Confronted swimmer for pool hygiene

My gym has a pool which I’m a regular user of - there are visible signs stating you must shower prior to going in the pool or using the spa facilities.

This afternoon, I witnessed a woman exit the toilet after spending a few minutes in there, wash her hands and proceed to poolside. She did not shower and went straight in to the pool which was busy with families in being the summer holidays.

I (very politely) pointed out to her that there is a requirement to shower prior to using the pool and she simply shrugged her shoulders and looked away.

I wouldn’t usually have said anything, but it’s the fact I know she was using the toilet (and for that length of time, it was clearly not for a pee!) so for me it shows a complete lack of disrespect. Before anyone asks, I know she was in there for that long as they are visible from the changing area.

Can you believe the cheek of some people!!

People pee in the pool all the time. I recall a ‘Play Your Cards Right’ episode years ago, when one of questions was how many people secretly admit to having pee’d in the pool, and it was above 50%! I remember being really grossed out about it…

Mademetoxic · 06/08/2025 21:24

Why were you timing her in the toilets?

Also there could have been a queue in the toilets so she did in fact just go for a wee - or may have been changing a tampon 🤷🏼‍♀️

Saltedtoffee · 06/08/2025 22:21

Could have just been on her period.

I have my own pool and it doesn't smell of chlorine at all. When I asked my pool guy why it didn't smell like a public pool, he said it was because a strong chlorine smell in a pool is due to a build-up of chloramines from the reaction of chlorine with organic matter, especially urine. (And obviously, I don't piss in my pool).

So the question is, OP, did your pool smell of chlorine before your shitty swimmer got in? If so, her shower is moot.

Same. You could drink the water in my pool if you didn't mind the bugs/leaves/sand/friendly toad who jumps in most evenings to do a few lengths.

Public pools smell of chlorine because they're full of wee. The occasional potentially grimy bum is the least of anyone's worries tbh.

Of course a shower at home isn’t sufficient - and certainly not after an emptying of the bowels!

A poolside shower in a swimming costume will make FA difference to that too. YABU and a frankly total weirdo for monitoring how long a stranger is in the loo. Mind your own business and get on with your swim. You're not the pool cop.

Scarlettpixie · 06/08/2025 21:44

You have to be kidding right? She isn’t going to strip off and get the soap out to clean her bum hole! If she doesn’t, sticking a leg in the shower for a few seconds or even her whole self with a cossie on won’t make any difference.

I’ve never missed the laughing reaction button more, some top quality responses here 😂

YABU

You can't get naked and have a proper hot shower with soap and sponge and an all-over body clean in the showers they have at the poolside. It's a pointless token gesture really, the whole 'must shower before entering pool' thing.

Indeed

This is you isn’t it

That looks like my gym pool and aqua aerobics instructor
I'll have to tell her she's famous. 😁

B1anche · 06/08/2025 22:26

it shows a complete lack of disrespect.

Hang on...so doesn't that mean she actually showed respect?

I can't believe you confronted a stranger about not showering. Also, why are you so concerned that she might have had a shit before her swim? I assume she didn't get in the pool with visible shit smeared all over herself, so what makes you think she wouldn't have wiped her arse properly afterwards? In any case, you don't know that she had a shit. Perhaps you should just concentrate on your swim next time.

I am imagining you saying this in high pitched, outraged tones, something like Lady Button from Ghosts.

Oh I love her!

Drivingthevengabus · 06/08/2025 22:29

This obviously never actually happened but this thread has given me a much needed giggle, so thanks for that OP!

Shitty swimmer 😂😂😂

Do you really think a quick rinse under water with no soap is going to clean her arse if she hasn’t wiped properly ? The Klingons will still be on the starboard bow if they were there to start with.

BellissimoGecko · 06/08/2025 22:31

Elizabeth1000 · 06/08/2025 21:02

If she has shit on her arse, covered by a costume, a quick tinkle of shower water won’t even touch it. You’ll have to hope that she wiped her arse properly and washed her hands (which she did).

This

Notmyreality · 06/08/2025 22:31

You might want to read that again.

Do people not wipe thoroughly in your world? And how do you know how long she was in the toilet and what she was doing?

I don't get it. A shower at home is a lot more thorough than the cursory poolside shower in a swimming costume. And it doesn't occur to me to worry about who might have gone to the toilet and why.

Just to further shatter the illusion of hygiene at Canadian pools. Last week I was at a very popular water park. Code brown everyone out, then they literally scooped out the visible lumps of poop and everyone went back in the pool as if nothing had happened!

Ewwww. I remember my DD was sick in the pool. I took her out immediately and reported it and almost straight away everyone was called out of the water and the pool was closed for the whole day. This was in Pontins in Blackpool.

I think if this is your opinion then probably
public pools aren’t for you. You know people pee in them, don’t you?

In fact it definitely is my gym and my instructor. The gym name is at the bottom of the photo.

FreddysFingers · 06/08/2025 22:34

She might have been emptying her menstrual cup or changing her tampon.

JustSawJohnny · 06/08/2025 22:34

As if people have a full, proper shower before getting into the pool!

Users pretty much just get wet, and that IS the point of it, rather than hygiene - the request is to wash DEBRIS off so it doesn't end up in pool filters. It's not FOR pool users, really. It's an anti mud/sand/random bits measure.

There is no requirement to soap up head to toe before submerging yourself in chlorine.

I bet you would've been horrified if she'd bent over and lathered up her butt hole in your presence!

I'd worry more about the pissers. You just know it happens. Shudder.

But what is a rinse in a shower with a costume on going to do? Maybe there should be a rule insisting on using a bidet before entering a swimming pool...

ShesTheAlbatross · 06/08/2025 22:36

How do you clean yourself before going in the pool? You can’t think a quick rinse in a swimming costume without soap makes you significantly cleaner than this woman?

Yeah, but it's a good one. I don't mind when they're good.
