Remember Jean and John that used my DM's house? Update

For anyone that remembers the previous thread
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5315647-cfs-have-been-using-my-mums-house-as-a-hotel?page=1

I have an update now the police investigation is over. The police charged "John" with trespass, criminal damage and breaking and entering. He got 14 months in prison. We still don't know the full story, but we do now know (as some of you suspected) that was letting my DM's house on a well known website.. (ABNB) 🙄 the "relatives" were some of his tenants. Complete CF 😡

We never saw Jean (his wife) again after he was arrested. I believe (from Anne - who's since become a good friend) that she's moved out of her property and is planning to sell it.

The best news - after we sorted out the damage caused by John, my DM's house went back on the market and we accepted an offer a month later. It should hopefully be completing sometime in September if everything goes to plan 🤞🤞

Thanks for all your messages and support on the previous thread. It really helped! 🙂

CF's have been using my mums house as a hotel!! | Mumsnet

My dm died last year. Her house is currently empty and we're in the process of selling it (on the market but no buyer yet). The house next door is own...

OP I have often wondered how things turned out for you. Thank you for coming back to update us. So sorry that you had to experience such an awful time after losing your Mum. Flowers

This would have been in Crown Court not Magistrates for that sentence and the average time from charges to outcome is about a year at the moment. So 4 months from arrest was extremely efficient.

That's what I suspected. I think the Google result I posted would be the absolute best case scenario. I was looking to corroborate OP's account, but found it difficult.

If John pled guilty it's quite possible.

People seem to get hung up on the length of time it takes to go to trial, which is dreadful but would not have been the case if there was a guilty plea

A magistrate can't hand out a 14 month sentence though.

And I seriously doubt it went to crown court that quickly.

AnyoneWhoHasAHeart · 11/08/2025 13:55

Ok.

Can you please link us to the case/ local paper about it @CustardCreamsfortea ?
Fascinating!

The last one I can find that's even remotely similar is from 2016. Would love OP to come back with links.

It is possible to get up to 18m in a Mags court, especially if activating a former suspension or recall to prison. Also if John had pleaded guilty it would have been a sentencing hearing not a trial so could have moved reasonably quickly.

Could you link please?

I genuinely can't find anything that says they're allowed to sentence to anything over 12 months?

Stichintime · 11/08/2025 13:57

This has not been reported on any news sites in the UK, as far as I can see. If anyone can find a news report I'd love to see it.

Hi OP, great result for you.

Well it's been an hour now.

I wonder if the OP is coming back to answer a few points raised.

Oh my gosh, I always thought it was a massive overreaction to his cfery but never for one second thought it was anything other than the relatives they originally claimed

You thought the OP and posters were overreacting? Did you not read the bit on the previous thread where John kicked the door down and caused damage to the property?

Francestein · 11/08/2025 14:00

Thanks for reporting back! You’ve had a hell of a time and nobody ever needs to encounter this kind of behaviour. So pleased they’ve been charged.

Stichintime · 11/08/2025 14:01

I think, with a few additional twists and turns, this could be a great channel 5 'documentary'.

Do you imagine every small scale crime is reported on news sites?

Stichintime · 11/08/2025 14:01

Im surprised no journalist has picked up the story so far.

12 months is the max for 1 offence... can they add more if there's more than 1 offence ?

(Not wanting to think this is a made up one)

Stichintime · 11/08/2025 14:03

spoonbillstretford, I think this is just the sort of thing reported in the local news.

It would be easier if OP came back to clarify some things.

According to Google they can't.

Virtually every local paper in the land has a court reporter. Our local reports at the level of Fred Brown, Smith Street being convicted of possession of a small amount of Cat A drugs whilst doing 70 in a 60 zone.

A neighbour letting out their neighbour’s home on Air BNB and causing so much criminal damage they get a 14 month custodial sentence would have been utter catnip for the 23yo journo desperate to make their mark.

Sure, but the lack of reporting doesn't necessarily = made up, on its own.
