I anticipate it and I'm saving up but that will be ofc no use if the financial system collapses

Should probably do something else

OP posts:
ManchesterLu · 07/08/2025 20:35

I am kind of anticipating it, as things just keep getting more and more expensive and wages aren't rising to meet the changes.

I find myself not even caring anymore.. which is worse than being worried about it.

PermanentTemporary · 07/08/2025 20:35

No. I’m trying to stay reasonably healthy, employed/employable, connected to my friends and community, and am trying to learn to grow more things (quite successful this year - I grew beans from seed and will now have homegrown seed for next year). Beyond that, worrying about lots of what-ifs seems a bit pointless.

MidnightPatrol · 07/08/2025 20:36

On what grounds are you assuming this eventuality?

outerspacepotato · 07/08/2025 20:37

I have lots of mustard seed so my spiral into the void will at least be spicy.

I'm 55 and work in a stressful job involving a lot of shiftwork.. I save a lot of money every month but it seems a drop in the ocean. I'm planning to leave my job in around 10 months and do something less taxing. I don't know what the future holds in regard to my standard of living but I expect it won't include regular holidays or Tuscan villa. However, I feel family and friends will make my quality of life....and of course, health.

Ok well now I want to be your best friend 🤣🤣🤣

Fragmentedbrain · 07/08/2025 21:09

Mustard seems sensible but just hope you can get clean water to germinate it

I have a lot of random bottles of slightly drunk gins maybe this should be my plan

Hold on to those OP and look around for anyone with too many damsons (it been a bountiful year for them). Shove them in a huge bottle with all your gin and wait for a delicious liqueur to develop.

Something nice to look forward to.

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 07/08/2025 21:36

I'm not doing anything differently, as I'm just exhausted by it all at this point. For me it's already going downhill and I can't afford now what I could afford on half my salary 15 years ago. I work harder now than ever and have much less to show for it. I don't think I'm the only one.

It's just a shame that we didn't know how good we had it at the time. I would have tried to appreciate holidays and days out more, instead of getting hung up on the little things.

Yes, it means you can put the oblivion off for a few more months. Always a good thing.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 07/08/2025 21:39

No

waitingforpost · 07/08/2025 22:20

Well it's been happening for years & costs & taxes are only going to keep going one way.

That’s all you need really. The rest is just gloss.

Our entire social system is broken. The social contract is broken, capitalism is going to collapse under the weight of its own internal contradictions and we face ecological disaster. All the while the super rich are worrying about how to hold on to everything they have, in a world of their own making in which anything they have will eventually be useless to them.

Me, just getting on with it like most people.

It was ever thus.

I have an admin job and I'm worried about AI. I can't just retrain as something practical such as an electrician or a phlebotomist - I haven't got the dexterity for it. I'm not sure what to do, or study...

Lyocell · 07/08/2025 22:36

I do think the country can’t afford to keep going as it is. I work in healthcare, and the amount of people who need support in various ways is just not sustainable. That’s not a political comment. It’s not right wing ramblings, I’m not saying it’s right or wrong or ethical or moral or whatever. I’m just saying when you actually see day to day the volume of people that require state support in one way or another, it’s just not affordable anymore.

HelenaWaiting · 07/08/2025 22:38

I've stockpiled wine.

You need a job where you physically need to be at the job to perform the job and then you can’t be replaced

I absolutely agree. Plus the number of people who desperately want to work and support themselves and others but increasingly can't find work.

I suppose you need to try to predict what will be valuable to barter with in the post-apocalyptic Mad Max style anarchy that follows.

Fuel maybe? Have you considered buying an oil well? Failing that, getting a petrol station franchise?

Good thinking. If the balloon goes up I think I need two bottles a day per person

I do think we are all too consumption focussed. Im trying to raise my children to enjoy more simple/cheap activities, time outdoors, gardening, board games, reading. Im also trying to make sure they appreciate simple home cooked food and don't always expect expensive holidays, but enjoy a uk camping trip as well
