Confronted swimmer for pool hygiene

My gym has a pool which I’m a regular user of - there are visible signs stating you must shower prior to going in the pool or using the spa facilities.

This afternoon, I witnessed a woman exit the toilet after spending a few minutes in there, wash her hands and proceed to poolside. She did not shower and went straight in to the pool which was busy with families in being the summer holidays.

I (very politely) pointed out to her that there is a requirement to shower prior to using the pool and she simply shrugged her shoulders and looked away.

I wouldn’t usually have said anything, but it’s the fact I know she was using the toilet (and for that length of time, it was clearly not for a pee!) so for me it shows a complete lack of disrespect. Before anyone asks, I know she was in there for that long as they are visible from the changing area.

Can you believe the cheek of some people!!

First…this thread is gross.

That being said this line in the OP made Mae laugh, given the the topic.

Can you believe the cheek of some people!!

🤣

Just to further shatter the illusion of hygiene at Canadian pools. Last week I was at a very popular water park. Code brown everyone out, then they literally scooped out the visible lumps of poop and everyone went back in the pool as if nothing had happened!

That's disgusting.

A child pooped in the children's pool at a pool I go to regularly in Germany. The whole pool was emptied first of people, then of water, the poo was removed, the entire pool was disinfected and I don't know what happened next because I was finished my swim.

In Germany I'd say that most people do shower naked before and after their swim.

GoldPoster · 06/08/2025 22:42

I wonder why some people use a public swimming pool. Newsflash, other people use it too, and most of them won’t have the hygiene standards that seem to be expected

DiscoBob · 06/08/2025 22:43

Could she not have showered before she used the bathroom and you didn't see?

I wouldn't really want to imagine that people can't be trusted to use the loo then the pool without shit and piss transferring through their clothing into the chlorinated water.

I'd just end up never ever using any swimming pool ever again.

Reminds of the days when you had to walk though a murky disinfectant foot bath before entering the pool. I dont think a quick rinse without soap does much cleaning.

We had to scrub each other down with wire brushes and Dettol in my day. And we still got a hiding if we came home with a verruca.

Isitreallysohard · 06/08/2025 22:44

YANBU, but I doubt anyone showers immediately before going into a pool

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 06/08/2025 22:46

No one fully showers before getting in the pool, quick rinse under with swimsuit on and that's it. What were you expecting her to do??

Shartly · 06/08/2025 22:46

l feel like those courtesy ‘stand under a shower for 5 seconds’-type shower setups before the pool while in your swimming costume are daft anyway.

in Iceland (and I imagine other places too), everyone showers before they enter a hot spring or public pool. Ass naked, in a communal shower, scrubbed well with soap. Some pool changing rooms even have an attendant who will happily call you out if you’ve not washed thoroughly, or tried to avoid the showers altogether. I know it doesn’t help if the water has been visited and desecrated by pool pissers, but it sure feels a lot more hygienic than in this country!

Unless you have access to one in someone's home, that leaves you with wild water, which is definitely worse.

It's fine, really. The chemicals are carefully managed to kill off the nasties and you really won't get ill or die. Verrucas are probably the biggest danger and they come from the floor.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/08/2025 22:47

I agree with the posters who have said that this poor woman is probably perfectly capable of cleaning her bum properly after a poo, @LindaYog - and frankly, if she is in the habit of leaving her arse coated in shit, a swift run under the shower is not going to render it shiny and clean!

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 06/08/2025 22:48

I'm more concerned that you watched the toilet door and monitored how long she was in there. I would have given you short shrift too.

DisabledDemon · 06/08/2025 22:49

I never go near public pools for this reason - disgusting hygiene.

We went to Spain some years ago to an absolutely awful hotel in Mijas Costa. I was about to go for a swim in the pool when my husband said, 'Oh no, you're not.' and pointed at the pool. The mothers were washing their babies' shitty arses in it.

Some people are truly repulsive.

winewolfhowls · 06/08/2025 22:50

goldtrap · 06/08/2025 22:12

I have my own pool and it doesn't smell of chlorine at all. When I asked my pool guy why it didn't smell like a public pool, he said it was because a strong chlorine smell in a pool is due to a build-up of chloramines from the reaction of chlorine with organic matter, especially urine. (And obviously, I don't piss in my pool).

So the question is, OP, did your pool smell of chlorine before your shitty swimmer got in? If so, her shower is moot.

Eek is this true? Ours stinks so much of chlorine it's enough to make your eyes water

She's clearly a Fifth Bottomist, sent from the Office of Bottom Inspectors.

Clingfilm · 06/08/2025 22:50

The whole British pool etiquette needs an overhaul, starting with all hair tied up/swim caps, and flip flops for the changing side to poolside transition.

It's mad that you can walk into a changing room with your outside shoes on then be expected to walk on the same muddy floor to the pool.

MrsVino · 06/08/2025 22:51

Iceandfire92 · 06/08/2025 22:10

A swimming pool is effectively a soup of everybody's poo particles, skin follicles etc. Did you enjoy basking in your own self-righteousness after policing someone's behaviour in a public space who has done nothing to you by publicly shaming them? Do you confront the parents of babies being taken into the the pool wearing shitty water nappies? Most importantly, would you have confronted a man about similar behaviour?

.

This is precisely why I loathe swimming pools 🤢

Id rather have mud from outside than bum crumbs

I think you are really over thinking this!
I assume she was wearing a swimsuit, so how do you really think that any possible speck of poo from round her bum is going to make its way out of her swimsuit and into the pool?!
Its quite disturbing that you’re watching and noting how long people are spending in the toilet and if you’re that paranoid you shouldn’t use public facilities.

I used to like that part weirdly

If you are ever in Tokyo, you can experience this before the Water area of TeamLab Planets sensory experience. I was actually very surprised that the communality of the experience didn't give Japanese people the ick bearing in mind the conventions re shoes in the house and shower before bathing

Ok, that is a bit much. But I've never seen anyone do that, in Spain or anywhere else. Once someone had a poo escape at baby swim and we all got out while the staff did things with nets and chemicals, but that's the worst I've had.

ManchesterLu · 06/08/2025 22:54

Pools have chlorine. People wee, poo, throw up, spit, and have sex (I witnessed this absolutely flipping bizarre behaviour at my local pool where two people were in the corner thinking nobody could tell.. we could).

Nobody washes their bum hole before they get in the pool. In fact, seeing as hers had just been wiped, it was probably one of the cleanest bum holes in the pool!

If you can't handle disgusting things, a public swimming pool is definitely not for you.

Don't swallow the water, and wash yourself before you get dressed again. Job jobbed.

IndieRocknRoll · 06/08/2025 22:55

If you really are that squeamish then you absolutely shouldn’t be using public swimming pools Tbh.

You would have died at the haven pool DH took DC to years ago. Someone took an actual dump in the pool. It was floating around in the surface for a good while before they cleared everyone out. It’s scarred him for life 😂
