I feel very embarrassed when he wears a white vest that is clearly an underwear vest walking the dog and going to the local Tesco express. I really don’t like it and ask him to change or put a top over it. None of the family will be seen out with him like this.

Does the vest have short sleeves?

You can get two kinds of vests- short sleeves and no sleeves.

lazyarse123 · 05/08/2025 16:36

Depends whether he looks like Marlon Brando or your grandad. One is fine the other not so much. But seriously it shouldn't matter.

I think people should wear what they want shopping as long as it doesn't frighten the horses. I, inadvertently went out in my pj's bottoms today to the local convenience store and didn't realise until I came back. Nobody noticed

Anyway, I think a vest is no big deal honestly..get over it.

How can anyone go out shopping in their PJs 'inadvertently'?

DartmoorWanderer · 05/08/2025 16:38

Of course it is. I wear my white M&S vest (not underwear, but looks like it!) all the time

PestoHoliday · 05/08/2025 16:41

It's as bit Rab C Nesbitt. Or Stan Ogden.

Nevertrustacop · 05/08/2025 16:43

Honestly I don't think I'd want to see it but thats a me problem and not a problem with your DH.

Horsie · 05/08/2025 16:45

I wouldn't like that either, OP. I like clean-cut, well-groomed, and nicely dressed men. A white vest doesn't do it.

OutingHobbyWife · 05/08/2025 16:48

@BadLad 🤣🤣🤣

PersephoneSeethes · 05/08/2025 16:50

My husband pitched in saying that context is very important. Is your DH buffed/fit/well muscled? If he’s not then no, put a real shirt on when leaving the back garden. We are a mixed Australian/Brit couple so have a bit of skin in the game.

So it's fine for women to go out in strappy camisoles but not for men to go out in sleeveless t shirts (aka vests)?

I think they suit more women then men, body shape wise most women can pull them off strangely, or maybe it’s the fit of a man’s one? Also women wear jewellery a lot which dresses it up

Mangetouts · 05/08/2025 16:56

No, it wouldn't be acceptable even if was from Selfridge or Harrods, never mind M&S!

Yabberwok · 05/08/2025 16:58

No, never, ever, under any circumstances , at any time; no vest top is ever suitable for a man to wear unless under a shirt. Even if he is ripped, hairless and looks like a Greek god. It's a crime against fashion.

Ps I am male and prefer men to keep their tops on

FullOfLemons · 05/08/2025 16:59

It depends on if he can carry of the look.

Somebody like David Beckham would get away with it. It would go nice with his tattoos.

Is that you Victoria ?

Given that very few people, male or female, between the ages of 5 and 75 actually wear vests as underwear, i.e. under some other more covering garment, and given that vests in all styles are universal feminine outerwear at this time of the year, why should a white men's vest, from either Primark or M&S, be identified as underwear by definition, and therefore regarded with such disgust.

Almost the only difference between the aforesaid M&S vest and the feminine garment seen en masse on the High Street is the width of the shoulder straps. It's about time manufacturers produced proper strappy vests for men, and for more men to have the balls to appear in public in clothes more suited to the climate.

Damn, how did you know my husband started wearing vests at age 75 ? 😂

Yes.

MischiefandMayhemManaged · 05/08/2025 17:08

Hyacinth? Is that you?

Much better than being bare chested! Might not be to everyones taste - but as i said... mich better than wandering around topless!!!

Needspaceforlego · 05/08/2025 15:33

Maybe the black would look more like a top rather than white underwear

If it has short sleeves then it's not a vest. Isn't a vest always sleeveless? I'm old enough to remember when a man's sleeveless undergarment was called "a singlet".

As in, "I'm knitting a singlet for Cecil" song:

If my DH did I’d be mortified, while secretly wanting to rub his chest.

Also I also think Brando was beautiful and although what one looks like does not change one’s rights to wear certain clothes, it is always nice to see scantily clad beauties in the supermarket doing their shopping.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 05/08/2025 17:20

No. It's the same as wearing pj's to the shops. It's an undergarment.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 05/08/2025 17:21

My Dad used to wear a vest but only when he was relaxing at home.

namechangeGOT · 05/08/2025 17:22

Am I still allowed to wear my white vests with my jeans? Or is it just men that shouldn’t wear them?

TheChosenTwo · 05/08/2025 17:23

I don’t really like to wear vests as my only item of clothing on the top half if I’m out of the house but plenty of people do.
I don’t see what’s wrong with a man wearing a vest if I’m trying to be objective!
What is so awful about a man’s arms?!

IfNot · 05/08/2025 17:26

But what about a man telling his wife what is and isn't acceptable for her to wear in public?
What, like in Afghanistan?
Because that really, actually happens, in real life, and women in Iran get stoned to death for uncovering their hair. Whereas this thread is just women having an opinion on style.
THATS why “ double standards” exist!
Anyway, YANBU OP.

FourIsNewSix · 05/08/2025 17:31

It's fine.
He is not trying for highly polished and elegant look, he just has a home-style clothes on.
