And it’s only August 😩 I’m quite sick of this weather to be honest

This. It was horrible when it was 30 degrees. It was impossible to do anything without sweating. I found it impossible to sleep so i was exhausted during the day. To top it off my neighbours were having parties in the garden until the small hours. Now that it is cooler i have more energy.

Yep!
I love walking in the frosty air. I just cant do that in the heat 😫

Mavvera · 03/08/2025 19:01

It will feel like Autumn tomorrow when the storm comes in.

intrepidpanda · 03/08/2025 19:26

Could be a bit cooder here in the east. It's very muggy.
Summer isn't really till September anyway.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 03/08/2025 19:43

We're currently on holiday in the Scottish borders. Yesterday was blue sky and warm. This morning it was proper dreich with mist hiding the hilltops. The views are spectacular and I can see swathes of green, gold and pink across the valley. There is most definitely a subtle hint of autumn in the air up here.

Chipsahoy · 03/08/2025 19:52

It’s been another beautiful day in NE Scotland today. We had rain for an hour first thing and glorious sunshine since. 21c. That’s definitely shorts or dresses weather here.

cardibach · 03/08/2025 19:54

15minutesaday · 03/08/2025 16:37

@cardibach Actually you said hot tarmac.

Does it really matter? Confused

Edited

Oh ok. I said tarmac because actually, that’s where most of us smell it. The fact is it’s rain in hot weather that causes it, not rain in cool weather as you suggested.

So your neighbours were able to be out without suffering? They shouldn’t disturb you though.
Sweating isn’t the end of the world.

WestwardHo1 · 03/08/2025 19:57

Jesus the moaning.

There's always a touch of autumn in August. Have you seen the forecast? After Monday's storm it looks fine

Greenwriter76 · 03/08/2025 19:57

DartmoorWanderer · 03/08/2025 07:17

Yes, same here. There’s been a chill in the air in the morning for a couple of weeks now. It’s such a shame, because August is meant to be the hottest month!

Yes - I definitely felt a more autumnal change in the air / atmosphere around then. As you say, damp mornings.

ClassicStripe · 03/08/2025 20:08

MN is so weird about hot weather. As soon as it’s remotely warm people are moaning that they are sweating while doing normal things like walking. So boring when people make their whole personality loving autumn and being cosy.

Don't they just.

Judellie · 03/08/2025 20:32

Been gorgeous here in the north east this weekend. It was raining this morning but we decided to go up tothe coast and meet up with some of the rest of the family anyway, thinking at least I'd get parked no problem. True at that point, then it turned into a lovely warm sunny day and lots of people came out to enjoy the sun.
I have also classified 'summer' as May, June and July as those are the months with long light nights and midsummer is in June. The vernal equinox is in September therefore the months either side of that are autumn, August, September and October.
Similarly, winter is November, December and the awful January as thise months are the darkest and the shortest day is in December.
So that leaves February, March and April to be spring - March containing the spring equinox and February and April are the months either side of that.
Makes far more sense than saying summer starts 21 June - as if!

Zanatdy · 03/08/2025 20:33

We have had lots of great weather recently. I’m glad of the break. Though it’s been fairly warm here anyway

It's not just sweating though?

Its endless days where it's still light at 10pm, it's having next to no sleep even having a fan pointed at you all night, it's the complete lack of routine because you have to wake up at 5am because from 7am onwards it's too hot to walk the dog, it's the complete lack of breeze or any air, it's being unable to cool down no matter what you try, it's not being "sweaty" it's being wet and sticky within 5 seconds of walking out the door, showering multiple times a day just to feel somewhat clean, feeling completely drained and devoid of any energy after being awake for two hours or having to sit with the car door open for ages before you go anywhere because its like sitting in an oven. I can't think of a single positive of Summer.

This summer has been horrific especially if you have SAD, I've been horrifically depressed for weeks and it's finally starting to fade.

