I anticipate it and I'm saving up but that will be ofc no use if the financial system collapses

Should probably do something else

I’m 35 and work in mental health. It’s so emotionally and mentally taxing and not well paid. I still have a long way to go before retirement but I’m trying to balance enjoying my life while saving a bit for the future. Am also considering retraining in something else. I think it’s about balance as the future isn’t 100% certain and anything can happen.

Turning 50 this year. Divorced with a mortgage that runs until I'm 67 and went up by £130 a month even with a fixed term deal, and a kid at uni and working two jobs to stay afloat. Inevitable debt and next to no pension (I know 🤦🏼‍♀️ there are reasons, but still...)

I'm studying with the Open Univeraity and hoping to get into trainee role that will increase my salary by £6k pa and go upwards once qualified.

Planning to relocate next year to a place I love that is considerably cheaper. I'll be able to clear my debts and buy a bungalow (future proofing re health/old age) at a price that will enable me to half my mortgage and pay it off by the time I'm sixty.

Hoping that with reduced outgoings and better pay I'll be able to work part time in my sixties even if I can't afford to retire completely, and do something creative as a side hustle.

Life is getting tougher, trying to stay positive but like others, I'm find the rising costs of living difficult.

Spookedbythespiders · 07/08/2025 23:12

Even what I considered the in season veg at the supermarket today some of it was nearing £2.

i can only ever remember once before in my life scrutinising food prices and then I’d just been made redundant, and now I’m doing the same when employed.

This is sad. I feel the same. I don’t buy branded goods at the supermarket.

It was ever thus.

Well, no it wasn't! Not only are we living during a period of civilisational collapse, we also have technology that every human that ever lived couldn't even conceive of, and a culture that can't even begin to keep with with these developments.

I do think the country can’t afford to keep going as it is. I work in healthcare, and the amount of people who need support in various ways is just not sustainable. That’s not a political comment. It’s not right wing ramblings, I’m not saying it’s right or wrong or ethical or moral or whatever. I’m just saying when you actually see day to day the volume of people that require state support in one way or another, it’s just not affordable anymore.

Out of interest, and I know it might not be a simple answer, but what sort of support do these people need? In terms of, is this support something that would have been given by families in the past?

I suppose you need to try to predict what will be valuable to barter with in the post-apocalyptic Mad Max style anarchy that follows.

Fuel maybe? Have you considered buying an oil well? Failing that, getting a petrol station franchise?

Body parts, human tissue

I do think we are all too consumption focussed. Im trying to raise my children to enjoy more simple/cheap activities, time outdoors, gardening, board games, reading. Im also trying to make sure they appreciate simple home cooked food and don't always expect expensive holidays, but enjoy a uk camping trip as well

That's lovely if you have the luxury of time to do that. My kids did over lockdown when I was lucky enough not to work, we were skint, but we all loved the time to spend together. But I have to work due to the cost of living and they're all back on their screens now.

OH and I discuss this a lot. And wonder if we should move to a different country...we just can't think where

They’re managing to deal with technology then?

Civilisations haven’t collapsed before? Is that what you’re saying?

I’m anticipating things getting better because what other way is there to live? A positive mindset always gets me through and brings me better things than a negative one.

TheaBrandt1 · 08/08/2025 06:23

I used to be left of centre but now having awful thoughts like we just cannot afford to help people from other countries now. We need to focus on our own population only.

There needs to be some countrywide campaign to pull us all together in a positive way. Like 2012 Olympics but economically. Sounds mad but just a musing.

Can’t keep up with what technology?

20 years from now it's likely that a high proportion of children won't be able to read, we're moving to a post literate society. Dependence on AI to do our critical thinking, and undermining of human relationships, companionship and sexual urges provided for and new appetites created. Hormones, chemicals and surgeries to customise our "meat suits", reproductive technologies creating babies without parents, collapse in fertility. Huge mental health problems for young people brought up on screens, increased loneliness, confusion, synthetic identities, isolation, atomisation, and complete dependence on the machine for every facet of human survival, let alone any prospect of flourishing.

How is "clicking on and engaging" ignoring something? Perhaps this is a good example of some of the issues I was highlighting about technology, its irresistible isn't it? Against your own better judgement... here you are, telling us that you don't do this...

Happyher · 08/08/2025 06:31

When I started work in the 70s we were taxed at 30p in the £. So to me, taxes are very low. It’s all down to your own perspective

I am perfectly capable of keeping myself informed, what I chose do with that information is my business. I certainly don’t need you to tell me how I should think. By all means stay fearful, talk about it ‘a lot’ and keep your children attached to their screens, that’s entirely your choice.

Where did I say I don’t engage with technology?

BlueJuniper94 · 08/08/2025 06:36

You said you ignore doom porn. On a thread that you clicked on and read and posted on, with a doom porn title.

Do you have a problem with reading too? Try to imagine this concept: A person reads and takes in the information offered whilst still maintaining a mind of their own.

And by the way, you berated another poster about the way she’s raising her children, insinuating she doesn’t work as hard as you. You claim you have no choice but to stick your children in front of a screen. You aren’t working right now are you, why don’t you stop blathering on rudely to people and spend some quality time with your children.

Holluschickie · 08/08/2025 06:42

I am considering moving to Thailand when we retire. I have spent time there before.

I assume you’re still talking at me? On the contrary, it’s you who came marching on to the thread with a superior attitude, and a rude one.

I’m glad you finally understood what I was saying. 7/10 for comprehension finally.
