I feel very embarrassed when he wears a white vest that is clearly an underwear vest walking the dog and going to the local Tesco express. I really don’t like it and ask him to change or put a top over it. None of the family will be seen out with him like this.

I wear a tank top when I head out in my Adidas tracksuit to Bayley & Sage. Your hubby is fine.

Its fine, its a cami top for men

MolkosTeenageAngst · 05/08/2025 15:43

A white vest designed as outer wear is fine. A white vest designed as underwear is not fine. In most cases it is possible to tell the difference between a garment designed as outerwear and one designed as underwear, even if on paper the fit and style are similar. I would say exactly the same for women; a vest top or crop top are fine, an underwear vest or a sports bra are not. If the vest is designed as underwear then it really needs to be under something if out in public, otherwise it’s akin to wearing pyjamas - it may not be indecent but it’s still going to elicit judgement.

Does he look like this?

If only 😜😛

MyDeftHedgehog · 05/08/2025 15:45

If hes tanned with rippling muscles; yes
If he looks like Onslow; not a chance 🤣

MalcolmMoo · 05/08/2025 15:45

It’s not attractive but can’t see a problem with it. He’s covered and it’s not much different to a white t shirt jus with his shoulders out.

In America they call those vests wifebeaters.

Round here, there’s a certain community who tend to wear this kind of vest. It’s not a look I would love on my DH, but as pp have said, it would be fine on a woman and I would not appreciate being told not to wear something. Saying that, I’d hope not to be oblivious if I wore something inappropriate, which I feel this is. If family members won’t be seen with him when wearing it, then surely he would wear something else?

Ah, go on, tell us all what 'certain community' wears white sleeveless tops.

I don't think I could get stressed about what someone wears to walk the dog or nip to a corner shop. It's not like he's wearing it out to dinner.

DyslexicPoster · 05/08/2025 16:00

If woman can shuffle around in dressing gowns and furry slippers then why not.

But yes I judge. I judge the woman in their night wear shopping. I judge the young men pushing prams, sipping Stella at 11am in my home town when I go home. I have enought side eye for everyone 😄

GasPanic · 05/08/2025 16:02

Only if he has excessive underarm hair and an egg yolk stain down the front.

VIOLETPUGH · 05/08/2025 16:03

Good for him, better than his bare chest, man boobs and shit tattoos

Poonu · 05/08/2025 16:03

Is he stac

Poonu · 05/08/2025 16:04

Ked?

Radiowaawaa · 05/08/2025 16:04

I mean it’s M and S so maybe ok.

I love that your post came in two parts

DiscoBob · 05/08/2025 16:05

It could look quite acceptable, even sexy on some blokes. As long as it was very bright white and clean. And not sweaty looking.

grumpygrape · 05/08/2025 16:07

I bet the dog still loves him 😂

gingercat02 · 05/08/2025 16:10

I think I would suggest an actual vest top rather than a white cotton underwear vest, but as long as it's not a greying string vest it's OK

Nowstrong · 05/08/2025 16:16

No

Growlybear83 · 05/08/2025 16:16

I really don’t see a problem with this - perhaps your husband is embarrassed to be seen in public with you at times. My husband and I have very very different tastes in clothes and I think he wears some truly horrendous clothes - he has a large collection of tweed jackets and flat caps - but I would never complain about his appearance to anyone else.

Dinosaursare · 05/08/2025 16:18

My husband will go out in a vest- i dont like it but can't say it bothers me. I usually just joke with him and we say he looks like a down and out

ginasevern · 05/08/2025 16:22

Onslow definitely springs to mind.

I don't think MN would be very encouraging of women going out in underwear if you are trying to compare.

But what about a man telling his wife what is and isn't acceptable for her to wear in public?

If it's her underwear or jimjams then he should!
