AIBU to not understand why people will vote Reform when Brexit is the reason for the migrant boats.

We did not have a boat problem before Brexit due to the rules/agreements, so why do people want to vote for the man who had a big part in causing this and his company party?

It did not make us less racist. Post-Brexit there was a 15-25% percent rise in racially motivated crimes. The higher the Leave vote in an area, the higher the rise, with Remain areas having lower rises.

Immigration massively rose however

Yeah, Remain areas are typically more pmc dominated, and they tend to be lower crime anyway.

Nor is it odd that an area with more immigration would have more social stress around immigration.

I also think it's worth considering how police may have changed how they record these kinds of crimes, either as a matter of policy or just in practice.

"performing arts and sports being restricted to those who were born here"

Eh?

Global Talent visas are available to migrants who can demonstrate particular talent in things like performing arts, and International Sportsperson visas, does what it says on the tin. I'm not sure that even the most hardened Reform voter would say orchestral musicians are a threat to the welfare of the country.

I'm all for vastly improved musical education in schools so that orchestras no longer need to recruit from abroad, but again, it would require both time and money. And our pal Disaffected Dave is not going to be stepping in with a clarinet solo any time soon.

Reform don’t have an answer either…not when you really push them. They have to follow international law too. Despite their rhetoric.

This is it. We need to know what Reform could do, that Labour arent doing.

ActiveLog · 04/08/2025 15:59

I echo what others have said. It’s fuck all to do with Brexit and everything to do with the spineless government’s - Not just the current own but the tories as well!!

Just watching on the news the peaceful pink protest. Mostly women and children just quietly sitting down with no violence, no screaming and shouting, no aggression, peacefully putting their point across, which is their right in a democracy.

Reform will win the next election because they are the only party that are listening to the public

I see, thank you for answering. If the UK is suffering from a cultural malaise, some would argue this would be better addressed internally rather than draining talent from developing countries.

I recently saw a video of Margaret Thatcher speaking and it was genuinely energising. I didn’t agree with her politics but to hear a politician communicating ideas and vision with such passion and conviction was a stark contrast to what gets served up these days.

I agree - you don't have to agree with everything/anything Margaret Thatcher said, to agree that she was a great leader both of her party, and of the nation. She didn't stand any nonsense from anyone and you always knew where you were with her, whether or not you liked it.

caringcarer · 04/08/2025 16:49

Brexit is not reason for migrants boats. They come because the pull factors are too strong. They get given generous benefits as soon as processed. They get given accommodation. If the UK stopped handing out benefits to immigrants who arrive illegally there would be far fewer of them.

User32459 · 04/08/2025 16:50

Because Labour are a disgrace and the Tories were a shitshow for 14 years.

Labour want open borders, Reform will at least try and stop it.

The difference between the same five or so scripted lines for every Labour MP and the PM and Thatcher speaking is stark. At least she actually responded.

The reason for small boats is that our ruling classes have decided that they will impose mass immigration on the people of this country, not matter what.

This is very plainly untrue. Small boats represent a tiny fraction of migration to this country. The overwhelming majority of immigration to this country is legal.

It would be entirely possible to shut down all legal routes of migration as long as you're fine with universities going bust, farms going bust, care homes going bust, the NHS failing and having to be privatised, foreign companies being prohibited from setting up branches in the UK, performing arts and sports being restricted to those who were born here, and the pensionable age being raised to 80. The problem is that most voters are not, in fact, fine with that.

We need a 5 year freeze on all migration (with the exception of maybe 1 or 2 visa routes) to deal with the housing and population crisis we already have and get some of the millions of young people into work. From there we can start to assess how much skilled migration we need going forward but with a net zero target.

People just about put up with mass immigration when they could buy the lie that it was an economic benefit. Now the economy is in ruins and they can't buy a house, they can't get a doctor, they can't get a dentist, public services don't work, the job market is terrible, the country is a lawless cesspit. People just aren't buying it anymore.

Withdraw from the ECHR and revoke the right to asylum - it was designed to deal with far smaller population flows and has sadly become entirely unsustainable.

Any irregular migrants who arrive are detained until they can be deported to their home country or a third country where the former is not possible.

The government need to declare an emergency and just pause the right to asylum for x number of years while we can deal with the backlogs we already have and a housing crisis. Leave the ECHR, repeal the HRA, have a new UK bill of rights.

Of course it could all be stopped tomorrow but Labour have no will to do it.

DeLaRuiz · 04/08/2025 17:00

Starmer seems like an absolute lump of meat, compared to Mrs Thatcher. But Neil Kinnock could talk too, I’m not sure exactly when politicians stopped being able to speak. It’s so depressing.

AzurePanda · 04/08/2025 17:01

OP are you familiar with the number of illegal immigrants that EU member countries have arriving annually?

Blair was a great speaker, responsible for a lot of this mess though.

Poland, Hungary? Denmark now.

Depends which ones have the will to stop it.

Lol!!!! Yes of course migrant boats only started 5 years ago 😂

People rarely crossed the channel, it was perceived as dangerous.

The turning point was when the NGOs started advertising them on tiktok a few years ago. And the RNLI being there to rescue them if they get into trouble on route and then Border Force there to give them a taxi service.

It just wasn't really a thing, although some would chance it. The main route was the back of a lorry.

AnneElliott · 04/08/2025 17:35

Brexit was not the reason for the boats. The reason for the boats is that we effectively shut off the lorry option for clandestine entry into the UK. And the boats are the result.

Look up the actual amounts of people we managed to return under the Dublin Agreement - it was tiny. Brexit has made no difference other than it annoyed the French.

What “generous benefits” do they get as soon as they are processed.
