I feel very embarrassed when he wears a white vest that is clearly an underwear vest walking the dog and going to the local Tesco express. I really don’t like it and ask him to change or put a top over it. None of the family will be seen out with him like this.

Not really no but I suppose it's a smidge better than going bare chested.

RedToothBrush · 05/08/2025 14:03

Is his name Onslow?

If it is, it's perfectly acceptable.

If it's not, then he shouldn't be offended when people make that mistake.

Cheesecrunch · 05/08/2025 14:03

Does it fit? Are his nipples covered? If so then I don’t see the problem! Why are you trying to control what he wears?

My husband will wear a white vest occasionally and honestly, he looks great it it 😂

So it's fine for women to go out in strappy camisoles but not for men to go out in sleeveless t shirts (aka vests)?

Thanksman · 05/08/2025 14:05

Yes, I think it’s perfectly acceptable.

thistimelastweek · 05/08/2025 14:06

It's a hell no from me.

TerrierCollector · 05/08/2025 14:08

It's not a look I would particularly like my partner wearing, to be honest, but women go out in little vest tops all the time, so I don't see why a man shouldn't be able to.

FenderStrat · 05/08/2025 14:08

Mmmm... i wonder what the Mumsnet reaction would be to men declaring women's clothes to be unacceptable in public places?

IdaGlossop · 05/08/2025 14:08

Definitely not.

Denimrules · 05/08/2025 14:09

As long as it's not a string vest 😀

Many years ago, one of my favourite t shirts was a small mens vest. Admittedly it was black not white and short sleeved not sleeveless. It was really useful for hiking or any occasion where a casual black top long enough to tuck in was req

FrenchandSaunders · 05/08/2025 14:09

Does he buy cans of stella in the Tesco Express and drink it on an old sofa in the front garden?

Agreed, but it is true that there are some shockingly skimpy outfits that one notices when out and about 🤣

KimberleyClark · 05/08/2025 14:12

Is it what they call a wife beater vest or is that a string one?

Ablondiebutagoody · 05/08/2025 14:12

How is an underwear vest different to a non-underwear vest?

Either way, it's fine. Does he tell you what you are allowed to wear?

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 05/08/2025 14:13

Legally? Yes
Socially? No

Gemmawemma9 · 05/08/2025 14:13

But it’s not just a vest… it’s an M&S vest
😆

Dangermoo · 05/08/2025 14:15

It's certainly acceptable, for it to give you the ick. 🤢 plus those other poor women, who are forced to see it 😆 🤣

Would it be acceptable if that was the case? Or not? Bit difficult to know.

Netcurtainnelly · 05/08/2025 14:15

First world problems he can wear what he wants. Other people are.

I think the string one is 1970s dad in the garden vibes. I can't recall my own dad doing this but I picture neighbours mowing their lawns

DeLaRuiz · 05/08/2025 14:17

It’s acceptable if you have low standards. Otherwise, obviously NO!

thistimelastweek · 05/08/2025 14:23

Does he look like this?

AlannaOfTrebond · 05/08/2025 14:24

If he's Antipodean or in his twenties, fairly culturally normal. If not, I'd call it a brave choice... But as I don't like having what I wear policed, I'd say it's still his choice, (not saying you have to like it).

purplecorkheart · 05/08/2025 14:24

Grim but better than topless I guess.
