Confronted swimmer for pool hygiene

My gym has a pool which I’m a regular user of - there are visible signs stating you must shower prior to going in the pool or using the spa facilities.

This afternoon, I witnessed a woman exit the toilet after spending a few minutes in there, wash her hands and proceed to poolside. She did not shower and went straight in to the pool which was busy with families in being the summer holidays.

I (very politely) pointed out to her that there is a requirement to shower prior to using the pool and she simply shrugged her shoulders and looked away.

I wouldn’t usually have said anything, but it’s the fact I know she was using the toilet (and for that length of time, it was clearly not for a pee!) so for me it shows a complete lack of disrespect. Before anyone asks, I know she was in there for that long as they are visible from the changing area.

Can you believe the cheek of some people!!

Reminds of the days when you had to walk though a murky disinfectant foot bath before entering the pool. I dont think a quick rinse without soap does much cleaning.

I used to like that part weirdly

Many thanks for this thread.

In some countries ( eg Canada) the expectation is that you shower naked and use soap, Most pools have shower cubicles to encourage this.
A quick rinse in a costume really makes little or no difference.

What? Where, exactly?
I'm in YVR. Never seen that.
Swimmer here since childhood.
All I've ever routinely seen is a quick walk under the shower. Lots of people skip it altogether.

Scarlettpixie · 06/08/2025 21:44

You have to be kidding right? She isn’t going to strip off and get the soap out to clean her bum hole! If she doesn’t, sticking a leg in the shower for a few seconds or even her whole self with a cossie on won’t make any difference.

rollerblind · 06/08/2025 21:49

Public swimming pools perhaps aren’t for you…

BreakingBroken · 06/08/2025 21:50

another middle aged middle classed canadian who showers at home and simply uses the pool shower on the arms and legs with a hand full of water to my upper chest to ease the transition to the pool.
i'm not dirty, my butt cheeks are not getting soaped up in public.

Birdh0use · 06/08/2025 21:50

What messes up the pool is body moisturizer and suncream neither of which will be rinsed off in shower. Chill your boots. The chlorine kills the bum bugs

LT1233 · 06/08/2025 21:51

Poor woman is probably at home embarrassed out of her mind now, so nice one for that . Barely anyone showers entering a pool as far as I've ever seen, and even if everyone did, they'd have to be naked and scrubbing with a bar of soap for it to be of much use. I find if you don't overthink swimming pools, and have a proper shower with soap afterwards, it makes the experience a lot more tolerable.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 06/08/2025 21:52

I've never had a shower before getting in a swimming pool and I've never seen a notice telling me to do so.

Of course a shower at home isn’t sufficient - and certainly not after an emptying of the bowels!

" an emptying of the bowels " sounds like a quote from a Poirot episode. Most of us would just say poo 💩.

I'm in YEG and I've never seen it either. No idea where these ultra hygienic Canadian pools must be!

LBFseBrom · 06/08/2025 21:53

She might use wipes that she carries in her bag, I always have them. You can't judge what people do in the loo. A pre-swim shower wouldn't be more than a rinse.

Zanatdy · 06/08/2025 21:55

sure she wiped her arse.

Robogob · 06/08/2025 21:55

You do not know she availed herself of a shit. Would you have been heartened to see her cleaning her arse with a big sponge? Perhaps go as far as congratulate her?

Where is Canada?! Never seen this in Vancouver, Calgary or the Banff hot springs.

YouWillFindMeInTheGarden · 06/08/2025 21:56

Also Linda, you didn’t actually ‘confront’ her did you? No. She looked at you, shrugged and walked off…..some ‘confrontation’ that was!

AvidJadeShaker · 06/08/2025 21:56

Was you timing her in the toilet?

Are you the pool/poo police?

Maybe she’s learnt how to wipe her bum.

CorvusPurpureus · 06/08/2025 21:56

This is why everywhere needs to adopt the bum gun. In the ME, you exit the toilet with a lovely clean bottom.

Netcurtainnelly · 06/08/2025 21:58

Ewwwww this thread has putme off swimming now although I don't go very much. Usually on holiday.😀

RoseGlass7 · 06/08/2025 21:58

Very funny thread 😄

Slimtoddy · 06/08/2025 22:00

Generally speaking you should shower before a swim as it helps remove moisturizer and other stuff on your skin and hair. Obviously a short shower is not as effective as a long shower but every little helps. Also, if you thoroughly wet your hair it makes it harder for chlorine to penetrate so helps protect your hair.

If one thinks too much about what goes on in pools nobody would swim.

BlueMum16 · 06/08/2025 22:01

If she had been for a poo I'm sure she will have wiped her bum properly.

They ask you to shower to remove any creams or deodorant from the surface of the skin to help with chlorination of the pool. It's not to remove faeces.

Don't over think this.

Cathod · 06/08/2025 22:02

Swimming pools are gross in general. When I take my toddler to swimming lessons we are the only ones who take off our shoes before going in the changing rooms. Everyone else wears them in to the changing room or worse wears them poolside (many change poolside). Prams and pushchairs are brought in too.

DreamTheMoors · 06/08/2025 22:02

ForLoveNotMoney · 06/08/2025 21:29

This is 100% a wind up.

It was the “a complete lack of disrespect” that got me. lol

TeenLifeMum · 06/08/2025 22:02

If there’s families in the pool then you can be confident it’s gross already, thankfully we have chlorine.