I typically walk 5 miles a day, I never break a sweat, I don't feel like people who exercise regularly would be sweating whilst out on a walk.

and before you ask, I was clinically obese last year. Summer was horrific. I've now lost half of my body weight and am in the middle of a healthy weight. This year was even worse. Yes some people struggle more with the cold than others but when you're cold there is at least things you can do to mitigate it, layer up, hot drinks, hearty food, you can take hand warmers on walks with you, have a hot bath and worst case stick the heating on.
When you're too hot you...sit in front of a fan that's blowing warm air at you? Ice in water melts almost instantly and doesn't do anything, cotton/linen clothing doesn't help. You can't exactly peel off your skin can you ?

BestZebbie · 03/08/2025 22:00

This year the cliche about summer ending in the day that the schools break up for the summer holidays was literally true. We had a glorious (unreasonably hot) June and July which ended ten days ago ready for a humid, damp “British summer” where all the swings are wet as it rained sometime in the last hour. :-/

Right you are then. Whatever you say.

And thanks for correcting my stupid, dumb, and completely incorrect description of my description of autumnal feeling.

Jeez.

Don't forget the hot choc, fairy lights and blankies on the sofa by crackling log burners.

A lot of this is over dramatised though.

I was 25 stone last year. 15 this year. I have never, ever, been unable to sleep all night because it’s so hot. It’s just the pure determination to act like it’s awful, but then when you try and explain you get SAD during winter, you’re told to just get cosy!!!

Yep, same here. Down in Devon and it’s horrible rain and cloud.

It’s just started to rain here and I was about to go out 🌧️🌧️
Hopefully after today it should start to get a bit nicer again, though it is the North Devon Show on Wednesday, so I’m not holding my breath 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️

I sweat a lot due to menopause (even treated). I’ve just walked a massive chunk of the Camino, so it’s not to do with fitness.
I experience none of the rest of the things you complain about there in a British summer, not even in a heatwave. Fans make air cold, but I’ve used mine precisely twice this year. Ice melting makes your drink colder, that’s just physics, but how about keep the liquid in the fridge as well if you are so wedded to cold drinks? I also don’t understand why being light until 10 is a negative. I walk rescue dogs. They’ve been stopping walking at 10 for heat and only stopped it completely once so you don’t need to go before 7.
In the cold, though, I am miserable. No, I can’t put more clothes on. It doesn’t help - I’m just uncomfortable as well as cold. My face is still cold. My hands are still cold (even in gloves and I refuse to wear them indoors). I do put the heating on but it’s expensive to make me feel just barely ok. Hot drinks and ‘hearty food’ dont make me warmer. It’s dark and cold and wet and miserable and it pitches me to the edge of depression every year. I can barely make myself leave the house even for stuff I love doing.
And off mumsnet I meet many, many people who share at least part of my feelings about winter and very, very few who feel as you do about summer. MN is weird about it.

RampantIvy · 04/08/2025 13:09

Neither do I. The nights are definitely cutting in now. Six weeks ago the sun was still shining at 9.30. Last night it was dark at the same time.

I’ve been sweating a load this year when out for walks. Also menopausal. I think it’s the clamminess and lack of a breeze that’s the worst as the sweat has nowhere to evaporate to. I took to dipping a scarf in cold water and wearing it wet!

I find it annoying. I have to shut the lounge curtains by about 8 even in the height of summer because I've had enough of the bright sunlight which just makes me feel hotter. It feels oppressive.

Entirely personal though. I appreciate why plenty of others (the majority) like extra daylight. It's just not for me. Not that I'm a cosy lamp person either. I detest lamps and own none. I like the big light on. It's just that after about 8 if it's still light outside I don't feel like it's properly evening and it's harder to relax.

I also hate driving at any time when the sun might be right in my eyes. Driving in the dark is far preferable.

You must have better eyesight than me as I prefer not to drive in the dark. Do you not own any sunglasses?

Not that I ever remembered to have with me! There's probably 5 pairs knocking the house somewhere. I only allow myself to buy cheap ones as I can't be trusted to not lose them.

At least when it's properly dark you know what to expect. Never know with a sunny day which bend you are going to go round and be suddenly dazzled
