Is it acceptable for husband to wear white M&S vest in public???

I feel very embarrassed when he wears a white vest that is clearly an underwear vest walking the dog and going to the local Tesco express. I really don’t like it and ask him to change or put a top over it. None of the family will be seen out with him like this.

Am I still allowed to wear my white vests with my jeans? Or is it just men that shouldn’t wear them?

Vest tops are fine. Vests that are underwear, not so much.

IMO it's the definition of chavvy OP.

I’ve got white vests tops, designed for every day wear that are exactly the same as white vests they sell as underwear! Op needs to describe the vest tops or provide a picture!

Just men.

It’s not attractive but can’t see a problem with it. He’s covered and it’s not much different to a white t shirt jus with his shoulders out.

No, not much different. But different.

The difference is, it's a vest not a T-shirt. So is unsuitable as outerwear.

A pair of boxer shorts aren't much different to a pair of sports shorts, but men shouldn't be wearing boxers to walk the dog in either.

LBFseBrom · 05/08/2025 18:37

If he is lean, toned and tanned it is acceptable. If he isn't, it's not.

If it has short sleeves then it's not a vest. Isn't a vest always sleeveless? I'm old enough to remember when a man's sleeveless undergarment was called "a singlet".

As in, "I'm knitting a singlet for Cecil" song:

At 14.32 someone posted a link to M&S men's vests, they are available in black and white, sleeveless vests, like your maths teacher wore under his shirt!

Singlet might be a local word.
Simmet is the old word i know, or at least I think simmet is a vest

I think PP talking about women’s clothing are missing the point.
he is wearing an undershirt vest, designed to be worn under clothes. They are cut differently and look like underwear. My husband has both vest tops, which he wears in the summer; and vests which he wears under a shirt or top in the winter. If he tried to go out wearing his underwear vest I would laugh in his face!

And if he doesn’t?

That would be like a husband telling a wife she’s not the right size/shape for a certain item of clothing.

That can’t be right, can it?

Aww, lighten up!

Or not, I guess. Up to you.

I have, but I kind of lost it at the sight of Marlon in his wife beater.

Tbh, I used to wear tiny skirts and shorts when I had the legs for it, but if any of my friends or family "allowed" me to do so now I would seriously question their loyalty.

edited to remove a laughing emoji - it looked a bit OTT

MemorableLlama · 05/08/2025 22:17

Mine does it as well. I feel your pain.
I even got him some different coloured ones so they at least didn’t look like underwear. Does he wear them? No!

You’ve lost me at Marlon too.

Nobody in their right mind would really view that as underwear!

FloydWasACat · 05/08/2025 23:13

I am just picturing Freddy Mercury!!

PickAChew · 05/08/2025 23:15

It might be ugly but it's perfectly acceptable.

I assure you, it looks like an undershirt and not a top.

Yes I get that. Listen again. I don't put a man's vest in the same underwear category as a bra.

No, me neither, and I didn’t say it was lingerie, I said it was underwear. Which it is?!

For the purposes of a dictionary definition, yes, it is. For the purposes of this discussion no, it isn't

Well that’s where we disagree. I think an undershirt looks like an undershirt and therefore like someone is wearing underwear, in the same way a man wearing boxer shorts is wearing underwear as they are clearly different to shorts as outerwear. Whatever definition of underwear you’ve decided applies to this conversation doesn’t change the fact that a vest looks like a vest rather than a top.

I, inadvertently went out in my pj's bottoms today to the local convenience store

How can anyone go out shopping in their PJs 'inadvertently'?

Edited

Well pj bottoms really...forgot I still had them on. Was pottering about and nipped out to shop beside me for some milk.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 06/08/2025 22:28

I expect sooner or later someone will go out nude in public and say it's their yuman rites to do so.

Serpentstooth · 08/08/2025 12:43

What's happened to the nude cycling man? Is he still freewheeling, naked, around our green and pleasant land or did he buy some clothes after his last spell in prison?l

Is his name Onslow?

If it is, it's perfectly acceptable.

If it's not, then he shouldn't be offended when people make that mistake.

Is his name Onslow?
Ha, beat me to it 😁
