I feel very embarrassed when he wears a white vest that is clearly an underwear vest walking the dog and going to the local Tesco express. I really don’t like it and ask him to change or put a top over it. None of the family will be seen out with him like this.

Oh I 'm sorry OP but this made me laugh.

Being older generation it transported me back to my childhood in the 1950s and 60s when men wearing vests and women going round to the local shop in curlers and headscarf, a la Hilda Ogden , was quite normal.

Not seen either of those behaviours for a while although I admit some years ago when I worked in a Sainsbury's in a student area being very surprised at the amount of young people coming into the shop on Sunday morning wearing their pyjamas that had clearly been slept in! Some members of staff actually discussed refusing to serve them as they found it disrespectful!

ttcat37 · 05/08/2025 14:59

Eww no. It’s a bit pyjamas at the school gate.

Catsandcannedbeans · 05/08/2025 15:02

It’s Tesco express not the ritz. People go in their jammies. I did a brief stint working in a supermarket as a teen and we’d have topless men come in, women in their jammies who had obviously just rolled out of bed, one man who would be barefoot (he was actually lovely). Most people won’t bat an eyelid, some will think he’s a tramp, but it’s not the end of the world.

Does he look like this?

This : Was going to ask if he has a good bod first, before I casted my vote 😂

AntisocialMedium · 05/08/2025 15:07

Has he got a beer gut and loads of tattoos?

Mmmm... i wonder what the Mumsnet reaction would be to men declaring women's clothes to be unacceptable in public places?

I don't think MN would be very encouraging of women going out in underwear if you are trying to compare.

Nanny0gg · 05/08/2025 15:08

I wonder how many of you would really be happy if your DP or DH actually did that?

Not many, I'd bet.

It sounds like this is more about your discomfort than his actual clothing. A white vest might not be your style, but unless it's genuinely indecent (which it doesn’t sound like it is), he’s just wearing what he feels comfortable in.

You're entitled to have preferences, but he's also entitled to dress himself — especially for something as casual as walking the dog or popping to Tesco.

Trying to control what he wears because you feel embarrassed crosses into territory that’s more about manipulation & image management than being in a healthy relationship.

Would you be okay if he started dictating what you could wear in public based on what he found “embarrassing”? Because that’s the flip side of this and its shocking that 80% of people think its reasonable behaviour because the roles are reversed.

If none of the family will be seen out with him over a vest, maybe the issue isn't his clothing — maybe it's the family's priorities.

Comfort, confidence, and self-expression should come before dress codes invented to impress strangers at Tesco.

A man's vest is underwear - there are just some things yer shouldn't do.

They'll be out in their long-johns next!

BadLad · 05/08/2025 15:15

What OP’s husband imagines he looks like

Is it acceptable for husband to wear white M&S vest in public???

But it’s not just a vest… it’s an M&S vest

Is he a member of Take That? If so it’s acceptable. If not, LTB.

BlueandPinkSwan · 05/08/2025 15:17

Some people look a right state in their too tight clothing with bulges eveywhere and arses hanging up. Beer guts hanging over shorts and jeans "'cos it gets the
wimmin going don't it?' No bil it really doesn't, bleugh.
So do you generally police what other people wear OP?

BadLad · 05/08/2025 15:19

Reality

Is it acceptable for husband to wear white M&S vest in public???
Cinnamonx · 05/08/2025 15:21

Your his wife not his mother.
You cant tell adults what to put on.

Nothingbutstress · 05/08/2025 15:24

I think it’s fine 😂I see people in pjs and dressing gowns in the supermarket and girls with their arses fully hanging out. A man in a white vest is nowhere near as bad

Foundress · 05/08/2025 15:27

Theo the scaffolder off Corrie wears a nice clean white one. I think teamed with workies trousers and a tool belt.

Everybodysinthehousetonight · 05/08/2025 15:29

Yes an M&S one is perfectly acceptable, not a Primark one though 😀

Wadadli · 05/08/2025 15:29

RedToothBrush · 05/08/2025 14:03

Is his name Onslow?

If it is, it's perfectly acceptable.

If it's not, then he shouldn't be offended when people make that mistake.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Needspaceforlego · 05/08/2025 15:33

Maybe the black would look more like a top rather than white underwear

Believe me there are lots of clothes that are unacceptable in public places. I give you the pyjamas in supermarkets or at the school gates - men and women would both agree that is slovenly.

Terrribletwos · 05/08/2025 15:35

I think people should wear what they want shopping as long as it doesn't frighten the horses. I, inadvertently went out in my pj's bottoms today to the local convenience store and didn't realise until I came back. Nobody noticed

Anyway, I think a vest is no big deal honestly..get over it.

That's your opinion but really so what...

LynetteScavo · 05/08/2025 15:38

It totally depends on whether he’s more Peter Andere or Onslow
