friends 🤷🏼‍♀️

Unless you are literally going "your house stinks cos of your dog" I fail to see how having a different opinion to a friend (or anyone!) about a pet is even remotely a problem?

If we were all the same, life would be pretty boring!.
From my experience, I would say most people who don’t like dogs have never experienced living with one, or having contact with one for any length of time.
I love the saying that “ dogs are born loving and are here to teach humans to love”.
Dogs don’t judge, don’t hold a grudge and will love you no matter what, dogs bring comfort and joy, they know when you are happy or sad, their one aim in life is to give their unconditional love, all they expect in return is love, food and water.

I do effortlessly remember the names of dog haters, racists and people who post xenophobic nonsense about a country I have cultural ties to. It isn't intentional (like making a blacklist, or jotting down targets for when I am Queen of the Universe making purges), just how people's brain works.

If you're afraid of dogs through childhood trauma, or because you were raised by dog-fearful parents, it's genuinely sad and don't worry, my dog isn't coming anywhere near you. My good dog never jumps up, unless you have a squirrel perched atop of you. And you're a tree.

The weird and unsettling comment bothered me, as an anxious person, so I asked for deletion of my pup photo from the thread. She's my MH support and this is why I get invested in these threads, but I almost always end up regretting it.

I have family members who are genuinely fearful of dogs so I'm always mindful of that also. I don't expect everyone to love my dog.

Definitely try not to take them to heart. Some people just love to spread misery and bitterness. Your dog is gorgeous, a truly noble breed too. As I said, my dog has a friend like that and the only "risk" is too many kisses and your clothes might need a hoover if you cuddle him (totally worth it!).
