Remember Jean and John that used my DM's house? Update

For anyone that remembers the previous thread
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5315647-cfs-have-been-using-my-mums-house-as-a-hotel?page=1

I have an update now the police investigation is over. The police charged "John" with trespass, criminal damage and breaking and entering. He got 14 months in prison. We still don't know the full story, but we do now know (as some of you suspected) that was letting my DM's house on a well known website.. (ABNB) 🙄 the "relatives" were some of his tenants. Complete CF 😡

We never saw Jean (his wife) again after he was arrested. I believe (from Anne - who's since become a good friend) that she's moved out of her property and is planning to sell it.

The best news - after we sorted out the damage caused by John, my DM's house went back on the market and we accepted an offer a month later. It should hopefully be completing sometime in September if everything goes to plan 🤞🤞

Thanks for all your messages and support on the previous thread. It really helped! 🙂

CF's have been using my mums house as a hotel!! | Mumsnet

My dm died last year. Her house is currently empty and we're in the process of selling it (on the market but no buyer yet). The house next door is own...

Oh wow! I have often thought of you. Am so sorry you went through all of that, but glad you got closure. What a shit Jean was. Glad he got jail time, his response was unhinged.

Thanks for updating us!

CatKings · 11/08/2025 13:02

Wow thank you for updating, such a crazy story. People really are CFs.

Billybagpuss · 11/08/2025 13:03

Oh my gosh, I always thought it was a massive overreaction to his cfery but never for one second thought it was anything other than the relatives they originally claimed

ChessieFL · 11/08/2025 13:03

Thank you for updating, I did wonder what the final outcome was! Glad it all got sorted eventually.

TidyDancer · 11/08/2025 13:04

Oh I remember this! Insane that it happened at all! Glad to hear of a positive outcome for you!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 11/08/2025 13:07

The ultimate CF story!

Glad it's worked out for you.

GirlsInGreen · 11/08/2025 13:08

Blimey!🫨 I remember you well. My god we've heard of some CF here, bit your tale tops everything. So glad the police took it seriously.

Well done.

You thought OP was overreacting?? Really? Or am I reading your comment wrong?

CharlotteLightandDark · 11/08/2025 13:08

Oh shit! Did you have to declare the altercation with the neighbours to the new buyers as there was police involvement? I guess if he’s in prison he won’t bother them too much at least

WingingIt101 · 11/08/2025 13:10

Pleased it is all resolved now! And glad he got jail time!

SparklyGlitterballs · 11/08/2025 13:10

Pleased this all got sorted so so satisfactorily. Amazing that "John" got charged and sentenced so quickly (4 months from offence?) I've never heard of the process all happening so fast, but pleased for you that it did. Well done OP.

applegingermint · 11/08/2025 13:10

There is absolutely no way that a custodial sentence of 14 months has been handed down between a crime occurring in April this year and now.

Sorry, but you’ll need to elaborate as this is currently extremely outside the bounds of possibility in the UK.

No cf was overreacting by kicking the door in etc

IMissSparkling · 11/08/2025 13:11

So you discovered this four months ago and he's already in jail? The justice system must be extremely efficient where you live.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 11/08/2025 13:11

Thank you so much for returning and letting us know the outcome.

Now that he has been convicted, is there any way you can claim compensation for the damage he caused, and is there anyway you can get the money he made in rent ?

Ooh right haha, so I was reading your comment wrong 😆 apologies. Thanks for clarifying!

He was arrested in April this year and it's already gone to court and he's been sent to prison??

Stichintime · 11/08/2025 13:14

Hmm...

It also seems disproportionately long, he could have beaten up his wife and got way less time.

I suppose if he was already on probation or had a suspended sentence from something else? His reaction to the locks being changed shows that we're not dealing with your average person here

And 14 months??

Mindblowing.

Some people don't get that for assault.

Llamasarellovely · 11/08/2025 13:19

Gosh, and they're listing trials into 2029 elsewhere in the country, so it's nice to know justice moves quickly on occasion.

AdoraBell · 11/08/2025 13:19

Glad you got it sorted 👍

Beachtastic · 11/08/2025 13:19

What a fabulous happy ending, congratulations OP!

Any idea what on earth got into "John"?! Obviously a complete nut job.
