Confronted swimmer for pool hygiene

My gym has a pool which I’m a regular user of - there are visible signs stating you must shower prior to going in the pool or using the spa facilities.

This afternoon, I witnessed a woman exit the toilet after spending a few minutes in there, wash her hands and proceed to poolside. She did not shower and went straight in to the pool which was busy with families in being the summer holidays.

I (very politely) pointed out to her that there is a requirement to shower prior to using the pool and she simply shrugged her shoulders and looked away.

I wouldn’t usually have said anything, but it’s the fact I know she was using the toilet (and for that length of time, it was clearly not for a pee!) so for me it shows a complete lack of disrespect. Before anyone asks, I know she was in there for that long as they are visible from the changing area.

Can you believe the cheek of some people!!

OP you just got the ick with swimming pools. They are a bit gross and those kids would definitely have been weeing.

I thought this would be a thread about blokes blowing the contents of their nose into the water 🤢
Just look out for that too.
90% of men do it within the space of 2 lengths..Just avoid it as it inevitably floats directly over to you.

Why didn't you ask to inspect her arse while you were at it?

CurlewKate · 07/08/2025 08:20

Oh joy-now we have ageism and “fat people are dirty” entering the ring. Welcome, the Mumsnet-isms!

Cantbleedingcope · 07/08/2025 08:22

Christ. Wait till OP finds out that people also sometimes deliberately wee in public swimming pools

Of course a shower at home isn’t sufficient - and certainly not after an emptying of the bowels!

So you have a shower every time you have a poo? Or you have a bidet?

PrincessofWells · 07/08/2025 08:31

Fgs just be grateful she used the toilet and didn't pooh in the pool.

YABVU

You have no idea what she was doing in that cubicle, and just for your information, some women do take a long time to empty their bladders, be bloody thankful you don't have that problem.

As others have said, a quick dip under a shower in a costume will do nothing. She washed her hands before going into a CHLORINATED swimming pool.

Now give over.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 07/08/2025 08:50

What nationality are you? I went to Denmark and was really shocked by the pre and post swimming showering requirements. It was very different to what is expected in the uk

I am imagining you saying this in high pitched, outraged tones, something like Lady Button from Ghosts.

🤣🤣🤣

You do know youre swimming in a load of piss anyway? Babies and kids just wee freely in these pools.

This reminds me of when my daughter started swimming lessons at 3, every week she’d say she needed a wee half way through the lesson and would insist on taking off and putting on her own wet cossie wasting 10 minutes of the lesson and most of the time she didn’t actually wee, or if she did it was a tiny drop so one day I told her to just wee in the pool if she felt she needed it in the lesson. At the end of the lesson she got out and in the loudest voice ever proclaimed ‘I just did a wee in the pool like you told me too mummy’ 🙈

lechatnoir · 07/08/2025 08:55

Swimming teacher here - sorry OP but the vast majority of people using the pool don't show first. And as others have pointed out, a 10 second rinse isn't going to do shit so unless someone is noticeably dirty, I just don't even think about it, Thank god for chlorine!

GentleJadeOP · 07/08/2025 08:56

How embarrassing for the woman. There’s just no need to make people feel bad like this. I suggest you just don’t go swimming anymore in a public pool. That woman is probably still mortified at your comment, so sad

Cherrytree86 · 07/08/2025 08:59

We should do what they do in Japan and have onsens - single sex pools where everyone is naked and it’s compulsory to have a thorough shower with soap etc before getting in. It’s way more hygienic

Hmm its an idea. Would certainly save on the expense of costumes.

Grammarnut · 07/08/2025 09:16

When I go swimming I have a quick swill under the shower in my swimming suit. Everyone else does the same - have you tried putting on a swimming suit when you have just had a shower?
I am clean anyway, having had a shower at home earlier.

Mind you we are planning a trip to Japan. Not sure any of me and the 2 daughters would be keen on nekkid swimming...

brunettemic · 07/08/2025 09:34

My takeaway from this is that when you go to the toilet you’re not clean and so assume others are the same.

sunsetoverit · 07/08/2025 09:37

Did you use the timer on your phone, gross

@Skissors

i have been and it’s fine, everyone is naked, no one stares or anything like that, and it’s way more hygienic

ByBlueLion · 07/08/2025 09:49

@Cherrytree86 exactly, having worked in a spa hotel in Germany, many countries that have a history of naked bathing/sauna etc have strict etiquette around cleanliness, clothing or lack of and using communal facilities so probably think Brits are pretty grubby in comparison. Germans aren't reticent when it comes to telling people off! Abroad in steam rooms, you have a shower hose in steam rooms to wash down the sweat after you leave your seat. I love steam rooms but try very hard in the uk not to think about the sweat of the prior occupants im sitting in in UK spas with no hoses (or where there is 1, people dont know they need to use it!). But I'm never fussed about swimming pools here, anything that has a child's or baby's bottom in it is never going to be hygienic.

Rubbish babies and toddlers have swim nappies on

BubblyBath178 · 07/08/2025 11:03

When you imagine all the people doing a wee in there 🤮 🤮, I’m sure you’ll be fine.

BTW, apart from Vicky Pollard, who on earth wees in a pool above the age of about 4?? So gross 🤮
