Confronted swimmer for pool hygiene

My gym has a pool which I’m a regular user of - there are visible signs stating you must shower prior to going in the pool or using the spa facilities.

This afternoon, I witnessed a woman exit the toilet after spending a few minutes in there, wash her hands and proceed to poolside. She did not shower and went straight in to the pool which was busy with families in being the summer holidays.

I (very politely) pointed out to her that there is a requirement to shower prior to using the pool and she simply shrugged her shoulders and looked away.

I wouldn’t usually have said anything, but it’s the fact I know she was using the toilet (and for that length of time, it was clearly not for a pee!) so for me it shows a complete lack of disrespect. Before anyone asks, I know she was in there for that long as they are visible from the changing area.

Can you believe the cheek of some people!!

This is sooooooooo weird

LyndaSnellsSniff · 06/08/2025 22:03

I think if you are prepared to share a large body of chlorinated water with a load of strangers, then you need to accept that bugs there will be aplenty.

Swimming pools are manksville.

Tiswa · 06/08/2025 22:04

I suspect swimming is just not for you that is how public pools are - swim nappies do not keep in urine for example it is why they are full of chemicals!

it is just best not to think about it if you want a swim and shower after

Confusdworriedmum · 06/08/2025 22:05

So weird. Most adults can wipe their ass can't they? Why were you watching how long people took on the toilet, that's also really weird.

estrogone · 06/08/2025 22:05

Lol. Definitely a wind up.

Worry more about little Johnny having a piss x 1000, or the snot trickling from every other toddler's nose. Or the bit of period blood that escaped a tampon. Public pools are cesspits. You must accept this and enjoy your swim (which is what most of us do).

Alt.

That lady may have been doing a Wordle on the loo.

BlueMum16 · 06/08/2025 22:01

If she had been for a poo I'm sure she will have wiped her bum properly.

They ask you to shower to remove any creams or deodorant from the surface of the skin to help with chlorination of the pool. It's not to remove faeces.

Don't over think this.

I also always understood the point of the shower before hand was to remove things like sweat and antiperspirant that can react with the chlorine.

I was told its what makes your eyes sting.

You actually don't know what she did in the toilet.
Stop watching and timing other people

This.

Of course a shower at home isn’t sufficient - and certainly not after an emptying of the bowels!

But you think a quick rinse under a communal pool shower with her cozzie on WOULD be sufficient? In what way?

HauntedHero · 06/08/2025 22:06

In some countries ( eg Canada) the expectation is that you shower naked and use soap

Never seen it in Canada, Denmark yes.

Eyesopenwideawake · 06/08/2025 22:07

OP – bit of advice. Don't watch the swimming pool episode of Motherland.

You need to give up swimming. 99% of people don't shower before they get in the pool. Those who do, don't do it naked or use soap. Plenty don't shower after the pool at all (or they do it at home) even though they're covered in chlorine water, you've got no chance of persuading people to do it before they get in.

I’m genuinely curious @LindaYog, how you think that a quick rinse under the shower with a costume on would clean her backside?!

Eyesopenwideawake · 06/08/2025 22:09

Sorry, just read the whole thread. How many of you actually stick a bar of soap up your rectum after having a poo? Am I missing something important here??

ByBlueLion · 06/08/2025 22:09

i once was indeed told off by a woman in a communal shower in Iceland as you are expected to have a proper soap and scrub naked shower before going in the hot pools.

Iceandfire92 · 06/08/2025 22:10

A swimming pool is effectively a soup of everybody's poo particles, skin follicles etc. Did you enjoy basking in your own self-righteousness after policing someone's behaviour in a public space who has done nothing to you by publicly shaming them? Do you confront the parents of babies being taken into the the pool wearing shitty water nappies? Most importantly, would you have confronted a man about similar behaviour?

.

goldtrap · 06/08/2025 22:12

I have my own pool and it doesn't smell of chlorine at all. When I asked my pool guy why it didn't smell like a public pool, he said it was because a strong chlorine smell in a pool is due to a build-up of chloramines from the reaction of chlorine with organic matter, especially urine. (And obviously, I don't piss in my pool).

So the question is, OP, did your pool smell of chlorine before your shitty swimmer got in? If so, her shower is moot.

Stichintime · 06/08/2025 21:23

Reminds of the days when you had to walk though a murky disinfectant foot bath before entering the pool. I dont think a quick rinse without soap does much cleaning.

Memory unlocked! I wonder why those disappeared?

No, I really can’t believe the cheek of “some people”
Some people = YOU, OP
Are you serious??? You approached a random stranger to tell her to shower before getting into a swimming pool
Dear god, the mind boggles

TwistedWonder · 06/08/2025 22:14

How long until they go back to school?

MN has been full of absolute nonsense threads this week

I’m really lost now. How do you know she opened her bowels.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 06/08/2025 22:16

God I thought this thread was going to be about a man taking aim and pissing into the pool or someone sitting on the edge cutting their toenails into the water. It’s very weird to time a stranger in the toilet never mind tell her off. No one has a proper arsehole scrubbing shower immediately prior to getting into a swimming pool and I don’t believe the “Canada” tale either. Who the hell could be arsed getting fully showered, dried and then get their costume back on before going swimming?

Notashamed13 · 06/08/2025 22:17

Ahhh yet another reason why I refuse to wear goggles......all that toe jam, belly button fluff and bogies that are clear to see put me right off 🤢🤮. Give me sore eyes and a blurry swim any day!

rollerblind · 06/08/2025 21:49

Public swimming pools perhaps aren’t for you…

It's a gym with a pool
She probably thinks paying a membership fee gives her the right to spy on other members and police their hygiene.

DoubleDoubleDown · 06/08/2025 22:20

Just to further shatter the illusion of hygiene at Canadian pools. Last week I was at a very popular water park. Code brown everyone out, then they literally scooped out the visible lumps of poop and everyone went back in the pool as if nothing had happened!
