AIBU to think that 'patriarchy chicken' isn't the whole story?

Hear me out, as I reckon that this will be an unpopular opinion, but I am keen to know if my experience is just me or if others experience the same.

I hear a lot on this site about 'patriarchy chicken': simply put, the admirable notion that women deserve to take up space and not have to stand aside for men. Last week, I was in London, (I'm from a smaller UK city) I was STAGGERED by the utter lack of spatial awareness of women. I am a woman, for context: youngish (I'm 42 but look a lot younger) I found women knocked into me constantly and let their kids blunder into me and other people. I didn't have a problem with men at all. The other thing that I did notice was that all these women were white, and were all ages from young to late middle age (old women weren't an issue at all) I am mixed race. Before anyone thinks that I was the problem and was just out of my depth in London, that isn't the case. I am a trained dancer, I have a lot of spatial awareness, and I am used to London even though I haven't lived there for a while. I am starting to wonder if I need to play 'white supremacy chicken'!

I too have sadly experienced this. I think, as another commenter said, it works on social hierarchy and not so much conscious thought. The same way, many women have noticed some men do this to them I have noticed some white women do it to me.

I am amazed anyone thinks this is unlikely - just not very observant I guess.

Not very observant and also like to pretend that racism is a thing of the past. I mean actual racism, not 'racism' against white people's hurty feels.

There is non so blind.

But its good to see that you still excuse your own racism.

Harveywallbanger · 13/08/2025 14:43

Why do you think you are so racist op?
Do you think you would be happier living in a country that is not historically white?

I'm not racist. Racism against white people does not exist. Even if it did, my observations are perfectly valid.

I blame it on half the population being on their phone and taking no notice of anyone else, or caring about anyone else. I think women think they are not threatening so don't worry about knocking into people, at least some men realise they are bigger and likely to hurt someone if they bash into them too hard. I find teenage boys worst, uncoordinated and mooching about in the way. There may be some racial bias, but I don't have a big enough sample of being barged into to tell!

Of course it might be that it was racist when you weren't being bumped into, people avoiding bumping into you because you were mixed race, now you are just part of the furniture, no one notices your race any more so you get your fair share of getting bumped into.😀

Sdpbody · 14/08/2025 10:50

We get it, OP, you hate white people.

That is only true if you take the (very outdated) view that racism = prejudice+power. Nowadays it is accepted that that formula defines institutional/systemic racism. It does not define individual/attitudinal racism - and you have demonstrated vast amounts of the latter.

GrouachMacbeth · 14/08/2025 13:19

I have reported OP for racism. Racists do not deserve the oxygen of publicity.

Londonmummy66 · 14/08/2025 13:22

So have I. Ignorance of the definition of racism is no excuse for being so.

Edited

That isn't 'outdated' it is the definition. I have to laugh at being lectured by someone who describes themselves as 'mummy'.

Not quite sure why you think I have no children. You are wrong with your definition - it has not been the case for a long time now. Anyway, I'm not going to engage with such an unpleasant person any further.

I don't 'think you have no children'. I think that someone who describes themselves as 'mummy' is a certain type of person. Let's just say I'm not surprised at your take on my thread.

I’m white and for all those people who jumped down the OPs throat for suggesting this might be a thing just consider your white privilege and the things that we do not experience simply by being white.
As a woman we have all experienced men assuming right of way on footpaths and simply expecting women to step out of their way. Is it so difficult to imagine that some white women may behave the same way but to people of colour?
And again - of course not all white women etc etc.
If we want to address racism we need to listen to the experiences of others and the micro- aggressions they face daily. Otherwise we’re complicit

Thank you! I am heartened by the fact that some people do get it and don't just rush to defend and minimise. I bet a lot of the women jumping down my throat would be the first to complain about a man being sexist towards them. It is really ridiculous.

What a very unpleasant and nasty thing to say.

SkylarFalls · 14/08/2025 14:05

I never have a problem bumping into men, because I subconsciously give them right of way and dont even notice myself doing it, unless I'm CONSCIOUSLY forcing myself to play patriarchy chicken, only THEN is there any social awareness discord between us.

What's more, when the subconscious default is to be small passing men, when I man DOES performatively offer you right of way, it goes noticed.

Woman on woman without that automatic subconscious right of way, there's much more likely to be clashes..

Men on men is more complicated again as they notice each other more than they notice non young and pretty women, but they've got their own set of unspoken rules so it's a smoother encounter

That's all very well, but what about the nonsense I'm responding to? Why are you telling me off and not them?

It is one definition.
And the one that people use when they want to ignore the fact that they are racist.
