Mortified by DH’s behaviour in Asda

EllyRoff · 09/08/2025 09:01

Went to Asda yesterday afternoon - ours has a pharmacist in there and DH needed some Laxido so we went across. The woman serving said they didn’t have laxido but they did have movicol which is the same thing with a different name. DH asked her if the ingredients is exactly the same as he has to be very careful with what he takes (true) so she went off to check with the pharmacist. Whilst she was gone DH was looking around him all anxiously and then as she reemerged she walked over to him smiling - he promptly sticks two fingers up at her and then runs off!!! Leaving me stood there like an absolute clown. I was mortified, apologised profoundly to her and walked away. Later caught up with DH who had simply gone back to shopping in Asda as if nothing had happened. His excuse was that he was scared to take something different but was feeling pressured and didn’t know what to do so legged it. I asked why on earth he swore at her and he said he “just panicked”. I’m still furious, my mum thinks I’m over-reacting a bit but DH can do no wrong in her eyes. Am I over-reacting??!

This is so weird. Does he often behave like a 12 year old ? If my dh did this i would think he was having a mini breakdown .

As the mother of a 12yo, I find this very insulting 😂
I don't know any 12 year olds who would behave like this

fthisfthatfeverything · 09/08/2025 15:40

Sorry OP
this made me laugh 😆

did she trigger his fight or flight?

Auntiebenita · 09/08/2025 15:44

He sounds like a yobbish teenager. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t ever show this immature, idiotic sort of behaviour in other areas of his life.

He'd have to be absolutely wonderful in every other way to even begin to counterbalance such rudeness as far as I’m concerned.

MarxistMags · 09/08/2025 15:47

I can't stop laughing about this. I'd have loved to have seen the shop assistant's face .....
Every time he speaks to you today give him the V sign or say Willie, Willie, Willie 😅 😅 😅
(Hope you've read that thread otherwise that will make no sense) I can't stop laughing even now.

PeriJane · 09/08/2025 15:49

Oh for gods sake. He wasn’t having a panic attack. He’s not mentally ill. He doesn’t have a learning disability. He is simply a dickhead who likes to try and find ways to excuse his dickish behaviour rather than just admit he’s a dickhead.

listen I’m not condoning what hubs did to the cashier, it’s bizarre- but are you telling me that this isn’t one of those stories you tell, when relaying embarrassing incidents over a few drinks with friends that will have you both laughing and cringing .. ?

No. I do have stories that mortified me at the time but I can laugh at now but none of them involved deriding or belittling another person or doing something that might have upset them.

Oddsocksanduglyshoes · 09/08/2025 09:03

I would refuse to go out in public with him again. Does he have Tourette’s? Maybe he should be assessed.

I have tourettes and blaming being an idiot on a serious medical condition is disgusting.

Not even unintentionally while panicking? Isn’t that more a matter of luck than superiority?

You clearly don't know anything about UTI's do you then???

My nan went to my neighbours at midnight, in her nightie, to ask for a ladder so she could climb up on her roof. She was convinced that my mum and aunty (both in their 70's) were swinging around the aerial! And yes- nan had a UTI!

My mum did some nutty stuff as well when she had a UTI. Untreated they can be pretty serious.

Good point .
I more meant I could accept it if he was a 12 year old. Thinking it will funny and not really that bad. You could laugh about it and apologise.
But not a grown man with constipation shopping with his wife ...just odd

YourUglySister · 09/08/2025 15:58

That’s disgusting behaviour. The pharmacist does not deserve to be abused in her place of work especially as she was trying to help him. I’d imagine they will refuse to serve him again. As it’s in an Asda he will be on CCTV and they may even report him.

Plastictreees · 09/08/2025 15:59

I think most people have missed the OP’s update which says her husband has a UTI, which could explain his odd behaviour. Especially if it’s out of character. If that’s the case then I wouldn’t be calling him disparaging names, as UTI’s can cause disinhibition which could happen to anyone.

The posters saying how ‘funny’ it is to swear at staff I have a few choice names for however…

It was a genuine question. Having a relative with a recent diagnosis of Tourette’s I was genuinely wondering if he could be developing a tic as this was such strange behaviour.

No, it’s just not something I’d find funny. Twice in the past I’ve had random (male) strangers be very rude to me and if they and their wives had a good laugh about it later I’d think they were morons.

You say at the end he swore, you don’t mention that in the beginning of your story!

LDNloveandlife · 09/08/2025 16:08

I’d be mortified too. What bizarre behaviour.

CurtainSunrise · 09/08/2025 16:11

How old is the husband? I’m not sure he is in the age group for a UTI to affect his behaviour so drastically. And it sounds like he went back to ‘normal’ afterwards. It does not sound like the behaviour of an older person with dementia at all to me.

ASimpleLampoon · 09/08/2025 16:13

Oddsocksanduglyshoes · 09/08/2025 09:03

M DS has Tourettes, and this is exactly something he would do.

It would happen if he's feeling under pressure.

Medical term copropraxia.

Doesn't necessarily mean TS but needs to be ruled out at least if he can't really explain why he did it.

crumblingschools · 09/08/2025 16:14

@CurtainSunrise I was going to say the same thing. I thought UTI irrational behaviour is more likely in elderly as can be mixed up with dementia or impacted by dementia

Not sure they would be using rude hand signals, running off and then carrying on shopping as normal

nameobsessed · 09/08/2025 16:15

I’m not even joking that’s the most pathetic, embarrassing and strange thing I’ve ever read. He wouldn’t be coming home with me as I’m not a carer and that’s clearly what he needs.

Plastictreees · 09/08/2025 16:17

@crumblingschools Yes UTI’s can affect behaviour in younger people, although it’s rarer. I’ve known them to cause agitation and aggression.

Of course no one can diagnose over the internet though and I doubt the OP will be back to update, given how much this thread has been de-railed!

youalright · 09/08/2025 16:24

Its just really odd like embarrassing odd did everyone look as he was running through them. I work in retail and I think id be more shocked and confused then offended because its just not something adults do and I would assume that you where his carer rather then his wife.

MarxistMags · 09/08/2025 16:29

Stop it, I'm alone in the house just now and I'm laughing out loud and sniggering....
And just to point out IMO it wasn't swearing .

LittlleMy · 09/08/2025 16:42

Seems v much like a UTI induced altered mental state compounded by DH anxiety about whether his usual medicine was there or not. Especially as OP said prior to incident DH was acting v anxiously and afterwards went back to normal and carried on with the grocery shop.

I asked that question, apparently putting two fingers up is swearing. I guess it is but I call it a gesture.
