Remember Jean and John that used my DM's house? Update

For anyone that remembers the previous thread
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5315647-cfs-have-been-using-my-mums-house-as-a-hotel?page=1

I have an update now the police investigation is over. The police charged "John" with trespass, criminal damage and breaking and entering. He got 14 months in prison. We still don't know the full story, but we do now know (as some of you suspected) that was letting my DM's house on a well known website.. (ABNB) 🙄 the "relatives" were some of his tenants. Complete CF 😡

We never saw Jean (his wife) again after he was arrested. I believe (from Anne - who's since become a good friend) that she's moved out of her property and is planning to sell it.

The best news - after we sorted out the damage caused by John, my DM's house went back on the market and we accepted an offer a month later. It should hopefully be completing sometime in September if everything goes to plan 🤞🤞

Thanks for all your messages and support on the previous thread. It really helped! 🙂

CF's have been using my mums house as a hotel!! | Mumsnet

My dm died last year. Her house is currently empty and we're in the process of selling it (on the market but no buyer yet). The house next door is own...

Weird. My ex was arrested for harming one of my children in June (offence was in May but police seem to move slowly). Not expecting a decision about charging until the end of aug/start of Sept. If he’s charged then it’ll go to court for pleas/sentencing. Nothing quick about it, and this is harm to a child. So it’s perplexing to read how quickly this one got resolved..?

AnyoneWhoHasAHeart · 11/08/2025 14:07

If you type into google “what is the maximum sentence a magistrate can give” right at the top:

*In the UK, a magistrate's court can impose a maximum prison sentence of 6 months for a single summary offence and 12 months for two or more either-way offences. For a single either-way offence, the maximum was previously 12 months but reverted to 6 months on March 30, 2023. Magistrates can also impose other penalties, including fines, community orders, and bans.

Happy holidays everyone.

Crazy

SomeoneSomewheree · 11/08/2025 14:08

Why would the OP make up such an elaborate lie?

Isittimeformynapyet · 11/08/2025 14:08

Beachtastic · 11/08/2025 14:05

Same. But I don't care, I love the story 🌞

I'm probably just eager to relive recent thread excitement! 😞 shameface.

Did you see our weekend has been deleted? I can't say I'm surprised.

MaidOfSteel · 11/08/2025 14:08

Thank you so much for updating us! It’s good to hear things have turned out well. Sending best wishes for the future.

Typicalwave · 11/08/2025 14:11

Omg i remember your post.

Unbelievable

SomeoneSomewheree · 11/08/2025 14:08

Why would the OP make up such an elaborate lie?

People make up the deaths of children on here.

She got a 25 page thread out of it.

Sometimes people do it for attention, sometimes for the thrill, sometimes (like in the case of made up dead children) because they’re sick fuckers.

A thread like the first one is fairly tame, it gets some attention and is just a little story for people to comment on. No harm done really.

But sometimes a poster will create a story and then get carried away and get something obvious wrong which then outs them.

I too have previously wondered what happened, so thanks for the update. What a lot of horrible stress for you. So glad you are on the other side of it now, but wow!

HelloHattie · 11/08/2025 14:15

14 months!!

Yes, I wonder what the trigger factor was - possibly phishing scam? Or complaints?

Rosscameasdoody · 11/08/2025 14:19

CharlotteLightandDark · 11/08/2025 13:08

Oh shit! Did you have to declare the altercation with the neighbours to the new buyers as there was police involvement? I guess if he’s in prison he won’t bother them too much at least

Hopefully it wouldn’t qualify as a neighbour dispute in the traditional sense because OP doesn’t live in the house, so not strictly between neighbours - and the neighbours were actually breaking the law.

Iloveacurry · 11/08/2025 14:22

Thanks for the update! Wow. And great news about the house sale.

ninjahamster · 11/08/2025 14:23

Goodness. You must be very relieved it is all over.

Bananafofana · 11/08/2025 14:24

Wow that’s one chunky jail term. CPS must have had a field day itemising all the different offences and I wonder if he had prior convictions…. What a satisfying update!

BitOutOfPractice · 11/08/2025 14:24

Blimey! That’s CFery on an epic scale!

Im so sorry you went through that and bravo to the police for acting!

Good luck with the sale going through.

My son testified against someone in court in February; they were sentenced in June.

Yep, same here. Friend testifying in court a few months ago, defendant now in prison. I’d imagine if he had a history of this type of behaviour, he’d have been dealt with more swiftly and possibly in crown court. Kicking in the door of a property you don’t own and then destroying property because you’ve been found out in criminal behaviour certainly suggests an anger issue.

KhakiOrca · 11/08/2025 14:29

I remember your thread.
Thanks for the update. Glad it all worked out well in the end and john got what he deserved!

ThejoyofNC · 11/08/2025 14:30

Wow thanks for coming back to update OP.

I'm pretty shocked that the British justice system actually seems to have served justice for a change!!

DurinsBane · 11/08/2025 14:30

IMissSparkling · 11/08/2025 13:11

So you discovered this four months ago and he's already in jail? The justice system must be extremely efficient where you live.

And also for trespassing as part of his convictions, which is funny as trespass is a civil offence, not a crime in this country.
Unless the OP lives in another country where they have swift justice!

ElectoralControversy · 11/08/2025 14:31

spoonbillstretford · 11/08/2025 14:01

Do you imagine every small scale crime is reported on news sites?

DD and I love a bit of trivial local crime in the paper

The shoplifting of completely random times is the best but all sorts gets reported:

www.gazetteandherald.co.uk/news/25329478.devizes-noisy-neighbours-home-raided-complaints/

TheCurious0range · 11/08/2025 14:31

Hmmm there are elements of this that definitely don't match what I see daily within the CJ system. Mags can only sentence to 12 months. It's possible he was on licence recalled for these new offences had some time left to serve on the previous, then they've added time for this to run consecutively, he would've had to plead guilty for it to be sentenced this quickly even at Mags. Unless the OPs original timeline was off and it had been going on much longer but she couldn't say that because of ongoing police matters so changed some details.
There's also a huge drive currently not to hand down custodial sentences other than for violent/sexual offending. The extension to HDC eligibility means people on short sentences are being released very quickly

Which would normally result in medical reports etc and slow the entire thing right down.

ChocolateBiscuitsandaCuppa · 11/08/2025 14:32

The waiting can't have been easy, let alone the extra stress on top of selling. Am so glad there was a positive outcome. Yay (a thousand times) for Anne.
