Is it acceptable for husband to wear white M&S vest in public???

I feel very embarrassed when he wears a white vest that is clearly an underwear vest walking the dog and going to the local Tesco express. I really don’t like it and ask him to change or put a top over it. None of the family will be seen out with him like this.

Does he look like this?

And if he doesn’t?

That would be like a husband telling a wife she’s not the right size/shape for a certain item of clothing.

That can’t be right, can it?

AirborneElephant · 05/08/2025 14:26

Well, I certainly wouldn’t find it very attractive, and wouldn’t want to go out of the house if DH did that. If he likes sleeveless tops can he not find some vests or sleeveless t-shirts that don’t look like underwear?

Some people claim there were no double standings on Mumsnet.
Clearly there are.

Yep.

At least he's not wearing skin tight hot pants like my 70 year old male neighbour used to.

Of course it's not right.
It's Stanley Kowalski.

Hmmm. There are plenty of threads on here where women are told “you can’t wear that”. Not from the perspective of it’s offensive or illegal, just not suitable socially. I think M&S underwear vests definitely fall into that category.

Hilarious.

TaborlinTheGreat · 05/08/2025 14:30

Nothing wrong with it in terms of public decency, but I wouldn't be a fan tbh.

Serpentstooth · 05/08/2025 14:31

Wife beater vest accessorised with a can of Stella? Whyever not if that's an image you're both happy with? A massive dog on a chain would go nicely here.

Funnywonder · 05/08/2025 14:32

If it was a Primark vest I’d say definitely not. But M&S? Crack on🤣

mamagogo1 · 05/08/2025 14:33

Best tops on men are a bit ick anyway, it’s certainly a certain look which doesn’t do it for me! So imho no never

Moveoverdarlin · 05/08/2025 14:34

I wouldn’t be seen dead with him.

Mmmm... i wonder what the Mumsnet reaction would be to men declaring women's clothes to be unacceptable in public places?

I wonder too but obviously, that's never happened. Asking for it, etc.

Does he look like this?

that was my thought

I mean yes it's fine to go out in a white vest

Two small things, what body shape is being presented? (and yes I feel the same about female clothing)

more importantly, is it a clean vest? white looks lovely, dirty white dreadful

MarxistMags · 05/08/2025 14:35

@Bejam2014 Is he channeling his inner Bruce Willis ?

EverythingIsComputer · 05/08/2025 14:36

Oh no no no. Never.

BubblyBath178 · 05/08/2025 14:41

😂 In felt the same when my husband insisted on wearing an awful grey vest (that sounds just like that) in Florida last year.

When he saw the pictures, even he realised how dreadful he looked and it was relegated to the bin 🙄 🙌

JoshLymanSwagger · 05/08/2025 14:41

As long as it's clean and free from egg stains, why do you care?
He can wear what he wants.

Does he tell you what to wear?

Needspaceforlego · 05/08/2025 14:43

The cut of underwear vests are different to sports vests.

How old is your DH?

Cherrysoup · 05/08/2025 14:43

Round here, there’s a certain community who tend to wear this kind of vest. It’s not a look I would love on my DH, but as pp have said, it would be fine on a woman and I would not appreciate being told not to wear something. Saying that, I’d hope not to be oblivious if I wore something inappropriate, which I feel this is. If family members won’t be seen with him when wearing it, then surely he would wear something else?

MoriftedinaFrenchEscapeRoom · 05/08/2025 14:44

What does he pair with his M&S vest?
