Remember Jean and John that used my DM's house? Update

For anyone that remembers the previous thread
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5315647-cfs-have-been-using-my-mums-house-as-a-hotel?page=1

I have an update now the police investigation is over. The police charged "John" with trespass, criminal damage and breaking and entering. He got 14 months in prison. We still don't know the full story, but we do now know (as some of you suspected) that was letting my DM's house on a well known website.. (ABNB) 🙄 the "relatives" were some of his tenants. Complete CF 😡

We never saw Jean (his wife) again after he was arrested. I believe (from Anne - who's since become a good friend) that she's moved out of her property and is planning to sell it.

The best news - after we sorted out the damage caused by John, my DM's house went back on the market and we accepted an offer a month later. It should hopefully be completing sometime in September if everything goes to plan 🤞🤞

Thanks for all your messages and support on the previous thread. It really helped! 🙂

CF's have been using my mums house as a hotel!! | Mumsnet

My dm died last year. Her house is currently empty and we're in the process of selling it (on the market but no buyer yet). The house next door is own...

This has not been reported on any news sites in the UK, as far as I can see. If anyone can find a news report I'd love to see it.

Whether something gets reported in local news is entirely dependent on whether a reporter happens to be in court at the relevant time, and whether s/he is awake. They could have missed a guilty plea just by going out for a smoke, or if there was something more interesting going on in one of the other courts.

So pleased to hear that it has been settled and he got his comeuppance!!

This reminds me of the character Patrick Nice in The Fast Show who would tell an outlandish obviously made up story and end with the catchphrase "which was nice"

Itiswhysofew · 11/08/2025 20:10

Imagine that happening in your own life. You just couldn't make it up. So many CFs in this world. What an absolute cheek!

Confusedmeanderings · 11/08/2025 20:17

Thanks for coming back and updating!

Stichintime · 11/08/2025 21:16

I wish she had!

Oh, I think some could.

For the many saying this is not real - instead of troll hunting, report the thread, like you’re supposed to! 🙄

What makes you so sure they haven’t? 🙄

Whattodo1610 · 12/08/2025 16:33

Because there’s so many complaining, one after the other. MN states no troll hunting, so instead of saying “oh this can’t be real” etc, just say nothing but report the thread! Probably none of them have read the previous thread. IF they have complained, the fact the thread is still running shows mn believe it to be genuine .. so why still keep troll hunting?!

mumda · 12/08/2025 16:36

Glad you're nearly at the end of this now. The house completion will be a relief for you.

Orangeoranges42 · 12/08/2025 17:33

Wow. Thank you so much for updating! What a crazy situation.

sorry if I missed it, was the house from you dm in a good condition when she died or had he done work to the house too? Mind blowing!!

so pleased had a good ending.

250mlmax · 15/08/2025 12:27

Notwithstanding that the original thread was so bananas you’d be forgiven for being sceptical; as pp have pointed out, magistrates have sentencing powers up to 12 months. However, if a defendant pleads guilty then it can be dealt with quickly because you don’t need to schedule a trial. Mags can send either way offences to crown court for sentencing if the sentence is between 12-24 mths. The process is pretty fast. Sentencing hearings generally only take half an hour whereas e/w offence trials can take up to a day.

250mlmax · 15/08/2025 12:31

Gymnopediegivesmethewillies · 11/08/2025 14:36

Not sure how to link but was a serving JP for over 10 years. The Mags Court wouldn’t be sentencing for more than 12 months but they could activate an already existing suspended sentence or recall to prison if on licence. Then sentence for up to 12 months to run consecutive to the above for the new offences. That’s how you can reach over 12 months in a Mags’ Court. Sorry if I was unclear.

Edited

At the moment mags are being encouraged to retain jurisdiction for as many e/w offences as possible because of the backlog in CC. So even if the sentence is likely to exceed mags’ sentencing powers, they can retain and send up for sentencing one hearings are complete.

I did cover that in a later post but thank you ☺️

JohnofWessex · 15/08/2025 14:23

has he been hit with a 'Proceeds of Crime Act' order or have HMRC been informed?

Pleased this all got sorted so so satisfactorily. Amazing that "John" got charged and sentenced so quickly (4 months from offence?) I've never heard of the process all happening so fast, but pleased for you that it did. Well done OP.

Yes, UNBELIEVABLY fast. 🙄

Have you not read the explanations up thread ?

JohnofWessex · 16/08/2025 14:50

I heard of a case in the 50's where a man was arrested, up in front of the magistrates and jailed by the end of the day!
