To be so fed up amd disheartened with all the xenophobia

1000 replies

Nohqters · 04/08/2025 21:56

Honestly, I’m just feeling worn out and heartbroken lately. It seems like racism and xenophobia are becoming more and more mainstream again, wrapped up in the same tired scare stories, whether it’s splashed across a tabloid or coming straight out of Farage’s mouth. Then you see stupid threads on here about civil war trying to stir up more hate.

Even my own brother has started sounding like Tommy Robinson. Ten years ago, that would’ve been unthinkable. It’s like people have completely forgotten the lies we were sold during Brexit—by Farage, Tice and their crowd—and yet they’re still lapping up everything they say. No critical thought, just blind anger pointed in the wrong direction.
I’m so fed up with the endless nonsense about small boats, “white minorities,” and all the rest of it. It’s all designed to divide us, stoke hate, and distract from the real culprits—rubbish politicians, broken policies, and the ultra-wealthy hoarding resources while the rest of us struggle.

But instead of looking upwards, it’s always “blame Johnny Foreigner.” It’s exhausting, and frankly terrifying how quickly people fall for it.

Is anyone else feeling this? How are you managing conversations when even close family seem to be buying into this stuff? I’m trying to stay compassionate, but it’s getting harder to bite my tongue.

Interestingly, another MIDEM report found that,

The results show that older people, people with a high degree of educational attainment and income, and residents of large cities have the strongest negative feelings toward people who think differently. Political orientation also plays a role: On average, those who identify themselves as left-leaning are more polarized than those who identify themselves as right-leaning. Voters of left-wing and far-left parties, and of green or environmental parties, are significantly more polarized than others across Europe. Individuals who show the least amount of aversion towards people with opinions different to their own are non-voters as well as the supporters of Christian democratic or conservative parties.

This suggests that people with life experience, experience of living in diverse areas and those who have learnt skills of critical thinking through advanced education feel more negatively towards people whose beliefs and ethos are more reactive, reactionary and instinctive. Which backs up what you suggest in your original post; that those holding more progressive views have formed those views through a process of education and lived experience and tend not to highly value the ideas of those who haven't been through that process.

Denigrating learning difficulties? You're still at it. You're posting on a forum, that's supportive of LDs and ND. Keep going.

NellitheNelephant · 05/08/2025 00:02

Diversity should be seen as an exciting and useful thing for a society as you gain from all the different viewpoints and talents UK could lead the game on this one in the way that I used to believe that America did (I was deluded). Instead it is disappearing into negativity, violence and stupidity. We look like idiots.

You articulate it so well. Thank God there are still sensible like-minded people out there who don't fall for all the right wing nonsense.

It's a wise idea to switch off from socials. I think I'll have to do that as the level of ignorance on display is too much

This sort of comment does not help people see your point of view OP, assuming all left wing people are decent and right and all right wing people are vile just fuels division, pushing away people rather than engaging them in meaningful dialogue which can lead to better outcomes all round.

You failed to answer the question. Therefore it is you who is shitty. You are only interested in insulting me not actual debate. I pity you and your pathetic label maker joke which will no doubt have you chuckling and drooling through the night.

I agree with you. People need to brush up on their knowledge of Germany in the 1930s. Scary times.

Maybe Gary Lineker can help you?

It's ridiculous so much media cover is given to illegal immigrants when the number of legal migration is significantly higher. For example about 150,000 people have come to to UK from Hong Kong alone since 2021.

How many immigrants from Hong Kong have raped or murdered women since arriving?

Exactly this! The complete inability for some people to apply any nuance to this debate is truly mind-blowing!

People like the OP live nowhere near the communities dealing with these issues at ground level and, if anything, THEY are the ones being sucked in by what they're being shown on TV. To them, everyone's a racist because 'the news said so' 🙄

How about this for an idea? Maybe those people could actually visit areas like Epping, Tower Hamlets etc for a week to get first-hand experience of why there is such depth of feeling among the locals around this issue. Rather than just sitting comfy in their ivory tower, calling everyone below them "racist'!

I'm afraid it is true. Not necessarily that they are vile people, but that the ideology is essentially vile and dehumanising.

The Mail is really stirring things, article after article about immigration, they would love it if we had another summer of riots. County council in my area went Reform at the local elections, the irony being that the county is predominantly white. I take the piss out of a friend because her local councillor is Reform but it's not funny really. Again, there are hardly any black of brown people out where she lives so why does Reform currently have so much support? I get it that people are fed up with the state of the country but why on earth do people think that Farage has the answers

I personally find the ideology of stoning women to death vile and dehumanising. An understatement, I know.

Perhaps educate yourself, use critical thinking and stop swallowing every bit of dog-whistle politics you hear. There are plenty of criminals who are native born too.

And why has net migration gone up so much?? Because Brexit took away freedom of movement from British citizens so a lot less of us cant move abroad now and that makes numbers higher

Mental that you’ve highjacked the words “critical thinking” when you’re exactly the kind of person to be vaccinated up to the eyeballs and clapped for carers in 2020 😩

When I go to many of these areas I see people getting on with their lives (or trying to). I don't see what you are implying is on display. The news however is showing some terrible behaviour from people who are illegally hounding people who I assume cannot leave their accommodation while they are barricaded in. It is shameful.

Also, please tell us what you feel is going on. And don't forget the nuance that you feel you can bring to the narrative

We regularly see people hounding a hotel full of women and children. It's not long before someone tries to set fire to them

Regardless of what you feel about immigration, this is not the way
